My hunting buddy told me yesterday that a big 8X7 elk was shot very near Kelowna a few days ago. Apparently it's already at Harley White's...

I heard that the fellow went near the bush, cow called with a hoochie mama, the bull came out of the bush and spotted the hunter, back in the bush it went. Fellow hoocjied it again, bull came out and got shot...

Anyone else heard of this? I could not find anything on it on HBC so it might not be true.:-D

Interesting about the HM. I was told by some elk hunting buddies in the Koots that there the HM has almost become an elk deterrent due to the fact it consistently reproduces the same sound - unlike real elk and reed calls, and the elk get wise to it quickly.

Anyone else heard this?

Yes, Hoochies have been known to scare elk here! I use diaphrams because I can produce any sound that I like.

Ran into Officer Sietz last week and he was investigating a young bull elk shot and left up there just outside the park. Haven't heard much about it since though.

How the heck do you manage that? Them diaphragms are BIG, but the worse part is the taste of that jelly they put on them, yuck!!!

And I'm gonna have to go have a little talk with my "source"... Sorry boyz...

Never had a problem using them, and the taste doesn't bother me... comes off after the first use. Used them since I was 11 or so with no issues.

I've just started practicing/using the Primos Terminator lately (the whole bugle for bulls and you just pull out the mouthpiece for cow calls) and it has a silicone rubber reed. You just pop it on - no stretching, no jelly, no latex to rot. I'm far from an expert and I have yet to use the new call, but it seems sounds good to me!?

Saw the 8x7 that got taken at Nevertouch Lake. It wasn't a "big" bull. Far from it actually.

The Hoochie Mama works just fine. I've used that as well as another very, very old cow call that makes only one sound and they both work. The problem is likely the guys using them.

I heard about a vegetarian that turned meat eater after getting a 6x6 bull.
He walked into the hunting country walking backwards as he was leading a pack donkey with one hand while whistling under his breath and attracting the bull out of the brush.

Great local bull!
We don't have the luxury of the long beamed West and East Kootnenay elk, but what our local elk have is some great mass and character. Your wonderful bull is a great representation of that.
Good for you!
