Went out into the 4-35 today for a hunt with a fellow in town here. First time hunting with him as well. Anyway, we headed up into some cuts to check out the scenery and started the day off fairly well, saw a cow elk within the first few minutes of getting out there, but after a couple chuckles on the bugle and some cow-squeaks, it was obvious she was on her own.

A little further in, and up into this older cut, I spotted a beauty of a black bear, about 200 yards into the cut. Tempted, as I would've happily cut my tag on him, but figured I'd leave him and could always come back down into that cut-block again and see if I couldn't scope him out.

After seeing several white tail does, a couple mulie does, and a big cow moose with a calf, the two of us were starting to get a little beat and figured we'd start heading back..

That's when we spotted this guy attempting to sneak up into the trees just off the logging road:

Beauty, ain't he? ;) Taken with my 30.06, 5x4 with a 16" inside spread. Gonna make a nice european mount on my wall! So stoked, and a great start to my season!

Still grinnin', even after stealing a nap. LOL! Unfortunately didn't manage to get my membership renewed for the R&G Club in town, so I won't be able to enter him, but he's a trophy in my eyes, and is gonna definitely be getting mounted on a nice plaque on my wall, for sure!

And MAN, was this boy FAT. He had a 2" layer of fat down the length of his back, alone. Wonder if it's a sign of a long, cold winter? That, or just a fat, healthy buck.

Heck yeah! The guy's good luck, it seems. Gave me a little grief for knocking the boiler-room outta my deer though, he's more a head-shot guy, but I didn't wanna wreck a nice set of antlers like that! :P I've been taught to take the ticker out, so that's exactly what I did.

Great buck, congrats. You just keep taking out the ticker you were taught right, head shots are stooopid! ;-) Flame suit on!

I wanted him on my wall, as well. Unfortunately the cape got ruined by that old wives tale to 'cut the throat', and I did get a bit upset when the guy went ahead and did it.

It's my belief that cutting the throat is useless when their heart's blown out, everything's in the body cavity already.

I could always just buy another cape for it, some taxidermists have extras, and I'm sure if one of my buds bag a whitie this year they could give me theirs.. the sad part is that I lose all his unique features that way, like his tattered up ear. This boy was a scrapper by the looks of him, that's for sure.

I cut the throat on a good mulie I shot and yes the taxidermist will give you heck but the taxi that did mine did such a good job fixing it you cant tell. I say keep the cape it came with.

I would, but the damage on this one was pretty irreparable. Looks like a set of claws'd gone after the throat! And after buddy tore it up cutting up into the brisket, all hope was lost as it is.

I asked another couple friends of mine, if they bag a buck about the same body-size, if I could have their cape. :)
