View Full Version : 4 year wait for a 4 hour hunt

Well, after 4 years of nil, I drew a goat tag this year. So this friday, when my wife got home from work, we headed out. Arrived at the trail head at 4pm and by 6pm we were into our camping spot. Ran across a Grizzly-killed goat on the way up. A quick glass of the slope above camp showed us a Nanny with a kid and then seperate on the same slope what looked like a Billy. After we put the tarp up, I left the wife to set up the rest of camp while Bushmill the dog and I headed out to have a better look at the slope and the suspected Billy.
After 15 min of watching, I was pretty sure it was a Billy and was planning how to approach him in the morning. Just as I was getting ready to head back to camp, I notice a goat walking across the scree above me. I watch for about 5 min and was convinced he was not only a Billy, but bigger than the one I had been eying. I quickly decided that if i could get into position in time, I would attempt the shot.
Ten minutes of boulder hopping had me into a shooting position. I then realize my range finder is in camp but a quick estimation of the range has me thinking 400 yards (ranged at 390 after). I quickly strip off my vest to use as a rest and lay down across the boulder and wait for him to stop walking. Just like magic he stops for a bite of grass and I touch off the shot. Down he goes falling about 20 yards and lying still. I watch for 5 mins to make sure he will not get up and before heading back to camp for my pack. I meet my wife coming up to find out what the shot was for. We start to climb up and arrive at the downed goat at 8pm: 4 hours after we parked the truck. A quick caping and deboning has us back in camp at 10pm. Left the goat on the snow to cool. Up the next morning and at the truck by 9:30. C.I. aged the goat at 8.5 years and measured the horns at 9 and 3/4 inches.

Great goat....nice shooting too!

Always wanted a pack dog....how much weight do you have them pack?

They can handle 20lb for short periods on flat land. In the mountains I usualy load them with 10 to 15lb of meat for the way out. The male only weighs 35lb so 20lb is alot of weight for him.

Great goat, Everett! What a tremendous season you and your wife have had. Congratulations and thanks for posting. Your stories and pics are a big inspiration for a lot of us here on HBC. I'm looking forward to my own goat hunt in October. Hopefully I'll have a need to PM you about the sausage making process. Looking forward to hearing how your deer season goes!

Brambles how could you let a heeler get fat thats heeler abuse:wink: if you had her/him with you you might not have got chewed up the best defense from bears I have ever seen is a bonded heeler. My male has twice protected my wife from black bears. Fead them bear meat when they are young and bears are just something to be chased and eaten.

That's a very nice goat and a really good looking cape for September. I used to love hunting goats and I might have been slightly disappointed that the adventure didn't last a little longer, but I certainly would have been very satisfied with that nice billy. Good job,,,,, you're a lucky man Everett to have a gal that enjoys trekking those high country trails with you.

Boy that was a very quick turn around time, who did the job for you?

Charlie Farn in Creston did it for me. Last deer he did for me was similar timeframe. Half the price of cranbrook and four times as fast.

Wow you must know this taxidermy that was quick the goat mount looks great on your wall again congrats to you..

Nope only know him as a Taxadermist met him 4 times. Just a real good guy who gets his work done in a reasonable mount of time for a price a working stiff can afford.
