I decided to put up this post to try to help people understand the deer regs. in the province. After talking to hunters this opening weekend and reading some posts today its clear people are not reading the regulations. I was going to say "not understanding the regs" but it is in plain black and white English and I don't believe you could read the synopsis and not get it. If you just got your licence you should have been taught this in your C.O.R.E. class. If you are not able to read get someone to read it to you or get it translated if your English is not good. I will use region three as an example.

-The PROVINCIAL bag limit is 3 deer in total . That means you can kill 3 deer total for the year in BC. You need the species tag for each individual animal killed. One mule deer tag is not good for two dead mulies.

-The REGIONAL bag limit is the first thing listed on the first page of each regions regulations. Its the first thing you read at the top of the page after the regional map. You can't miss it. There are 8 regions. Each region is divided into different management unit which are shown on the region map.

So, the above regional 3 regs for deer are very clear. You can harvest a combination of the following to a total of 3 deer.
1 mule buck
1 wt buck
1 wt doe(when in season)
1 mule doe(ONLY with an LEH tag)

Now here is how you plan your hunt and what size, sex and species can I harvest in the area. Ask and answer the following questions in this order and you can't screw up.

#1-What do I want to hunt? eg. mule deer buck
#2-What region will I hunt? eg. Region 3 near Kamloops(Thompson)
#3-What management unit will I hunt?. eg. 3-20 Near Monte lake.
#4-When will I hunt? eg Sept. 20th-Sept. 23rd
#5-Is there an open season and is there an antler size restriction during these dates I want to hunt?
eg. 4 point bucks only.

You can find the answers to the above questions below in the region 3 open season chart matched with the question #.

You can see that the dates you want to hunt you can only shoot a 4 point or bigger mulie buck. You should carry a WT tag as well in case you see a buck you can take it.

The same chart shows that if you hunt in this area from Oct.1 to Oct. 31 you can shot ANY size mule buck. From Nov 1 to Dec.10 it changes back to 4 point bucks only.
A four point buck must have at least 4 points on at least ONE antler. It could be more points but must be 4 minimum. When it says "Bucks" it means any buck.

The above chart also shows the open season for WT does(antlerless) as well as any buck season. You can see WT bucks are listed as "bucks" which means you can kill any WT buck no matter what size as long as you can see antlers, for the whole season.

The following chart shows the bag limit for region 2(lower mainland) and as you can see it is 2 deer. They don't list WT because there are no WT in region 2. So you can shoot 2 mule(BT) bucks of any size in region 2. If you harvest two deer in region 2 you must go to another region to harvest another buck or doe which would be your 3 deer limit and you are done deer hunting till next season. If you see a WT buck in region 2 you CAN NOT KILL IT. Why? Because it is not listed as open in the regs.

That about sums it up. This should help the new guys as well as a refresher for older hunters. I have reread this a few times before I posted it and I think it's all correct but I may have missed something. If you disagree with any thing I have said please reply but ONLY after you have read and understood what you think you know. Happy hunting.
