View Full Version : 2011 Mnt Goat LEH Hunt in Region 4

Its about one year ago this month that my quest for a Mnt Goat grew, a friend/member took a nice LEH Goat in 2010 and encouraged me and my friend Mike to put in for the following years draw. From then to the deadline of the draw we all talked about this dream hunt, i swear i crossed every finger wishing id be drawn :-D

As it turns out Mike and I both did get drawn, Shaun unfortunately didnt but was still very eager to get out with us in September

From the day i got the news i was drawn i went out and bought everything i thought id need for a goat hunt, down to a new Rifle-Browning 280 Rem A Bolt II. Picked out a good bullet and studied ballistics and the best sight in distance to reach out and touch something with angle shooting being taken into consideration

i also started working out 3-5 times a week, the Grouse Grind became my new home. I started to get to know people from doing it so much :-D I will say with all that working out i still can say it was a hard hunt

(part 2 coming)

Opening day:

Mike and i arrive to meet Shaun in town, we head to Walmart to grab a few last minute things and then make the remaining journey to camp.

I felt like a kid driving to camp, i couldn't wait to be in my LEH zone...as soon as we pulled off to do some unloading i took out the binos and spotted a nice lone Goat WAY UP. Although i knew it was in the steepest hardest area i was eager to go..lol. Shaun and Mike laughed and both said we just got here, Shaun assured me another area down the road was perfect for spotting Goats in a area assessable.

Driving down the road we are all talking away admiring the area and low and behold on the road is a legal Bull Elk 50 yards ahead of us! im elk tag-less and Shaun and Mike are tagged up. The bull turns and takes off slowly around a bend and disappears  we look and look...nada!

That's a lesson to always be fully tagged and expect to come out fully bagged. You'll run into a legal Ram next....

a few minutes later down the road we stopped to glass the Mnts, i quickly spot a group of Goats...Shaun then notices 3 other Goats on a lower area and a plan is made to head in for a closer look. We load up and begin our trek in, Mike hangs back and Shaun and i make the LONG hike in to look. We arrive to find only one Goat to be seen, a large Billie. We both range him at 400 yards and we decide heading in closer would be impossible because we would be in the open the entire time, i felt confident i could make the shot but decided that with light losing fast and the area he was in he might tumble making it hard to find. So i passed on the shot and we hiked back down getting to the truck in the dark with our headlamps

Back at camp we talk about the following days game plan, we decide to leave camp after 4 am and get to the area and see if we could spot the goats from below. We wait about 30 minutes For it to get brighter and I notice the goats, we load up for the trek again...hours and hours later we start to get out of the timber and make our way up to a plateu to look and locate the goats, nothing! We wait and keep looking, nothing. We try hiking angles looking, nothing. We hunker down , eat and all nap. We decide to return to camp because from where we were we couldnt hike into anywhere else... We planned to return in the later afternoon to see if the goats came back and if they didnt we were going to plan getting into other goat country

Back at camp over lunch we talked about hiking into other areas if they dont return, soaked our feet in the creek for an hour and loaded up to try and spot the goats back in that spot.

After arriving we glass for 15 minutes, all hopes are dying of them returning when Shaun says "there they are" I say , " coming over the tallest peek?" we both were on them... We load up and hope they continue down feeding while we hike up

When finally get to the top plateu we see see them feeding workin there way down slowly. He wide behind a nole and glassed them from a distance away. I was able to pick out the larger Goat as a mature Billie, Shaun and Mike repaond that the other two were billies too! We were stuck at that nole waiting for them to get lower down behind the rocks so we could get the 150 yards across the openess into a bowl to be clear to cover the distance for a shot. A game plan was made and Mike and I planned to crest the hill after we catch our breaths and aim for a large rock as a rest. I peeked over and saw the goats 258 yards out, two were bedded down one was feeding. I told mike before heading for the rock I'll go for the left on you go right one.... We crept to the rock, set up and whispered on what to do.. We thought my goat would stand up, Mike asked if he should shoot his and get mine to stand up. I said no and was confident I could hit the Billie in the shoulder to anchor him on the ledge. I said on one fire, ready ... 3-2- fire. My shot was true on my goat, Mike hit his goat and it started down hill, he quickly put it down. A few rolls and it was done. Two Billies down! That third Goat was sleeping alone tonight..lol

The inspection determined my goat is clearly 8 years old, he has two rings that aren't defined enough and could be 10years old. Everyone that aged it got 10yr, all I know is I sam happy with this

Congrats one your goats!! That is a beautiful area. I worked there for years designing those roads and cutblocks in the area.

On opening morning I was right at the top of the mtn in your last pic. There were two very nice billie's right on the ridge line one draw south of where you guys were. One in a shadowy crack near the top, and one laying in the sun right on the skyline, next to a snow patch.
