. anyway this isn't really about me it's about my best buddy. For years now he's been coming with me on and off into God's Country. First thing in the morning on Sept. 1/06, we put on our packs, full of a weeks supplies and hiked/clawed/swore our way up a long steep ridge that connected onto Buck Mtn. It actually wasn't that bad of a hike as we took our time and enjoyed the sites and all the big tracks in the shale up on top. Once we were about 600 yds below the top we found a nice spot to stay. We glassed where the bucks were and could not see a thing. As it was fairly hot out in the open sun, we set up our tent and got some shut-eye from 3pm to 5pm. I woke up first to a nice cool breeze and decided to go for a bathroom break. I grabbed my rifle and binoculars and was only about 50 yards below camp when I noticed something, yellowish gray, laying in the shale between some stunted pines. I looked through my binos and could see a nice 150 class buck sleeping out in the open sun. I quickly snuck back to camp and my buddy was just getting up. I quietly said "get your gun loaded, there's a nice buck sleeping 250 yards above camp"!. We only had to crawl about 50 yards above camp and he was wondering if he should get his boots on. I said "screw that this is a dead deer so lets get going". I made him crawl up with me in his longjohns and socks! Once we got in to position I could tell he was jacked. I said "you go ahead and take him" and made him a rest out of a compression bag stuffed with clothes. He finally found the buck in his scope and the lead began to fly, the buck quickly piled up in a shale slide and he hollered. He came over and hugged me and I pushed him back jokingly and said "That is why we hunt in God's country buddy". When we got over to his buck he was blown away by the size of the rack and body. He just kept shaking his head and turning the bucks head back and forth. I skinned the buck out and boned all the meat and took the head off for him. We loaded up the next morning and hoofed it back to my truck where I had a cooler full of ice blocks just in case. I could tell he was pretty blown up from the hike out and was anxious to show his family and friends his first big buck! So we headed home. He and I know he'll be a high country mulie nut for life and hey he deserved it for following me around all these years. As for those book bucks, they'll be there next year and next time they'll be two obsessed mulie hunters after them and not just one!
I'll post some pics when I sort out this new computer world I'm in!

Right on JMac you definitely picked a site with some serious and high climbing mountain muley hunters, altho I hunt mainly in colder weather so far, around last week in october I get ready to get serious. I hunt usually under 4000 ft. It's always good to have another hunter to add some of his or her knowledge and experiences. It's good to have a buddy like you got, I have three hunting buddies that I hunt with. Anyway good story and will be looking forward for your threads on "how to" hunt muley and blacktail.
