MOUNTAIN MAN - TOYOTA/ATV

Last Saturday, Sept. 3 around 6:00 a.m., my Uncle and I go hunting. We drive on old trails through logged areas. We hiked around the area. Then we hiked up the nearby mountain – really steep. At the top, there was a huge tree with antler rubs and elk tracks nearby. We look for any signs of bear or deer. No shed antlers but lots of bear poop. We returned home during the heat of the day.

Later around 4:00 p.m., we went out hunting again. We drove a long ways and saw two deer and a rabbit. We were driving more up in the bush on rough roads and in logging areas. On a road that was tree-lined, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a black bear down in a deep ravine. I said, “Bear – over there! My uncle stopped the truck, walked a ways with his gun loaded and saw the bear too. “Boom!” My uncle came back to the truck for his backpack and headed down the ravine – really steep – hard to see the ground – lots of logs to climb over. My uncle went looking for the bear and the bear rise up on its front legs, so “Boom!” again. My uncle climbed up the ravine for water and a rest.

We drive the truck closer above the bear’s location. We headed down the ravine together. I fell down once – very slippery and lots of logs and plants. Finally, we make it to the bear and slice its tendons in the ankles. We insert a stick and use this to haul it up the ravine. Heavy work – long time! By the time we hauled the 250? pound bear up the ravine it was 7:30 p.m. - almost dark.

When we got home I helped my uncle cut and hang the meat in his cooler room. We plan to make sausages, smokies and bear jerky.

Later, I will clean the bear skull.
