So it was Thursday morning and this year I was heading out with my 10 year old, and my two twin nephews. Only one of the 3 boys has completed his hunting program, so I promised the other two they could shoot my guns, and drive my off road hunting vehicle when we were off paved road. Anyways Thursday seemed like the longest morning ever at the office but soon the four of us were on the hwy heading to Kamloops. We arrive at 7:30pm to get everything ready for an early morning hunt, and off to bed early.

We awoke to a sunny but cold morning, 4 degrees and we managed to leave at 6am. We head straight to the same spot I had been taking my older nephews previous years to see my friend M.Dean with his grandson, I asked them what way they wanted to head and with a point of a finger they were off and I decided to take the one boy who had his tag for a walk,
15 minutes later I have him gently creep down a hill of bush because I know of a slash below that usually has deer in it, 5 minutes with him he spots a doe, a close look shows 3 does. I tell him where does are we usually have a buck so scan all around the tree lines….and in the middle of the slash and a thick bush out walks what looks like a buck to me, and further examining I for sure see antlers. I tell him to get as comfy as he can, that it’s a long shot but I know if he stays calm he will nail it, it was around 150 yards (At the time we both swore 250 yards.:)) anyways he got the rifle on him, steady, he says he’s broad side and I have a perfect shot exactly where I told him he should shoot. I said if its good then when you’re ready, fire.

BANG!!! We both think it pancaked but weren’t sure, we hike back to the truck, grab our gear and the other two kids, and off we go,
Exactly where the buck was, the buck was now laying. One hour into his first hunt, and his first shot ever, perfect, and now he is happier than I can describe, he got his first buck and I was very proud. It was exactly how its suppose to happen and how we discussed.
So the rest of the long weekend we fished, ate, swam, campfired, 4x4’d and relaxed. AWESOME!

I'm not sure who was more excited Chris, you or the lucky younger hunter! When my Grand Son and I stopped to look at the buck on the roof of your SUV, the young fellow described every second of the hunt, in about 30 seconds to us, then retold it about 4 times, he was one proud young Hunter!!! Congrats to all of you, hope to see you guys back up this way, M.Dean
