Junior got his deer yesterday morning. 150 yard up-hill shot. We were going to a spot where we saw deer a couple of days before. Past the spot where we had the bear encounter. As we were driving past a cut-block I looked ahead and to the side and there were 2 deer standing on the slope. I said to junior "DEER". That got his attention. I looked thru the bino's and saw antlers. He got out to look and noticed two bucks, one smaller 2 point in velvet and 1 larger out of velvet. He lined up on the bigger one and squeezed the trigger. The .270 went boom and Mr. deer went down. He kicked for a about 5 seconds and then suddenly got up and ran away. There was no follow-up shot because it would have just been a back end shot. The deer went over another knoll and was gone. I said "not again". I knew he was hit good because it knocked him over. We get to the spot where he went over the knoll and crap, no deer anywhere. We looked for about 30 minutes and suddenly junior yells from about 30 yards away from me, "there he is". He was tucked down in a little hollow resting his head on a log, still alive. After a final shot he was down. After gutting and a 300 yard drag over a 1 year old logged out area he was in the truck and then hurry up and get him skinned and in the cooler.
After feeling bummed-out because one got away from us on Friday, the best way to get over that is to get another one and learn from the experience.
On Sunday we went and spent the afternoon target shooting. That helped a lot to boost confidence in knowing he can hit something. So this is the little guy he got Monday morning.
