Anyone chime in and say what these critters are?? I have hunted in the same area since I was a little kid, and have NEVER seen these on any of our deer. Mind you I never had a youth season for Sept 1st either. All 3 of the deer shot by our kids had these critters all around their junk, I suspect they are ticks, but not sure. Sorry for the iPhone pic Thanks

hmmm, crappy. Been in this same area for 30 years and never seen one. Both deer my daughters got had them, 15-20 on one and around 30 on the other. Nephews spike also had them on it.

I have seen them on almost all of my early season whitetail that I have taken.

My son's buck from this weekend had a ton of ticks as well. His other early season bucks in past years had them too. Doesn't seem to matter what elevation they've been living at either. I've never seen them on a deer after Sept but I suppose it's possible.

My mulie I shot near Kamloops had them last year. Got him mid-Oct and he had quite a few.
My bear from this May shot near PG also had a couple.

Creepy little things.

Yep, deer ticks. I've seen them in October in cold weather (surprisingly). And, they carry Lymes, moreso than wood ticks. Beware, especially of the nymphs, which are more potent Lymes carriers than adults.

to me it doesnt appear to be a tick, in the pictures the front legs appear to come from a squared center/body with a round bum.

Ticks are shaped like a tear and have 8 legs

100% ticks (or so I thought) ... normal for this time of year. Everyone of my sons youth season deer had them. I've also seen them on deer in October but not as often. Just be as careful as you can and scrub em up good when you get home ... a double check of the kids never hurts either.

Thanks FG. The ones I have found in deer's ears (8 legs) do look different from your pic, now that I looked at it closely.

Good to know those ones are just a fly. Ticks are bad news. Now ya got me scratchin'!

I am actually a little surprised how many people said that those are ticks and a few were actually saying 100% ticks. the first thing i did 20 odd years ago was look that up when i found them on the deer i had shot.
i do not recall one deer or elk that i have taken without seeing at least a few of them on the body. i have never actually found a tick on any of the animals i have shot, except for a poor rabbit that had lots stuck to his face and were huge and grossly swollen.

Thank you Finngun! I was told they were ticks and never questioned it but your link clearly shows that they are not. Learnt something new today!

I was always told that those little critters were "deer lice" and similar in nature to human "crotch crickets".

The ones I saw this weekend on my son's buck were indeed ticks. I know what a tick looks like. Have picked a ton off of me in years past while shed hunting in spring. I've had some sheddin' days where I've picked over 40 of the little buggers off of me. And yup, I've had them drill into me too.

Always thought they were ticks. Who would have thought? I think I will continue to treat them the same. looks like a tick acts like a tick kill it like a tick! They still make my skin crawl.
