Has anyone used Hornady Light Magnum cartridges for a 270 win? They are 140gr. I was wondering if they would be good enough to take Moose hunting. Unfortunatly the Federal NP's I was going to take don't seem to like my gun too much.

Go for it. I used the 139gr .280Rem load with good results, until I started handloading it was my do all load.

I saw a moose hit with one quartering lung shot from a regular 130 gr 270 and he took two steps, staggered and was down for keeps

I have shot most of my moose with a.270, 140 Hornady Interlock at 2970 FPS and I never met a moose that did not go down. Just shoot them in the boiler room and keep your shots under 275 or so. Good bullet and good caliber.

Well placed shot is all it takes. I have friends that take moose every year with 270 win. They all laugh at me cuz i use a 300 ultra mag.

Would you recomend the interlocks over the light magnums?

both use the Interlock bullet, the LM ammo is just a hundred fps or so faster. use whatever shoots better in your gun

Yeah, I have downed 3 moose with my 270 using 150gr Federal premium NP's. They usually stand around for 30 seconds or a minute and then fall over after being shot. IMHO I agree that shot placement is the key and 10 grains isn't going to make alot of difference as long as the bullet has good weight retention and adequate expansion. Good Luck!

I say an elk dump right over with a 7mm 08 with a 139 gn SST light mag, one shot down! Probably very similar to the 270.
