My father-in-law came up for a weekend visit and I asked him if he wanted to stick around an extra day and come with me on a morning moose hunt( as a spectator). I told him I work night shift on the 15 , but could go for a morning walk. Thats what we did ,we arrived at the spot I wanted to walk at day break. I had already decided on a timber hunt because of the lush vegetation this year. I thought seeing one in the open could be tough. We walked the large aspens that skirted an over grown clearcut. After about an hour and only seeing a couple mule does I heard a noise in the timber so stopped to look around. About 70 yards away I noticed a moose looking at us through dence cover , my binoculars told me it was the bull we were looking for. A shot seemed to be impossible but I wanted to get ready, so as I was putting in the shell he started to run. I let out a low cow call and this stopped him dead behind a large aspen tree, only his head was now exposed. I felt this was my only shot. I took the shot and said to my father-in-law where did he go he said he dropped with lightning speed. YAHOO we took a couple pictures and set the camera on auto for a couple more and then got to work. We got back to town and a buddy helped us skin it at the cooler all said and done and we were home by 11:00 my moose season over ( happy and sad lol ) I had a great morning with my father-in-law and was happy it all came together while he was there to see it.

Great early season moose and well looked after, should be fine at the table.... oh, great presence of mind to have the FIL in the "group" picture, you're really making serious points here.

The antlers were a bit strange long single brow tines and long first paddle tines about 16 inches each. The one side had a tine that appeared to have been broken there was a large knuckle formed under the velvet. It gave the look of a drop tine. A strange rack for sure , but I was mostly interested in what was under it. We were down to about a 2 weeks supply of meat from last year. This one came at a good time and it should be prime eating, we love the taste of a young August bull.
Thanks to everyone for the nice comments.

It was fun to have him along. He enjoyed being there for the shot and was right into helping with the processing. It was a good day for both of us and I know he will enjoy the chunk of meat heading his way.
