We went camping over this past weekend, and among the activities was finding my older son (3 1/2) his first fish - he lost interest after about 10 minutes of me nagging him to hold his rod with both hands ( I tied the rod to the boat just in case), but he quickly re-gained interest after about 1/2 hour when I caught and lost a small rainbow. His new-found paitence paid off after a little bit, here's the result:

He was hooked at this point, and decided to show his old man how it's done:

A very nice 18.5" Rainbow, not bad for a second fish, I'm not sure but I think I need a bigger boat before he catches his third.:-D

Awesome! Today it's his first fish. A few years from now it will be his first deer. Kids grow up so fast, but moments like that one last forever. Congratulations!

Dude thats awesome, you know what is even more amazing, is when the kid gets so passionate about fishing you wont let you tie his own hook, or bait it. Ive been blessed able to take my boy since your sons age fishing at my cabins. How many kids at age 7 have entered into the 5lb club. Some of you may have seen this pic, but I love posting it!

Thats great your son got his first fish. Now hell be saying " Dad, when can we go fishing."
I noticed your son has a whistle on his jacket is that for if he gets lost? Its a good idea.

Nice catch! I know the feeling well with my oldest doing the same. It's so fun to see their eyes light up and them talking about for days after.

Thanks everyone, it was definitely the highlight of my weekend, and certainly made up for the fact that all 3 fish I caught got off at the boat and the only thing I managed to actually bring to the boat was a 6' tree limb.

Coach, funny you mention the first deer, as Nathan asked 2 or three times that day to go hunting as well.

Nature Girl, I attach a pealess (important as the pea type don't work well when wet) whistle to all my lifejackets for emergency use in case of capsizing, etc, as it's a heck of a lot more effective than trying to yell for help. The kind of thing you hope it's never needed but always there if it ever is.
