Hunting elk in the Okanagan is not easy, they are here, if you head three hours east it gets easier, and then further easier again. Hunting elk in region 8 is a huge challenge and a lot of work, good luck and if you spend time you will give yourself that chance at an elk

I was curious as to what other hunters think. I have hunted Elk in the Okanagan for over 25 years and have the luxury of living 15 minutes from my hunting area. I observe elk and their habits 8 months of the year.
I watch cows in mid may, then they seem to disappear for most of June and early July. They emerge with young calves at this time. Considering an Elks gestation is 8 months I count back from the end of May and it tells me they were likely bread the first two weeks of October. Now I realize the bulls are getting a little worked up in September but it is the cows that control the breeding time. If they are not in estrus the bull is out of luck. (I can relate to that.) I have been successful in the past, and live every year for Elk season. the Elk I hunt are not very vocal, and a lot of time walking ugly country will pay off. My biggest problem is, I can shhot further than I am willing to drag.

Most Elk gestation studies show a range from 240 - 262 days with a population averages of 255 days.. You can bump up the peak estrus period in your area by a couple of weeks.

Great information. After sitting down with my calculator and slide rule I will be hunting hard Thurs Sept 22. Too bad it wasn't that easy. The more time I spend chasing them, the more I realize just how unpredictable these critters can be. I guess that's why they call it huntin, not catchin.

The peak of the Elk rut is when the herd bull is laying the pipe to the lead cow the rest is all just smoke + mirrors
