Hey Gate

I am working on another knife that I can donate

any chance on a category for largest out of province deer?
If not it could go for largest mulie buck by a junior (gotta start these kids off with a good knife)

thanks

Thanks Blacktail, your knife donations have been a great (and consistent) addition to the contests!

HBC is for BC, so I think we need to keep the entries in BC, as we always have. I'm not keen on opening the door to Africa, Alberta and USA hunting trips on our little contest...I could see myself going batty with trying to keep track of all that. :)

vip_ Ruger has donated a $100 Gift Certificate for Corlanes Sporting goods. Thanks!

Once I get a few prizes organized I can start establishing categories...Stay tuned everyone.

Went for an early morning hunt with my son, Josh, today. Took a trip up King Eddy, because it's close, normally don't hunt up there on the weekends because of the traffic, but I needed to be home by 3, so that was my only real choice. As some of you may remember, most of my hunting commute is done in a mini van, so I usually park near side trails and hoof it. Today was no different, parked at the front of a road to an old cut block and we headed in for a look see. When we got to the edge of the but block, I started glassing anywhere I thought a mulie would blend and ended up setting them to rest on this guy. I would have passed him up if my son hadn't been with me, it was a 330 yard shot, uphill grade and a LOT of slash. Unfortunately, I looked down to see Josh smiling and looking at me with his hands over his ears. LOL. Had no choice at that point, took the shot and the bugger ran another 120 yards, FURTHER UP THE HILL! Sigh, rifle over the shoulder, off we went, Josh happily bouncing beside me. When it was all said and done, I had to drag the thing almost 500 yards down the hill over dead falls and old slash pile, up a knoll, then another 500 or 600 yards uphill to the van. Have to remember to go back later and pick up my lungs. LOL But, Josh was happy and we'll have pepperoni soon enough. Here's a couple of shots.

Just so everyone is aware
the knife for the Junior award will be specifically made for the winner
The junior who wins this award will be able to choose the handle material, spacer material, etc just as if he was ordering a custom build from me.
I am working on grinding the steel as of this post and will send away for hardening and tempering to wait for the winners choices.

The winning knife will be in a slim handle full tang design such as the one shown

Figure I saw this buck on the 17th (the week before) but we were on the quad and visibility in the fog was about 40 yards. We came around the corner and there he was, about 40 yards away so 1 jump and he was gone. Went back the next week with my 9 year old son who was a trooper for the 40 minute bike ride in the pouring rain and then hiked in about 1 KM to where we had seen the buck before. Sure enough, there he was (wish it happened like that more often) only this time he had underestimated our sneakiness! Again only 40 or 50 yards away he saw me right away and started to rear back to take off but a snap shot right in the white patch put him down hard. A short but steep pack up to the road and an interesting ride back to the cabin with me, my boy and a 155 lb buck on the Yamaha BW 200 and all was good!
Cheers, JP

Went for an early morning hunt this morning, despite feeling like crap and the pouring rain. Headed up King Eddy again for a look see, drove around for a couple of hours and saw nothing but cattle. Had pretty much given up because of the unrelenting rain, turned around to head out, drove maybe 100 feet and looked to my left to see this guy and his younger brother staring down at me from about 80 yards away. Got out and popped this guy in the neck, his buddy was curious enough to stay put and watch me gut him from 40 yards back.

Story or link to story:

I was on my planned spot just before 5 AM, at about 6:00 I heard some activity in the bush, started to get excited but then nothing for about 15 minutes. As I began to relax, more noise to keep me alert and after 15 more minutes this fellow walked into the lick and stood nicely for a vitals shot from my 300 WinMag. After the shot, he jumped forward and turned towards me walking to within 20 feet, not seeing me at all. I knew it was a solid shot and he was going to bleed out in a minute or two but my need to put him down quickly got the best of me and I decided to shoot him in the head to put him out of his misery.

Well... that was probably not the best idea, the first shot to the head seemed to be a miss, no reaction from the big guy except to stand in front of me dripping gobs of blood from his mouth and nose and continuing to wobble on his feet. A second shot to the head quickly followed with a reaction from my quarry of slowly walking up hill angling away from me to a spot where he lay down.

I figured good, he is down and will die in a nice recovery spot.

Well, be damned if he didn't get up and start to slowly walk deeper into the bush. I waited for him to stop (seemed a long time but was probably only 30 seconds) his slow wobbly walk and when he did and turned his head slightly, aimed another at his brain cavity. He went down in a crash, kicking all fours and I walked over and cut his throat to ensure a good bleed. Blood gushed out in big clots from his windpipe as I did it so I knew the first shot was deadly and my impatience was just a waste of 3 shots.

It worked out that all shots connected, the first being a double lung and the head shots all on target but only one hitting brain. In retrospect I have always figured, no matter how close an animal is, that head shots are a bit dangerous as the kill zone is very small and a wounded moose/deer/elk with one in the head is going to suffer an agonizing death if the kill zone is missed. My "head" shots were all within an inch of my aim and only one would have dispatched the animal immediately, the other two would likely have been a day or two tracking job with a likely loss of the animal.

With doe draws in their pockets I went out with my son "The Beast" and my good buddy BZMikey and his daughter. We jumped the beasts doe crossing a grassed in old road into some thick christmas trees. The beast and I planned to get around her and try and push back into the open for Mike. However as it turned out she instead gave The Beast a very small softball sized window to her vitals in the thick stuff instead, he made a great freehand shot and she stumbled out of sight. Luckily she was not alone and her buddy shot out of the thick stuff, across the trail and hung up in more snarly stuff allowing BZMikey to get his shot off. Just like that the doe tags were filled!

Story or link to story: I Visited Willy_Qbc friday afternoon simply because we both have been too damn busy to hook up ... I get to his place around 1300 and we go for a drive to look for deer sign.... I had a doe tag in my pocket that I am not gonna burn this year(I put in for it as a suppliment to my moose draw). we are not really seeing much for sign at all ... after a couple hours and several traditional hotspots checked for sign Willy finally turns to me and says " I can understand the lack of deer with all the predators that moved in but you think a guy would be seeing some bear sign too." no more than a minute after those words left his lips we see this beauty in the block .... Sensing an opportunity I hop out of the truck and grab my rifle ... stumble a bit .... put my smoke out, go back to the truck as I didnt have bullets in my pocket ... the bear didnt moved off a bit but wasnt concerned about us .... it was tucked in behind some scrub but left me with a small window to shoot through .... I made the 140 yard freehand shot count.... I dressed it out and we went looking for more deer sign ... and the bear was hanging in Willys shop a couple hours later and http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/Mike_C_bear_11.JPG

Well as Chris basically stated above, The beast and I had Doe tags in Our pocket and were looking to fill them .... we had gotten to a Block for sunrise to check it out .... after sunrise came discovered there was no deer in that block we decided to move on to the next one .... On our way ... we see "The Beast"s doe .... Both him and I pile outta the truck and come up with a quick plan to ambush her ... as we both have tags ... it was decided that "whoever got the shot gets the glory ;)" He got that one ... but the report of that shot kicked up another .... I was watching the road for "the beast"s to come out..... the Beast and Willy both see my doe cross the trail behind me, and are both triing frantically to get my attention ... my 7 year old daughter see them coming out of their skin and lets me know ... and they point inside the thick bush at where this doe was standing ..... all I could see was her head and the top part of her back .... the rest of her body was protected by bush (the Archery guy in me told me not to even attempt to shoot through that scrub) so I lined up the best I could with the small window I had to work with and dropped her ... about 35-40 yards freehand through tight bush. Had to finish her off with a head shot as I got high (I am sighted 3.5 high at 100) ..... My daughter and I dragged her back to the trail and waited untill we got the "Clear" signal from The Beast saying that his doe was located and expired. Where we were we had cell service so at 0802 I emailed a picture to my wife at work ..... Just like that 2 tags filled .... the Mojo was back in our group for a while.

Picture in Willy_qbc post shows me with my doe ... this is the pic I emailed my wife

After a week of searching my usual spots I was coming up empty handed, everyone else in the group had their deer within the first 4 days, so I was getting nervous. Well it was worth the wait, I usually take a spiker but this year I managed to get my first 4 point. Not a giant but still a first for me.

Story: Well as some of you may know I succesfully drew an LEH for a moose in 3-18 this year. I have been draw 4 times (counting this time) and never shot a bull. My hunting father has shot a moose when he was in our group draw. This year I decided to put my mother and in for 3-18 we normally put in for the areas around Likely and stay in a family cabin. We had an LEH for 5-15 2 years ago and decided that the hunting wasnt good enought to warrent going all that way. Now I put in for the area around Savona becuase my grandparents own a house on the lake. I was unsure of the amount of hunting I would be able to do this year as I started college this fall.
We started our trip from Burnaby at 5pm and did not arrive in Savona until after 10:30 pm (damn merging system in the city). When we arrived we (I) realized that the LEH papers were still at home in the freezer... so we got in touch with some friends and got the papers the next morning. Due to the missing papers we decided to sleep in to 7:30, we collected the LEH documents and a moose tag from the Savona store, then proceeded to the top of mount savona to try for a a bull moose that my grandfather had seen earlier this year. We arrrived on the top to find more than a dozen other people hunting, and decided that we would walk some swamps to wait out the other hunters. We returned to the tracker at a little past noon. Most of the other guys had left the hill so we proceeded down to small treestand in one of the lower slashes. My grandfather sat behind a stump vocalizing a moaning cow moose in a birch cone while I sat up the tree. 30 minutes went by with no response. Then out of the tree line came a serenade of coyote barks and howls. I couldnt see them (lucky for them), and after 10 minutes of staying out of sight they became silent. I can only assume that they decided to leave the cow moose with a blaze orange hat alone.
We left onto a lower road with more than 2 hours of daylight left. Not wanting to go home empty handed we tryed a road which always has grouse on it. We had nearly lost all hope of seeing anything living when we came across a brood of 5 ruffed grouse. I got out of the tracker with my .410 mossberg 500, and proceeded to walk towards the brood which was approximately 20 yards up the road. The grouse must not have felt threatend by my presence because all 5 proceeded to walk towards me. I got to 5 yards from the closest grouse when I shot it in the head. The rest of the brood took to the air, 2 went up hill and the other went down a bank. I could still the 2 that went up the hill. One had landed in a tree about 15 feet up, I took aim and the grouse came to the ground in a flurry of feathers. The other grouse flew away up the hill. We came home just after dark with 2 nice cleaned grouse.
The next day started at 5:30 am we decided to go somewhere further away from civilisation to avoid the traffic. I was feeling optimistic about our new location as we only saw one other vehicle on the way in. We got to a slash that had been freshly logged. It was a rather large slash so it took us 20+ minutes to get to the end and back. We rounded a corner, and there was a cow moose 50 yards away from us staning in the middle of a road with a bull 5 yards behind her. I got out of the tracker with my .270 loaded the magazine into the rifle and chambered a round. I could see the antlers on the bulls head before I looked through the scope. He thought he was “hiding” behind a tiny christmas tree. But his top half was exposed, so i could clearly see his hump and head. I lined up the crosshairs below his hump and let fly a 140gr federal premium accubond, which found its mark. As I brought the gun down to chamber a follow up shot the moose took off at a trot across the road and 100 feet into the timber on the other side. I took chase up and over a bank and found him keeling over onto his front legs. It looked like he was going to get up and run so I fired another shot at his neck. He then rolled over and died. After 3 years without killing any BIG game I was hooting and hollering.
We gutted the moose and called the girls to bring the truck up. The first shot went directly through both lungs. The second which we found after skinning severed his windpipe. It couldnt have landed in a better spot. We backed the truck right up to a bank and pulled the bull out with the tracker and some rope.

So after succesfully drawing for a bull 4 times I have FINALLY shot myself a moose. Ill let you be the judge but im extremely happy with him. Weighed 482 pounds skinned and hanging.

Story: I'll post the full story later this winter in the mainland section for some mid winter reading but heres the gyst of it: i took a week off during the early bow season and hunted hard each day. seen nothing except one little bull on the last day at last light, 90 yards out in a lake. no luck. then after that took every chance i could (rut bow season, rifle regular season avg 1-2 days each) to get out. i had drawn a late draw out my back door so thats what it had come down to. during the 4th day out 3 weeks into it we came across this bull. the snow was deep and access into areas was limited so we cruised the main road in the morning to see where the majority of activity was. we drove as far back as we could and settled on an area to walk into and were heading back to the area. a classic johnny horton song came on the radio and i was in the middle of saying "this is moose hunting music" as we rounded a corner and this guy popped onto the road. clearly seeing antlers i hopped out set up and a quick 200 yard shot and he was dead. there is something to this hunting in a warm truck :D . we snapped pictures, drove the 25 minutes back home, phoned family, got the ropes and pulleys and ramps, headed back out, had just enough rope to be able to drag him out whole and get it home whole. hung cleaned in the cooler by 3 pm, and boy is he tasty!

I have been hunting for a long time and the priority was always meat. The last few years I have been holding out for larger animals and the sizes have gotten better but nothing really worth mounting..... until today.

I have been busting my butt off climbing these damn hills quite a bit the last three weeks. I have been running into deer but not alot of bucks. With all this snow though, I knew that would change soon enough.

Today, I was supposed to go out with a buddy that lives a few houses down from me but he texted me at 6:30 when I was sitting out front his house that he was sick and would not be going.

Ok, head out on my own, no problem.

On the way up, run into 8 muleys and four whiteys thinking that it was already alot more than usual. The day is starting to have a good feeling.

Park the truck at the trailhead and head up. After 10 minutes, I run into a guy that I showed the place too last year and had a quick chat with him and his buddy. Nothing seen yet for them. Told them where I was heading and to give me some room for a bit and I would stay away from where they were going to be staking out.

Hike up for about an hour with nothing to report. Reach the bowl that I wanted to get to and start slowly going around the perimeter on the ridge. Almost get to the end and look back into the bowl and see a little tail with a tine or two going away from me.

I knew it was a whitey and it was a buck. I had no idea how big it was but I knew that I was getting tired of pounding this hill and it was time to drop another buck and end my season.

It was about 170 yards away. I line up with only a 4 inch window and pull. The deer vanishes from sight and I think "perfect, time to get my deer".

I take about 15 steps towards it and see the deer coming up the trail directly at me. At this point I think "WTF" and see alot more antlers and get on one knee and fire again. This time the deer bolts straight towards me AGAIN!!! After reloading again, I line up and he still does not know where I am, and I draw a bead on his neck and BOOM. Whitey down!!!

By this time, I am shaking like a leaf. I know he is a big buck but as I get closer with each step, his antlers get larger and larger. I am absolutely shocked to see what is lying in front of me as I get to the downed deer.

This is a 9 x 7 and easily my biggest deer rack. The body is not much but I can honestly say, I couldn't care less what the body size of this guy is.

Story:
This was on the 4th day of our 4 day hunt, we left for the 100mile house area on thursday morning and hadn't seen anything until saturday when we saw about 4 does. So we went out for our last hunt on sunday morning, I had hopped out of the truck while my dad and brother drove a little further up the road hoping to flush any deer back down the hill towards me. It was then that my dad saw 2 bucks similar size to this one but he decided to pass on them since it was the first time we had been able to get out hunting since I got my hunter # card a few years ago. Later as we were driving I saw this buck just a little ways off the road so I lined him up with the .308 and shot him. He was angling away from me and the shot went in a little far back, got a little bit of a gut shot but came out further up so he went down pretty quick and not far away! He's a 2 point mulie. All in all I'm happy with my first buck!! The gun I used was also the gun my dad used to get his first buck.

Story: Was out hunting Roosevelt elk on the island. I was watching a buck dog a couple of does, they were too much work to get to, so I kept going. Not 100 yards away, this guy jumped out and stopped broadside at 30 yards for far too long. I had to hop up on a rock about 5 feet up on the edge of the trail and shoot over the bank. Balancing I put an arrow into his lungs. Then he hopped 15 yards further and stopped again so I gave him one more. He then went 10 yards and fell over.

Been hunting this spot since the start of bow season. let lots of smaller bucks walk spent a lot of evenings and mornings there, then one morning it all came together. Walked in right at legal shooting with the rifle, left the x bow in the truck had been chasing whitey's but also brought the x bow since it was opening morning for bow season and have been seeing quiet a few muley's no monsters but you never do know. couldn't even get to my spot when i was surrounded by 8 muley doe's and 1 little 2 point he got within 10 yrd's but didn't have the bow in my hands would have let him walk anyway he actually spooked when i turned the video cam on got some footage before he split. So walked another 10 yrds to my spot hunkered down was just setting the video cam up when i spotted the 5x5 whitey at 100 yrds thought i hit rec ,put up and put'em down.ran down the hill a bit to make sure he was down and he was. was coming back up to get the camera and looked back down and there was a 3x3 muley standing 80 yrds from where the whitey lay. so videod the muley buck and then went to the truck and exchanged the rifel for the bow came walking back to my spot and the buck was still standing there with a hot doe so i proceceded with my stalk got to within 50 yrds a couple time's but couldn't make a shot.then after 200 yrds or so of close calls at 25yrd's I was able to let a arrow fly hit its mark and did quick work he made it another 30 yrds if that . The drag of these bucks is a whole other story. whitey wasn't bad the mulie was a pig, rack doesn't do that buck justice. A double header and it was all over for reg 8. sorry no field pic's,I was solo

We were walking across a valley calling every 20 minutes or so. We got across the valley and looked back and we could see this guy coming in hot. He was along way away but could hear him grunting. My partner kept occasionally calling as i made a bit of a stalk on him and next thing ya know were deboning and packing along way out to the road. He was just over 60 wide.

Not much of a story, found a kill site down near a lake. Set up on a little ridge overlooking the kill. Sat there a few evenings with no luck, finally a couple of days ago I went back, and only about 45 minutes after setting up this nice grey came in. One shot to the shoulder got it spinning around and a follow up shot anchored her. I thought it was a decent male at first, but turned out to be a large female. Estimated to be 100-110lbs, pictures don't really show it, but she was a big girl.
