I often go in the woods where the bears live and this is what I carry:

It"s my Browning 12 gauge side by each that I've owned for 35+years. Rottweil Brenneke slugs, of course and the less than lethal option, bear spray.
The knife is to skin the beast...

What do you use?:-D

338 win mag kimber montana, some may think its long but I don't see much of a difference in length personally. Its light and handles quick. I have a book from Tony Russ who is a guide in Alaska and he would chase after injured bears or do the finishing shot if the client's bear needed it. He used the 338 WM for the coastal grizzlies and the smaller highcountry bears , always loaded with 210 partitions. He later switched to a 416 mag and writes how he wants to find another good shooting 338. I feel more than comfortable in any territory with my 338 so thats what I bring along and I use it for other open seasons as well. I have friends who have the tactical shotguns all pimped out to do a drugbust for when they go out to bear country, but you can't even hunt or shoot clay pigeons with them very well so I think whats the point. To each their own on how you want to spend money, I just figure with my income why spend more money on a bunch of lesser quality guns when I can buy a couple nicer ones.

I've contemplated buying a Dominion Arms Grizzly 12.5" barreled shotgun with ghost ring sights for $300-350ish, or just getting one of their barrels for $150 and throwing it on my 870, but right now my money is going towards a scope, rings and stuff for reloading for my hunting rifle as I feel that it will have a much better chance of getting used while in the woods(though likely not for any sort of defense).

You're going with the right slugs but I think I'd use my 870 defender.

Thanks, it is very nice and handy. Dad gave it to me for my 15th birthday. I've shot a dump truck load of partridge, woodcock, pheasant, ducks, geese, quail, wabbits, grouse, pigeons, and even a couple of deer with it!

26" barrels make it a sweet swinging gun for bush work. It eject shells with authority and with extra shells in my pocket I am very quick to reload it. Many times I surprised dad with an extra 2 or 3 shots on a covey of partridge, lol.
