Okay, with no LEH this year I'm going unicorn hunting. Or at least I'll have a moose tag with me.

During a couple recent scouting trips I encountered some substantial moose sign. Sadly, one place was in Region 2 with no spike-fork season.

In the other areas the season doesn't open until October 15, well after the rut, but I was wondering if cow calling might still attract a young bull who still figures he might get lucky if he had been driven off by the big guys during the peak of the rut.

Besides concentrating of places with obvious signs such as tracks, droppings and rubs and of course wet boggy areas, what else would you advise?

you can call an immy in during rut , they are curious and want to see what is going on. when calling in moose patience is the key, do not call too loud as this may scare the immy away.

I have used a cow call and called in bulls as late as Halloween. I like the late hunt, and have had success calling around cows.

Usually late in the season, or early in the season, the little bulls are hot to trot and figure they will get a piece of arse before the big boys arrive or after the big boys are done!! if it looks like a smaller moose look closely those forks are hard to see from a distance. We missed a spike-fork last season cause the spikes were small, we shot the big bull with him, and 10min later someone else shot the spike-fork on an adjacent cutblock. Moosin

I have called imature paddle bulls in as late as Nov. up in #5 and #7 not really prolific but the 1s that responded came in like teenagers to a porn movie lol.

Drive around until you see one standing on the road. More miles = more moose seen.

Have your buddy with the LEH for the area stand beside you, most likely he will see tons of spike fork.

Leave your bullets back at camp..for sure you'll see a spike fork.

Actually, find the cow moose and hang around....those little guys like their company, other than that abandon the spike fork hunt entirely and travel further for a GOS on any bull.

We shot quite a few 2 spike moose on opening day over the years. So I'd have to say early season is best as we hunt any parts of the season.

Don't worry on Oct. 15th the little bulls are still wandering around in wander lust.....you hear a cow moose bawling like mad it usually means she isn't interested in her prong horned suitor....you bawl like a cow moose and the little moosies think your a cow that might be interested in them.

The key to finding a spike/fork moose is to hunt where there was a large amount of calves seen the season before. About half the calves will be bulls , and a good percentage of them may be 2 points or less this year.

According to local bio's about 25% of the calves are bulls...when asked how many of those would be spike/fork she just laughed, absolutely never said a "good percentage". :-)
