Looking at the new Excalibur Axiom and wondering if it would be good for taking down a moose cleanly with the right bolts and string?
It seems a lot lighter and easier to pack.
Want to get the right bow first time that will work for all my needs.
Moose and elk are on the plate this year. At least thats what my goals are now..:???:

Not a big fan of compound crossbows. Would really like to stay with one of the Excalibur models if possible.

Excalibur says that any of their crossbows will have enough energy to harvest any animal in North America however they also say that an Axiom would do the job on a moose but a more powerful model might be a better choice. See their article on choosing a crossbow at http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/content/display/select.

Nothing wrong with the Axiom at all. If you do your part, that crossbow will certainly bring down a moose.

Own a excalibur Exomax 225lbs, 350 feet per second, 125 gr broadhead. Shot 3 animals with it a black bear, moose, and bison. The bolt went through all 3 animals. With the moose the broadhead broke the ribs and contiuned all the way through it, @ 15 yards. The bison broadside shot, hit no ribs and the bolt barely made it through, @ 30 yards. These are excellent crossbow, but are hard to carry through dense bush, because they are so wide.

many moose died with a long bow and sharp rocks .... going very slowly .... the Axiom will do the job as long as you do yours

As most have stated the Axiom is enough bow to do the job, but the longer power stroke of some of the other bows mean more penetration and punch at the moment of truth.

The Axiom has a bit of a shorter stroke than say the Ghost 350 and therefore produces less punch. I think I'd opt for a bow that has the better KE, while still in your price range.

Thats what I am leaning towards. Thinking seriously about the Excalibur Equinox or Exocet.....Thanks for the info. Its going to be different lining up a moose with a crossbow for a change after taking 26 moose in the past 30 years all with a rifle.. Time for the old dog to learn new tricks!!

I'm sure you are aware that any archery equipment has a very limited range compared to a firearm, especially the average or lower kinetic energy bows and crossbows, but it is going to be a bit frustrating for you for awhile when you keep getting so close to a moose etc. that you are sure you could bag it with a rifle without even using your sights, but it is still out of range for a clean kill with your archery equipment. I know it was for me. Hopefully, like me, you can resist the temptation of trying too long a shot, ending up with a wounded animal.

Big Lew has it right. Really try to resist those longer range (for archery equipment) shots. It will be difficult.

No problem. Been around hunting long enough and don't get the adrenalin rush and HAVE to shoot any bull I see. I've let lots of bulls walk due to poor shot percentage or not the right bull.
I have almost as good a hunt when I come home empty handed(which isn't often). I also have a good rangefinder in mind as well,so, hopefully this will be as fun as I hope.
Got to shoot an Excalibur Equinox today and was happy that I could string it,cock the string and shoot it straight and on target.
Now to buy my own..

Have fun, crossbow hunting is definatly more of a challange for guys like you and I who want to pack them around the bush and get close enough for a shot.
