So my buddy in Australia sent me these pictures and asked me what kind of deer it is so I thought I'd tap into the collective brainpower of HBC. It's obviously an import but from where I'm not to sure. I have seen deer in Australia before and from what I gather they were whitetail which were brought over then escaped or were set free. That was down in Victoria though, East Gippsland to be exact. I didn't get a good look at them so who knows. I have seen tracks too, look like standard deer sign. These pics are from a park/reserve just south-west of the greater Sydney area.
So what do you think?

My guess as well, although there's a bit more white on the upper throat than some of the pictures I've seen.

Keep in mind this is in the south west Sydney area. I was thinking Rusa deer that came up from the Royal National Park...

I think they introduced just about every type of deer to Austalia. Including a few Asian varieties that we seldom see. Who knows?

Thanks for the input guys, I have to agree, looks tasty so I told my buddy the only definitive test is a "taste" test!
Also does anyone know why a female is called "hind" down under....

A Red Deer is a type of elk, and the body shape is all wrong for an Elk or red Deer, no rump patch and neck looks wrong, maybe a fallow deer

After a google session it might be a Red deer but looks more like a South American Brocket Deer.

I farmed Reds and Elk and though the cross breed (we used Elk bulls over Red hinds. English term) they are not closely related genetically.
Elk and Reds have different head and body shapes.
Elks closest relative is the little Sika deer from Asia which is very vocal like Elk.

I was doing a 'search' here & found this thread, probably long forgotten about now but for those that were interested in knowing the species type of this deer it's 100% a rusa deer. http://austdeer.com.au/deer-in-australia/rusa/
