Picked up an original Remington 700 Titanium in 30/06 and can't decide what to scope it with. I have short listed the following scopes.

VXII ultralight 3-9x33 with LR reticle
VX3 2.5-8x36 duplex

I am aware of all the technical specs on both, and honestly can't see any difference in clarity. The difference in eye relief is the only thing that has me on the fence. For those who have used the ultralights, what are your experiences? p.s. I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 on another light 30/06 and find the eye relief just fine-but Bushnell's site only lists one eye relief spec, and I don't know if that's min or max...

Light rifles do not need scopes. The light coming from them is bright enough to see what is in front of you.

As for scoping a lite rifle I would re-search what is available from the different manufactures and go from there. I myself like the Vortex line of optics.

I would say to buy a non light model scope as they are more rugged.
Besides you have already shed the weight with your rifle.

Oh and let me guess the caliber.............280 rem

If so, that would be a beautiful sheep/mountain rifle you have there.

Cheers

VX3 2.5-8x36 duplex

Great scope, all the magnification you need, and very light. Look no further.

X2 on Vortex.

Since the first 2 posts offer nothing helpful.......thought I'd throw my hat in the ring on this one too.
Based solely on its specs as a lightweight scope, I'd go for something like this. ;-)

Sweetness. What rifle did you remove that from? I see the ring marks.

Gunner was there anything you disliked about the Ultralight? Was the eye relief an issue for you?

I have a fixed leupold 6x on my 6lb model 7. Eye relief is great. I find that I leave all of my variable scopes on 6 anyways

both those scopes will work on a long action with Lightweight Talley rings/bases. But a 2-7x33 WON'T so don't stray from the sizes you mentioned above if those are the rings and bases you plan on using?

Thanks for the heads up-the rifle came with Talleys so those are indeed what I'll be using. The 2-7x33 too short?

Krico must mean the 2x7 is too short. I like a lite scope too, but I also like magnification. I bought a weatherby ultralight and wanted to go with the lupy 2.5x8 but it just wouldnt do on a long range number, for me anyways. I ended up with a 3x9 and wish I had 14x on the top end. I own a 2.5x8 mounted on my 325 short and it is a fine scope. Its doing range work that makes me want more power as my groups do shrink with it. In the field I have had good success with the 2.5x8. My son owns a lite 243 and I ran a straight 6x on it for a while. I liked it for him as it was one less thing to think about. I saw a nice lite rocky mountain rifle at the kamloops gun show once. It had a 1x4 on it. It sure was lite!

The 2.5x8 is a great scope Krico and gathers more light than the 33's. I also prefer the finger adjustable windage/elevation turrets of Vx-3.
Lots of complaints about the eye relief with the 3-9 ultralight but I would like to try it myself. You should bring the rifle down to the shop and ask them to mount it quickly and test the eye relief.

I have a few VX3 2.5-8 x 36 duplex on different calibers and am very happy with them. I also use VX3 3-9 x 40 duplex on others with the same results. Some have hundreds upon hundreds of rounds through magnum calibers and countless hunting trips without an issue. You get what you pay for.

I have a VXII ultralight 3-9x33 with LR reticle on my Titanium .300WSM, no problems. Before this rifle it sat on a Model 7 in 7mm SAUM, and again, no problems. Both scope you mention are great, the Ultralight is only a little lighter but I do like the LR reticle.

I'd go with the shorter version.

Not a big fan of variables so... 6x42 leupold.

I had the lightweight Leo and didn't like it AT ALL. The power ring was so tight it was near impossible to operate... sent it back and they fixed it under warranty but it was still really stiff. I am certain that under the lower light conditions a larger objective is way better too. I found the lightweight too dark and the clarity to be poor overall.

Yeah, not enough room between the objective bell and the power adjustment ring for those big 4 screw scope rings with the 2-7x33 on a Long action

Had the LW in LR and was happy with everything BUT the eye relief, If I was presented with an uphill shot, I would be wearing a nice bruise over my right eye.

x2 on the 2.5-8x36 I have a couple of Vari x 3"s in 1.75-6 compacts and always wish for a little more magnification
