lets say you're shooting from a pretty solid rest, at a range of 150 yards. the rifle in your hands is whatever you pack for moose

of the four options, where do you hold your sights??

I was looking for the brown selection but I couldn't find it so I chose red:mrgreen:

Slightly above the red would be my preference.

I guess because I only shoot arrows, "None of the above" is a more appropriate answer. But I wanted to play the game.

This is is a great tthread. This will be my first year hunting moose that I think I will be successful so I will be interested in the responses.

I think somewhere between red and green. So I will pick red.

I pick red, after taken my 180 gr. 06 the moose would be dead. IF he got up again i'd take blue, i think it could take two. Two 180's from a 30/06 Husqvarna, red and blue, he'd be makin lots of stew. Thats a lot a Bull.

At 150yrds a rest and a 300wm shooting 180 grains will knock that sucker down no problem, my view of damaging as little meat as possible would be one of my concerns especially if you've cut enough game you will understand! my 2cents!

i picked green becuase it rather shoot for the shoulder and break the shoulder.

At 150 yards with my trusy '06 shootin 180 grain Hornadies....I'd go for the pink, cause I know he'd fall down.......Maybe even left of pink, in the left eyeball, if he was not walkin....

The red looks a little too far forward to me, I'd go with blue and tuck one in right behind the shoulder.

I'd go a little higher than the red and slightly back...so I went red....nice bull hope I gt him in my sights this year

My reason for red. Slight 1/4 shot get front of near lung and lots of lung far side. Little lower dumps the blood good for a better bleed.

The bull is quartering sighty towars you.

Red, for sure.

Most margin for error

@150 yards with 180 gr 30-06 will go either the pink or red (slightly behind).

Great thread Tod!

I would hold just above red and let the 225gr Partition do the rest. :wink:8)

Now, I just need that bull to show up on Oct.7th or 8th first thing in the morning...now that would be PERFECT.

I'd choose blue, it looks as though it is still positioned on the edge of the leg muscle. It is a very slight qaurtering shot, not enough to have to plow through the shoulder/ leg and mess up a bunch of meat, as with red.

I wouldn't want to go too much higher than these two, unless busting serious shoulder bone. Something that I'm not fond of.

If I had to follow up with a second I'd try and place it just back of the eye and below the ear. I've "had" to put down two bulls in the last five years, running away from me after good double lungers. Both dropped instantly, one from a .243 @ 40yds, the other a .300 @ 130yds. They were both dead before (they just refused to believe it) the follow up, but why let them go any further than need be.

Nice bull, looks tasty.

I'd go with the blue. He's not quartering away enough to make a huge difference, you're still going to hit the vitals.

First Pink, Then Green, Then Red, Then Blue. Repeat As Necessary!

JT I think your shot would be in the shoulder blade, but I guess that's where you shoot things. I think the blue spot is best for a bow. I guess we will find out in a week or so.

where did you get that pic of that moose what a beast and blue where i would put my shot

150 yards with a good rest, I'd be very confident with Pink. Your green is slightly too far forward and maybe a little high. In front of the hump the shoulder blade and spine drop down fairly far before it goes back up to the head and neck. In actuality all those shots will down that moose but I wouldn't go for red unless I had enough gun to bust that front shoulder and penetrate through, that spot is fairly heavy bone and muscle.

Another good shot is to aim between the eye and the ear.

This is a pretty safe shooting shituation, if he gets up and runs you won't have a problem getting another shot into him.

I have never shot a Moose, but i would shoot a bit higher than the red dot.

If i had a really good rest pink dot.

Great thread, could someone do one with a bear??? please as i will be up in Canada after grizzly when i get time.

Cheers James

No question, blue, maybe a C-hair back even. If it goes in there, dead moose no second shot required. 150 yards, wide open, good rest, there should be no error. For all the red votes, I ask why blow up the shoulders and lose the meat? For a bear sure but a moose for the freezer?

bsa30-06
08-18-2006, 05:44 PM
My vote would be red, if there's nothing behind that monster.I've shot a bear and a muley with my 30-06 ( 180 gr silvertips) and both shots went straight thru.In a wide open field like that i'd hate to see where the bullet would stop if i missed or it went straight thru.

Pink out of the question...no head shots...ever. I don't like grenn...there's nothin to hit there. Blue is wasting way too much meat by blowing the front shoulder apart so I guess it's red you're dead. I still think I'd wait until he turned more broadside though.

Walksalot
08-18-2006, 06:55 PM
At that distance I would go behind the front shoulder. I might be inclinded to wait for the doulble lung pass through and waste no meat.
If it was fifty yards away or less my first consideration would be behind the ear.

i think you waste less meat with a blue shot than a red shot

Deerwhacker

Id go with the red for sure with my 300 wsm 180gn failsafe bullets.whats important to me is a killshot.

I love green. 2" down below the hump and he will never walk again, only wastes about 3 pounds of meat.

I would shoot blue with rifle or bow. Oh of course one shot is all you'll need!

Blue - I too think red looks a little too far forward.

It was a toss up between red and blue. But like Gatehouse said with the angle...go red.

08-19-2006, 06:20 AM
In that grain field i would shoot for the red spot. But in some of the mountains and swamps i hunt in you don`t want him walking in a canyon or big willow bog i will shoot for the green.

Just up from the red and blue.

Like it in the mid-top of the shoulder where there isn't as much bone/meat but you still break the shoulder.

I like the head shot idea(180 Gr. Hornadey Interbond from a 300 Weatherby) and would hope to take that shot...Blue would also be my more favorite shot ...but,,,I would also think twice about even shooting this bad boy...
For my family's taste preferences I have found older huge moose like this bad boy are tougher and a lot more gamier tasting....
I would end up eating most him by myself...I much prefer a smaller 3 or 4 year old bull......
That is an awesome picture though, and Im sure spotting that bull out in the wild would make anyones' heart beat through their chest..

Thanks alot...

Slight quartering shot I would go for 3 o'clock on the red dot. Full broadside I would go blue. That is with my rifle. With my bow at 30 yards I would go blue if I could stop shaking. Mike

I'd shoot at the blue dot at that angle with the rifle. With the bow I'd be shooting at the same place but would wait for a quartering away shot. Of course I'd probably give myself away by soiling my drawers first.

Just don't go too low from the pink, you'll end up in the brown.

3D is very different than 2D. That guy is quartering towars me but I'm unsure how much.......But I'm in for red IF it's a safe shot and he's not in Sask. I don't have a license for there.:lol::lol:

I felt the red & blue were a little close to the vegitation so I chose the green although I probably would like to be a little lower.

If I really wanted a giant moose rack to hang up on the barn wall, I believe I'd try and place my bullet slightly above the blue dot. From my experience that shot placement will typically guarantee the animal won't suffer and I wouldn't ruin any meat.
I've only shot one huge bull moose like that one and it was so bloody tough, rubbery and stinky my Labs wouldn't even eat it. I won't mention what my wife said when I started cooking the first roast from that old bull because this is a family site.
My family and friends like to eat a nice, tender three or four year old bull moose that I generally try and bring home for the freezer in early September, "just before the rut starts and the animal is in its yearly prime."

Good huntin'

Fun thread! Interesting variety of answers. If I was to shoot it as it stands (1/4 angle) I would go for the RED. If I was able to contain myself long enough on this bad boy, I would like to wait for him to take a step with that left leg to open the ribs and get a shot through the lungs. One way or other, at 150 yrds he's meat in the freezer!8)

Great post love the responces.

With out adout pink with a good rest , the first will drop him the second will put him to rest. and if the 7mm 175 grains failed there he would get it in the red but i hate to waste any meat so he might even get a 3rd in the pink

I don't think I would take the shot on this guy... He's all covered in funny colored blotches??? Must be leperacey or some thing???
Just kidding.. I think I would take just below the green because of the high grass. But it is hard to say unless your in the situation. I think ideally I would first take a boiler shot and if he started to do the 1000 yard dash then I would take a shoulder out.

About mid way between Red & Green. For me, Red itself would be my choice but here it is a little too close to the grass.
