...is a pretty good bear dog as well! :-D

Coming back from fishing this evening and I spotted this nice cinnamon bear a couple hundred yards off the trail. Bear looked okay from a distance so I grabbed the rifle and me and the dog snuck in for a closer look.

We got to within 60 yards, and I guessed the bear might go 6ft and had a nice rug so I figured what the hell, might as well shoot it. So I lined up ready to off-hand him one, but he spooked and hit the road. I was about to leave him when the thought popped into my head - let the dog run him for a bit.

We were in a huge logged off area where they had left the fir standing & I figured it was as good a place as any to let the pup chase his first bear. So I told the dog to get after him, and away he went like a black streak through the shrubs with me following as quick as I could.

He caught up to the bear in about 30 seconds and gave him a couple nips on the arse to speed him up a bit. Old bear didn't like that too much and headed for the first tree he could find and scrambled up. I caught up shortly and called the dog back from the tree, lined up the bear with my 300 WSM and touched one off.
150 TTSX drilled him through the heart and he hit the ground stone dead. Done deal.

Sorry about the crummy phone pic but it's all I had. Certainly an entertaining few minutes.:-D

The WSM has been sitting in the cabinet for a while. I try not to discriminate :) Woulda been fun to smoke him off that tree with the Lott though.

Rottweiler/Mastiff cross, be 3 years old in the fall. Best outdoors/hunting dog I've ever had.

Listen up, it's a razor sharp, I had my dog go at a bear and I was terrified, I was petra fried, I will survive and he did too but I scolded him, do not go in on a hit bear, any more you here me? I said you had a lot of guts but no more.
Don't let your dog do that, unless it's pro trained imho, for the love of your mutt.
I know I'm raining on your parade but not out of jealousy, I'm Jel u c.
My dog was twice the size and part northern wolf mally moot, POW!
Never again did I take him bar hunting, even racoons can lay a beating on a dog.
Jelvis .. It's my way or the highway for safety, get a pro to train a dog for you .. imho
You don't want your dog on a wounded Ursus Americanus.
Limp bizcit .. Sean Penn .. Jake O conner .. Dirt Nowitzky .. Wade .. Loooooooooo ,,

Brom r u serious about being a real dog trainer for black bear hunting because if you are joshin I'm not bossin u, I just remember that black bear I shot with an ott six at 30 yards broadside just behind the shold air brother. My dog went in and I was freakin big time, the bear was growling and turned into a 250 pound chain saw gone wild.
Six foot six weighed 249, my dog was in the shooting line. Finally my wolf dog was chewing on the bear as it died and I almost cried. I said never say never but never again, it was a sudden attack, my dog picked up the wind tho otherwise I wouldn't have known. But but but no more, and it stayed that way.
Jel .. Good luck in the bush, I hope your not Josh in me tho, but it's a chance we take.

Nice hunt. And look at the head on that brute! Nice and wide between the ears with the ears rolled off to the side. I am guessing what, 7 years old?

I *think* it was probably 4-5 yrs, still fairly young bear.
