what is the difference between the 2 and why one over the other ?

One is a short action mag capable of high velocity great accuracy and does very well when reloaded (270 wsm) the 270 winchester is a great rifle as well with fairly low recoil. If you are looking to pack a punch and take down larger game or want a gun that shoots very flat out to 400+ yards the 270 wsm would be the hands down choice.
