I just interested what other people have been paying to get bear hides tanned and do you think is a fair price? I'd also like to know where you get yours done.

150 bucks to cut the head and paws out and tan. Don't know if it's too much, I never shopped around.

A guy near here charges $40 and hour for skinning out the paws and head and any other fleshing that needs to be done. Plus $50 per foot to tan. This is for black bears.

So 360 for a six foot bear. That seems steep!

Do it your self and you will know why taxidermy prices are where they are. A good taxi earns every penny

http://www.fntpost.com/Products/Tanning+Kits+Supplies/Rittel's+EZ-100+Tanning+Kit

there a few other places to get this stuff online.
This kit has enough chemicals for one bear hide.

This is the kit I used. Instructions are pretty straight forward. The chemicals are safe and enviro friendly. The leather came out white and soft. If you can do the basics yourself ie. turn lips, nose, feet, rough flesh, the rest is pie. PM me if you want more info. Its a great project to do on your own. Nothing better then doing it all yourself. Just like the good old days.

Just finished this last week.

It's hard to tell by the pic but it looks like you thinned it right down to the hair follicles.
Is it gonna be ok like that and keep it's hair?

In some spots it is down to the follicle. This is fine and I have 0 hair slippage. You can pull as hard as you want on the hair and nothing comes out. Most tanneries thin the entire hide down to the hair follicles, it is a way to make the hide very soft without having to spend much time breaking the hide. As long as you have properly salted and dried the hide, you won't have a problem with any slippage.

One tip for for anyone doing this.... Don't worry about having a perfect fleshing job at the start. Just get the meat and large chunks of fat off at first. After the hide has been in the pickle for 3 days, all the leftover flesh and membrane comes off easy. If I knew this at the start, it would have saved me a lot of time and a few holes I put in the hide.
