Hey All, planning a northern moose hunt (Atlin area) and trying to figure out the best plan for caring for meat. The trip is planned for Aug 20-30th so am anticipating that outside hanging and storage for 10 days will not be possible given temperatures (although we might luck out).

We have 2 freezers, a large cooler box and a generator or two - however, I understand there is also no longer a meat cutter in Atlin. We had been planning on having it processed and simply freezing it on-site.

We've narrowed down to a couple of options:

1. Quarter/debone meat and freeze (although this will impact later processing down south???)
2. Process meat on site (requires cutting table, wrappers, grinder, etc)
3. Take meat to Whitehorse and have it processed, frozen and stored for pick up on way back.

Has anyone used a cutter/storage site in Whitehorse? Any considerations for transportation of meat into Yukon for storage & processing for a week (permits, etc) (will be checking with CO's on both sides of border, just wondering if anyone has done this before and/or has contacts)?

Any other options?

Thanks for any help.

moose rut is sept 10-20 in atlin, temps are a bit better then as well. I know its not what your lookin for, but we've hung our game for 10 days during that time, maybe you'll get lucky and have cooler temps, although they are calling for a hot summer into october.

Freezing and dealing with later shouldn't be a problem...we have brought frozen deer home on many occassions without any loss of quality to the meat. IMO

Is your cooler box big enough to hang a quartered or deboned moose as well as some ice? If so keep ice blocks in your freezer, quarter your moose, chill it in the freezer then move it and ice to the cooler and replenish the ice when needed.

flat deck trailer, generator, and a freezer, that would be my plan

Refer. unit in a cargo trailer with dedicated cool room, but that can get expensive. Not a bad investment if future trips are planned, but for a one-shot deal the other suggestions by others are the best bet.

build a cooler unit with a window shacker ac and a coolbot will be just like a meat locker?

a warm freezer will never freeze if filled with warm meat.the freezer will die seen it happen more than once.
