I want a knife for general use, but not skinning, etc.

It has to be a folder, 3.5 in to 5 in blade, under $100, no weird blade shapes (like the Be Wharned, etc).

I will carry this knife everywhere, keep that in mind.

Thanks,

Bob.

Cheep, works good, but ugly. I've had it for over 15 years and has skinned more than 20 moose, 2 passes on both sides with a point file and I'm good to go. File and knife still under $20 at the Northern Hardware in PG.

For not much cash, a good quality folder is the Buck Vantage- Pro Model. Nice tough, compact design. S30V steel w/ BOS heat treat and G10 handle scales. With a little searching it can be found for ~$50. Not sure if they still carry them, but, I bought a few from BassPro.

I have a few Carson CRKT M21s. Mine are all serrated, because I work in rigging and boats, so i need a good rope-cutter. My 3"blade cut a 2" polysteel in four strokes, saving the day! (yay Carson!)
You can get straight-edge too. Look online at eBay and the like. About $40-60, depending on size.

Spyderco knives are cheapish and they have a wide range of folding knives, i own a couple they are good for all purpose use.

x2 on Spyderco folder - under $100 prefer the Manix 2 ($85 plus tax) partial serrate. Good 154CM steel, good grip / G10 scales with jimping on thumb ramp and bolster, side lock. Once started using it sold a couple other knives.

If want something little larger & cheaper (simple liner lock, 8Cr13MoV steel, G10 scales) then Resilience is 4.25" for $45 (unavailable in partial serrate). In the same line is the Tenacious (same size as Manix) for $40 and it is also available in partial serrate.

Had to contact customer service once, personalized reply next day.

Buck 110. I've used one for close to 30 years now and can't count the number of game animals it's cleaned/skinned plus other chores I've done with it. They hold an edge, even with the blade worn down as much as mine is from sharpening. Buy it from Crappy Tire ( of all places ) and it will come with a good leather sheath.

Spend a tad bit more and have Ddog build you one! He built a custom drop point for my son a few years back and I still haven't had to sharpen it!! Worth every penny, and it will last longer than you will!! Moosin

buck 110 or gerber gator both 3.75" blade about 5" closed. buck is heavier, gerber has a superior handle imho. buck has leather sheath, gerber is heavy nylon. neither have one hand assist opening but with practice can be opened one handed. both come in around 50-60 $$$$

I bought a Kershaw Blur and I am really happy with it. Its a great knife.

The other one I was considering was the Kershaw clash, it was really similar and only $30. Or my last EDC was the Byrd Cara Cara, and it was good too. Stood up to lots of use and held an edge really well.

I know the original poster asked about folding knives but for others reading this thread I really like my Buck 102 Woodsman model 4 " blade, 2.5 oz, it's a great all purpose hunting knife. I also use a Buck 477 caping knife with a gut hook 3.5" blade and even lighter it's a great knife too.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Kershaw Junkyard Dog or Zero Tolerance, or a Surefire Edge, or a MOD Crucible.

Not a knife for skinning, whittling, etc.

I should have been more clear. :)

Yes was pretty ambiguous how you stated it has to be a folder and not a skinner :) Half the fun in these threads is to see the go sideways - two more pages and you would be buying an axe because more useful than fixed blades...

Consider the Emerson A100 or Spyderco Caly 3.5 as well if looking in that part of the $100 price range (or a little above as with ZT). Personally do not care for recurve and blade proportion of the ZT, prefer old school design of A100 (same 154CM as Manix 2) and ergonomics VG10 of Caly (have the A100 & Caly 3 both in partial serrate).

Hope you're hoping to handle them before you buy - is a significant difference in the feel of the scales between manufacturers. Personally prefer G10 over plastics of Benchmade, SOG, Cold Steel (though do have a Titanium Benchmade), or rough carbon fiber (Spyderco Sage) over smooth carbon fiber.

In keeping with this thread, you should get a .300 WSM.

The Kershaws that are US made are very good quality. I think they have some Chinese ones that are cheap and crappy.

I know they are the very bottom end, but for a daily carry even in elastic waist shorts I use the Crappy tire folding, locking, razor knives that come with a pack of new blades for $10. Always sharp, doesn't raise eye brows even if worn on the front of your Carhart bibs (yes, I wear them everywhere but church), and if you lose it no big deal. I have about half a dozen around at any one time. I've skinned and deboned 2 bears with them also.

Find yourself a Buck Strider Tarani and you've got a solid knife that falls well within the parameters you stated. I carry mine nearly everyday, it's a tank of a knife that takes and keeps a good edge

If you're looking for someone to tell you what knife to buy and carry you need more than that type of advice. I'd suggest that you should be looking for "professional" advice.

Do your research. Look at all the ones that interest you. Then make up your own mind. After all - it's your knife.

I've carried a crkt m16 03z for two years. I sharpen it regularly, but also use it a LOT. For $60 I wouldn't be too upset if I lost it, but I'd replace it with another of the same. I like the crkt locking mechanism too, requiring two separate mechanical movements to close it.

Ive carried a benchmade pika for nearly 5 years now . I use it at work , hunting fishing and everything else . It is one of the cheapest benchmades out there {$85} , and is still of higher quality than kershaw , gerber , cold steel and especially spiderco {although these are still excellent knives }.
