Hmmmmm just in from Soda Creek area...seen about 25 mule deer in a group..every last one of them was COMPLETELY covered in mud...

Not a little sprinkle of mud...but slathered in mud...completely...even the white rear ends...like someone literally applied 2"-3" of mud...and in some places some clumps of mud the size of baseballs...

They were only 20 feet in front of the vehicle and completely and well illuminated..I could hardly believe my eyes...

Now the question is..how?? and why???

Anyone ever encountered this before??:?

cheers

Yes I have seen this before ,I have seen the mule deer into a natural mud lick when the mud was very wet and the deer looked just as you explained it ,find this like and you have found a gold mine for hunting..

Maybe to fend off the ticks? Seen some animals that had hardly and hide left on them this spring.

I agree. But, if you've been watching TV lately, mud baths are the rage again.

My Dad told me they do this when there going from their winter coat to summer coat for hair removal,I thought maybe for ticks also.

IIRC Arnie covered himself in mud during the original Predator movie in order to hide from the Alien's heat seeking abilities. Maybe there's something around Soda Creek that we all need to be very afraid of?

I was out shed hunting in soda creek a little while ago and we got hammered by ticks, it was gross, never went back again. They were all over all of us.

Perhaps thats why?

Have watched documentaries showing sheep and goats on steep faces covered in mud while trying to get at minerals. I don't know if the Soda Creek area is within the heavily infested tick area. I do know the area north and south of Pavilion Lake is very bad.

Bugs and Ticks was my first thought too. Although the point about winter hair removal has some merit as well. Interesting sight to see.

I,m pretty sure what you saw was a large group of does returning from the spa, still enjoying their Swedish mud bath. All the women love the spas.

Haha, love the comments on this one guys. Let the imagination stir!
Its just irritated skin. The mud cools the skin down and stops the itching, whether it be from insects or from winter coats shedding!

Any mudslides in the area? Maybe they took a tumble down an exceptionally muddy slope?

hmmm pretty hard to see many deer with sirens and lights all going...lol this was the only group of deer I got a good look at because of going over the train tracks I had slowed down..so I got a really close good look @ all the deer in this group...like I said 100% all slathered in mud...

Other deer I seen on the highway ..were running and I was going too fast to see "ticks" but all the others had the white rump patches and looked clear of any mud at all....

Hmmmm... sounds like irregular bathing techniques ! no question about it. they have been displaced from thier traditional bathing habitat, by the global warmings.

I thought the ticks have dropped off already. If the deer had that many ticks on them over winter I would think it would have done the deer in.

I'm thinking they got caught in a mudslide. If they rolled in mud because of ticks or other insects, surely somebody on here would have seen it before.

Probably a muddy area to cross after your vehicle scared them to cross it, they thought omg there's another idiot driver. lol.

Seen a show years ago about Caribou up north some where the Black Flies were so thick some of the Caribou were running around blind and jumping off cliff's to get away from the little black *******s!!! So, my guess is they were getting eatten alive by Bugs and rolling in the mud was the only protection they could come up with!

I dunno, but the little woman decided to try a mud pack on her face a few years ago to improve her facial tone, etc. It worked like a damn until they took the mud off.

Nope your all wrong! What you have fallen upon is a group of deer special forces doing covert reckon on all the hunter activities in the area. Your lucky that you got out of there with your lives, many are not so lucky!!!!

My labrador loves to roll around in mud, the more stinky the better. Clearly what you saw were hybrid mule deer/labrador retriever.
