Well my buddy and I went out on Sunday morning to try and find our first grizzlys. Picked him up at 5:00am in Horsefly, and headed on out to our region to have a little look.
After raining all day on Saturday it was supposed to be a very warm Sun, highs of 20-21C. We drove to a spot that my buddy had been in a couple of days before and had seen some good bear sign. Got out of the truck around 6:50am, and started to walk into a 2 year old cutblock. There was a lot a scat and tracks on the road, in and around the puddles. You could definately see that the bears were feeding on clover and new grasses.
We walked in about a km in, stopping and glassing, no bears just deer. When we were about 40 yards from the end of the road Mother Nature and (Tim Hortons coffee) hit myself real hard. Told my buddy to continue on without me, ( I could pretty much see the edge of the cutblock and road end). Now it gets $hitty, here I am, doing what I need to do, (just turned off the video) when I here 1 shot, then another, and then a Holly F#$K!!! Well now I am scrambling, trying to get my pants up and my gear back on. As I go running up the little hill to the end, I see my buddy sitting on a stump SHAKING!!! Saying very excitedly that he just shot his Grizzly.
Well here's how it happened.
He goes walking up the little hill after leaving me, and is mostly looking to his left. Well, when he gets to the little landing and looks around to his right, 7 yards away standing behind a mound of dirt is a very nice silvertip. It huffs at him and decides to run. (My buddy is 6'3 260lbs) Smart choice (for Morley) Grizz stops about 40 yards away for a look ,and gets hit in the front shoulder by 180 gr tsx 300 short mag. Second shot goes through engine room. Beautiful!!!!
Walk back to get truck and cameras. Who thought grizzly hunting was this easy. Bear was 6 ft boar. Not bad for your first. Now we just need to find mine......
Sorry about the pics. Not sure how to do them.
