I have a boot on either side for my 22 and what ever rifle I take out. I can also put one across the rack on the buck horn type racks. but only take them out of the boots for up there when it is decent out or the 22 sits there when lots of grouse are around. I had a friend who mounted two of these from the front rack thinking that it would be handier if something came out in front of him to stop and pull the gun straight out towards him, but I thought it would dig in in holes and hills, sure enough he tore the first one off on a deep cross ditch.

i prefer a soft case on the front with moose utility rifle mounts .. i can get my rifle out faster and and makes less noise .
