Starts NOW ! quick note for the handfull of b tail nutz on here that want to learn and nail a big one this fall. NOW is the time to start and I have already.
I already know where to expect to find sheds and who's.As well , new racks will show from elusive bucks that are never seen but cant hide their sheds! It always helps the encouragement to see an 'unknowns' headgear layin there where you hunt non stop!( and make note of the beds near by for this late fall).
The deer are really starting to surge up here with does heading back to summer range first followed by the boys.(proven by our clubs capturing and collaring).
Right now the leaves and underbrush are still basically bare and you can see for a ways.Trails and old rubs will really stand out right now as well sheds . Its a great time to pre scout those hangouts , easily see piles of fresh droppings where mature deer wintered ( wich is usually where they rut)and find out MORE KNOWLEGE !!!!....anyway , just a quick note of encouragement.
Also , hopefully as many guys as possible will bring along a video cam this year and post up as much footage as possible during the fall hunt , will make for an epic b tail thread in the fall!!!!...any footage is great , doesnt have to be hammer bucks;-). Start saving a few $ now for that cam if you dont have one , as well a trail cam, dont wait till 'next year'....make this fall epic!!

The camera I used last fall is a Sony Handycam , new last yr.'HDR-CX110' 3.1 mega pixels.
It seems to do a great job but I actually liked the Panasonic I was using the couple seasons before that , it seemed to have a way better 'steady shot' built into it than the Sony. Anyone wants it its in Gilmores field somewhere , lost while filming 'Jr'. getting wacked.
Best to hang it off your neck or keep in a zippered jacket pocket. I carry a range finder in my left jacket pocket , cam on my right. While guiding I keep my tripod adapter on my cam , but NEVER get a chance to use a tripod on blacktails as your 'lucky ' to just get the damned cam out for one , let alone set up a tripod!
I sure hope more guys pack a cam this fall , just think of the footage that will be on a b tail thread , will be like going on dozens of hunts in one week!!

Oh man! Can't wait for the action to start. Spent a number of days this week doing some hiking and checking out some new areas. Found a couple of my first BT sheds ever, one being LARGE. Definately got me excited! Will post pictures later of the sheds.

A question for those that know more about finding sheds, are there any particular areas one should be looking for them. It appears that where the deer are wintering is the place to look, but what should one be looking for as a Wintering ground? THis might be way to general of a question??

You should hear the noise a $700 Panasonic video camera makes going through a New Holland mower conditioner!! Much louder than a $300 one.

I also use a Panasonic, its an HDC-SD10. For the price its the best camera I have used. I think Future Shop has these cameras on clearance right now for about $350. I bought mine on sale there 2 years ago for $550 so it's a pretty good deal if they have any left

Try the same place you find them rutting in the fall. High bluffs ,southern faceing seems hot...but sometimes you find em in cold dark places the sun never see's.
These deer are all over , islands, farm fields and mountains. Best to look hard wherever your spot may be.Right now is a great time due to being able to see the numerous piles of droppings from the winter very easily with no or little undergrowth yet.Once you start seeing piles of fresh and semi fresh droppings , really start scanning for bone on the ground!
Locally , the majority of our deer migrate , but there is also a good population that doesnt! Anyone familiar with Whistler kinows how much snow we get here. I have found numerous sheds WAY above the height of the chairlift base. Always on a south facing steep rocky bluff with big timber. The snow knocks off ample feed all winter from the timber.

So here's the deer im after this year, love to find his sheds!
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/hunting2010-Novcampics_013_Large_.jpg

This is the smaller shed found near one of our better areas.
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/081_Large_.JPG

And this is large shed found scouting a new area. Real tough to show the significant size and mass of this shed in a picture like this.

Going back to look for the match and explore further.

I'm hoping this young buck packs on enough to prime out this fall,
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/trailcam2010mrB098.jpg
Was after this old fart for a while now , never saw him with my eyes but
KNEW where and when to find his tracks for a few years...doesnt get more frustrating.By the looks of his baseball bat bases and stubby points he's about 'done' now...probably be a massive 'pincher 3' this year if he makes it through this nasty spring.

Then of course theres always gonna be new ones in new spots to!:-D

More Bt hunters must have some trail cam pics and shed finds since the fall season. Gotta post them up and get us pumped for fall. Gotta go check cams tomo and prolly move a couple around. The cam will be with me in the fall. Sometimes you need some motivation after following monster BT tracks for days on end without a glimpse
