Anyone from this site ever tried these knives out? The disposable blade idea could be a hot one for those that just hate sharpening knives, and a reasonable price to boot!!

These knives rock, but are incredibly sharp and dangerous! It takes me about 3 blades to go through a deer, they do not take prying or heavy cutting pressure very well, but they are excellent for skinning. The one you've pictured takes the smaller blades (face/ears) and the larger 60XT blades as well.

They are great knives. just finished fleshing my old mans bear hide with one last night. I would recommend getting the one with the orange handle as they are pretty small and a dark handle could dissapear pretty fast when placed on the ground.

I have used them for 3 years now, jumped on the band wagon right when they came out ! Every hunter should own one or three !! I caped out 5 deer heads in November last fall and they are sweet !

The Piranta edge with orange handle is $49.99

This is the one I sell the best and use myself, orange handle is a must as these are hard to find if you set them in the grass.

I always sell the 100pc of blades that way your good for a long time and you dont need to be cheap with the blade's. The holster is handy, the knife has the pocket hook but then when you pack extra blades there so small its nice to just keep everything contained.

Piranta Edge $49.99
12pc blades $9.99
100pc blades $49.99
Holster $9.99

I have been using the Piranta Edge for three years as well. Last year I left it behind after dealing with my bear. I hiked out my bear and got home and realized I left it behind. I liked the knife so much I hiked back in the next day and found it and with out that orange handle that would have been impossible LOL!

The #60xt autopsy blades works the best for me. They are the thickest blade, and won't break as easy if you end up twisting it. You can pick up a box of 100 blades off of ebay for $34can shipped.

I have this one and I love it. Don't order it from Havalon on line though cuz the UPS bills sucks! Order it from one of the nice B.C. sales folks

And yes, definitely buy the 100 pack of blades.... in fact, I think I need to get some coming. I don't have too many left.

Have used one for about 6 years, used it for skinning elk, moose, bear, dear. First got it when working as a guide for capping works great for that, (have to be careful as sometimes too sharp). Tried it for skinning too, works well just don't cut hair with it as it slices it and makes a mess. Tried to take quarters off with it once just for grins, and worked okay just had to be careful not to bend the blade at all or it might break off inside...
Also have used a variety of blades, but like the big ones the best.

Love the knives though so light and always sharp.

I ordered mine through mountain man sports before Powder Keg had theirs. I have also seen them at Back Country sports in Fort St. John.

Great knife. As they take scapel blades you can also buy blades at any medical supply shop. I bought the orange handled one as I have spent more then a few minites looking for my old knives when I put them on the ground when skinning or gutting an animal.

I just used mine with the 60xt blades on my color phase black bear last weekend. I liked it but I found I had more control with my regular hunting knife. I liked the havalon when I got around the paws, for the rest of skinning I have found my bigger knife is quicker. The havalon was way too small when I used it on last years elk as a regular skinner, I think its good to work with two knives.

Just picked one up in Wenatchee. Hopefully I will deflower it this season. Last year I asked about them and the shop didn't even know what I was talking about. Then they ordered a bunch and sold out the first order and most of the second. They were out of spare blades last week and had ordered more knives and blades. The feedback they were getting from their customers was that the knives were awesome.

Very sharp, dont be using them in a hurry as the blade snaps real easy, snapped 3 blades tryin to skin a moose, then gave up. However, its great for caping.

Got a bolt from Vantage point a couple of months ago. As said fast on the delivery. Tried out the 60A blades, the thicker ones and they are better but still broke 3 on my elk. Maybe got to ease up a little...

I have one, and agree that the blade snaps easily if not used properly. I would recommend keeping a leatherman on you for blade changes, as once your knife and hands get bloody and wet, it's a recipe for disaster trying to change out blades.

Also I found that the #22XT blades are great for gutting and skinning because they have a blunt tip that helps prevent accidental punctures and poke throughs. It's also 50% thicker then standard.

OK, I know I'm going to need my flame suit for this, but... I don't get the point of this type of knife.

I've gutted and skinned 4 deer (assisted on 2 of them, actually) and a bunch of hare this year with my knife and all it ever needs is a couple of strokes through my little ceramic sharpener.

Also, I'm not really sure why everyone seems to think skinning is so difficult and that you need a scalpel to do it. I find it to be very easy. Hell, usually it is just a matter of pulling the skin and lightly running the knife along the seam. It comes right off, even when my knife is only half-assed sharp.

So, what's the obsession with these knives? The ongoing cost of replacement blades, the fragility of the blades, etc. seem to far outweigh the benefits.

i completely agree with you for me i did a whole moose with a cheap $50 knife and a $15 dollar pocket sharpener. Skinning it was not difficult at all only ran the blade through the sharpener twice. No replacing the blades when my hands were all bloody. I can only imagine cutting myself replacing a blade when its bloody as well as my hands. then you have to dispose of the blades after. Fixed blade knives for me as well.

The Havalon is good, and so is the Outdoor Edge Razor Lite....I only broke a blade on the Havalon once and have done a dozen animals since with no issues. For tougher cutting I use the outdoor edge, my fixed blade knives are on my belt and get a lot of use around camp.

Valid points. I never really saw the benefit, but eventually also bought one.

One of the reasons is that it's a fad. It's a cool new thing to have.
Also, Price. It's under $60 with a whole bunch of blades you never have to worry about sharpening. it's a pretty attractive combination.

My reason was that I wanted to prolong the edge on my main knife. As such, i bought the Havalon to use When i have to cut a lot of hair, or work against the bone. For example, skinning the head and working up around the base of the antlers. No matter how hard i try i always dull my knife against the bone there trying to get every bit of flesh/skin off. With a Havalon i don't have to worry at all. Just throw that blade out and i'm good to go.

Purchased a havalon this fall and gutted, quartered and skinned a moose using the same blade. The only limitation is the length of the blade. Works real well on cutting through the thick skin on a moose.

i also helped a friend butcher 7 pigs. One blade was all I needed.

I do not own one and never seen one used in person. I have looked at them in the store. When hunting I have 1 knife on me and 1 in my pack, and a small sharpener.

-I dont like the idea of relying on replacement blades.
-I don't like the idea of breaking one off inside (can this happen) as mentioned earlier they look very light duty
-I don't like the idea of now having to carry a few dull blades out of the bush after a job (do you carry them in another container-- how many guys pitch them in the bush??!!)
-I do not like fixed blades (bad experiences with cheap ones not locking)
-some models look very bulky
- for camp work etc you still need to carry a heavier knife anyways

I could be totally off the mark with my opinion but I didn't want to waist money on the knife and a pack of blades to find out. I'll stick with my plane old fixed blades for now

one blade lasts a heck of a long time, if you are bringing a few dull ones out after one or even two animals you did it wrong. We use the Havalon from start to finish, does s great job breaking quarters down.

Firebird, Put the used Havalon blade in the foil packet the new blade came out of. Stick it in the sheath that holds the knife and spare blades. Resharpen it when you get home on your Chef's Choice 120 diamond wheels sharpener if you like or dispose of it in metal recycle. Great knives but don't pry with them.

Though it is not a Havalon, I use the Outdoor Edge Razor Lite EDC (very similar). I was pretty skeptical on replaceable blades at first but I am a HUGE believer in them now. The blades come freaking sharp out the package with all the replaceable blades individually vacuum sealed and with a blade guard. I took it out for a week long hunt on Texada in September. One blade got through 4 bucks and it is still sharp. I am sure the Havalon are in similar standing but I am a true believer in the replaceable blades.

LOL,

Just finished taking lower legs off my second deer in two weeks with my trusty havalon. Maybe you need a lesson on how to do it, not really a 'pry' job unless you don't know what you are doing.

I also popped the head off both bucks and all with the same blade.

Yeah I haven't found a need to pry legs apart with a blade either.

I carried my old fixed blade Schrade as well as the havalon, and a multi tool.
Gutted and skinned out a deer as a how to lesson for the guy who shot it (his first Deer, and the first one he's ever been involved with.)
Other than my doofus brother losing his grip on a leg, and grabbing at it and slicing himself on the knife I was holding, it was an overall rewarding experience. I'm sold on it.

My only complaint was that it seemed to get gummed up with fat at one point and wasn't cutting very effectively. Wiped it off and it was good again.

My take on these knives:
i bought one for long hikes for deboneing deer , I have the havalon peronta bolt slightly larger handle than the peronta . Although I have not had the chance to debone yet I have field dressed and skinned one blacktail with it and the one blade is still good . In my opinion I find it too sharp for skinning every nick turns into a hole in the hide , maybe just need to get used to it but as far as field dressing removing bladder legs ect this thing is great and a very handy tool for your pack .
