Well as some of you may have seenI have been posting pics and paragraphs of my region 8 bear hunting adventures... Tonight was the night! I just got in from an amazing hunt! The big boar I have wanted finally gave me an opportunity. After ranging him I put one excellent shot through his front shoulders and away he rolled down even closer to the road! I will be heading out early tomorow to go grab him out of the alders because tonight it was getting a little dark and I decided for safety wise to hold off until the morning to go up and get him. I had 2 people spotting for me and so it should be a quick and nice recovery...
Here are some pics before the shot was fired of the big boar.

solid bear! how far was the shot?

I practice quite a bit at all distances and have my gun fine tuned for 200 yards at 0". I am shooting a 7mm Rem Mag with Hornady bullets....
The shot I made after ranging the bear was just over 400 yards( I aimed with my 325 pin on his back to compensate for the uphill steep angle) It hit him hard in the front shoulders and he went a couple yards before dropping and rolling into the alders. He was dead very quickly...wish I had it on video it was incredible!

Well here you guys go. It was an old bear with worn out teeth (sorry for the gross pic of the teeth...I had nothing to clean them off with) The pictures arent really the greatest cause we had a heck of a time getting the bear around on the steep face and even keeping our selves from tumbling haha (The bear was only hanging by a couple roots that were out of the ground.) The pics do not show how steep it really is!
This is how we found him.

Thanks to everyone for enjoying this post...And yes it ended up being a big sexy sow haha. I am a little dissapointed it's not a boar but hey it's still an old bear and a fatty. I just skinned it out an will be doing a rug. It was a region 8 bear. I have not really measured the exact length or anything cause I have been to busy running around doing other things...But here is the bear skinned out.

Nothing wrong with tagging a big sow! Shit , I saw a sow brown bear I woulda shot in a second if it didnt have a cub last week!
Couple clues for the curious on calling the sex : big ears , narrow muzzle , no split down the forehead or scars on the face/muzzle.

Bear shooting distances? Depends...the way I hunt these bears is pretty basic. I drive up a fsr on one side of the valley then sit and glass from my truck and eat spits... I watch as the bears come out all over the othere side and feed next to waterfalls... we then pick the one we want and plan a stalk then drive to the other side of the valley and hike up the steep terrain to get into position. Because this area I hunt is almost straight up and down if the bear is high enough you can shoot from the fsr up at them like I did on my bear (400+). We also have shot them on the road in this spot which is a real treat not having to pack them out too far haha. If the stalk goes well we are able to make easy shots from 250 or less. We had a beautiful boar in our sights at 55 yards a couple weeks ago after a long stalk but I decided not to pull the trigger... It's a neat area not for the lazy and it gives a guy an opportunity shooting from any range.

The elevation is pretty low. There's just a tiny bit of snow up on top...

Hey, deeks, what are you using for loads? curious 'cause I'm working up a load for my .300

I am shooting the Hornady SST 154 Grain interlocks... They seem to be doing the job just fine.

Hard to say unless you take the skull to a biologist my guess is 12 years old .

14yrs plus my guess. We aged them in northern alberta for a few years, most were not starting to wear down there teeth until around 15 yrs old. We had some that were over 20, with very little for teeth left. Most of the big boars with long sharp teeth were 10 to 15 yrs old.

I've killed 2 grizz with a .30-06 and 200gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. Worked fantastically! They also do the job an everything else...elk, deer, coyotes, etc.

So did you put it on your back and crawl around the house?
I did that to my dog when i pulled my rug out of the box....the dog got over it, but the cat was gone for a couple of days.....ha ha ha.

Nice heavy coat, nice colour.

Sorry for not posting measurements....The bear went around the 6' mark the way that I measured it(laying it on the ground and measuring tip of tail to nose not stretching) and as for the skull I never got it scored.
