that is what they are "radio channel frequency codes", many forestry and O&G roads use individual channels( frequencies)
if your radio is not (programed) for use in a particular area, it is useless to you,

the radio I use in North East BC and Alberta is programed for about 90 different channels,

Your FRS, is not in same band as the Forest Service Road Frequencies.
They are usually in the 151.000 mhz range. VHF band,.. Your FRS is the UHF band, totally separate so no sorry you cant match up the Forest Service Roads.

yes, depending on the age, model, condition of the radio
when my radio needs more channels or upgrading I drop it off at a Communications Service Dealer, have it cleaned up,calibrated, channels added and deleted, usually costs me $100 plus depending how long they spend on it,

I just drop the radio on the counter and point out on the map what area and the company names working in that zone and tell the "tech" , make it work,,, and they do,,,and I pay ! lol

If you're heading out to an area away from your home base, one option is to just rent a radio from the the local communications shop, rather than get your radio programmed for the local frequencies.

get a programable radio and just put them in yourself. all the frequencies are on industry canada

Can anyone recommend communications dealers in the mid-island area? I can use Google and Canpages just fine but personal recommendation is always preferred.

Also, any tips or recommendations on the make/model of radio to buy? I'd prefer handheld but I'm interested in knowing where the logging trucks are so I don't end up as a hood ornament so vehicle mount is fine too. I'm OK with doing my own programming as I'm tech-savvy but not much idea where or what to start with.

EDIT:
Just seen one of the other threads that speaks highly of the ICOM IC-2200H so I'll look at those but recommendations for any others are welcome. Also, now appreciating the power advantage of a vehicle mount over a handheld so looks like that is the way I'll go.

Cercom (sp?) electronics in Nanaimo has a pile of communication products, and they are good to deal with. I rent a sat phone from them when needed.

if all you want is to listen you can get a scanner very cheaply and they are programable. some of them skip certain frequencies so look at the specs to make sure it cover the freqs you want.

Yes, I guess that at the moment all I want to do is listen but that is probably because I don't yet understand why I would want to transmit.

@Carl - I'll go and check out Cercom Electronics - they aren't far from me. Thanks for the tip.
