So im done guiding sometime around the 1st of October, and I will have about 10 days to kill until I meet some family in Fort Nelson for elk hunting, Im planning on hiking in and looking for a stone. I know in the Yukon at that time its a bit iffy, it can be nice or it can dump snow, Muncho Lake/racing river area, should I expect snow say Oct 2-10?

one of the guides I know..his last hunt is the end of the season..snow pushes the rams around and down..and tracks show up well ijn the snow..its a $$$$$$ hunt..5 employees for 1 hunter..that hunt is along the Yukon Border Swan lake outfitters...so I do know it is done.... and successfully..looking at his photo album..

My favorite time to hunt them. Like proguide stated the weather can go either way. But I have killed a few really good rams in October and the capes are second to non. Look for the ewe's. Rams probably wont be right with them yet(but have a look anyways) but they will be starting to stage on the near by areas.
Lots of times the rams will pull out of the ugly rough stuff through October and be closer to the rutting and wintering areas.
In 2009 in the Toad River area it was -22C on Oct. 11 when I trailed horses out so be prepared for the chance of cold weather.

Good to know, Thanks SG. Only thing im worried about is getting trapped with a couple feet of snow

Last year in the Tat we got weathered out..fog wind and snow,.....however it just as easily could have been phenominally successful with different weather..ya never know...staying "inland" further from the coast will make for less radical changes...

One of the biggest bonuses is that chance of snow...rather than hurt...a certain amount makes it easier to eliminate areas void of tracks....trails and tracks show up instantly and one can follow them really rapidly getting direction of travell etc..

Couple years ago I stopped..started glassing LOOKING for tracks..in minutes was able to find tracks..and minutes later sheep..and w/i 30 minutes rams...nothing worth shooting however it did have its advantages... and as been stated the capes are primo....

cheers

This is from the area you mentioned Oct 2 2010 , the year before there was about a foot of snow in the same spot on the same date.http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/Alaska_hi_way_2010_009.jpg (javascript:;)

I am curious if charters will still fly out of Dease at that time of year, anyone know?

Or at what time the lakes around dease start to freeze up?

I'm going to guess that will be dependant upon the weather and the size of the lake. Bigger lake, later freeze over.

if you go in october, i would suggest buying a set of crampons....they have ones now around $120 that fit onto normal boots.....really good to have if you use them with caution. The steep grassy sideslopes can become life-threatenning when frozen
