Gate - Its the Barren Ground herds that are in trouble. The Mountain Caribou herds in the Mackenzie Mnt. are doing well. Last I heard anyway which was last fall. Non of our seasons have been changed.

Thanks. It was incredibly lucky it stopped where it did. We were hoping to knock it down in the ledges but that didn't work! As soon as he got hit he ran over to the edge of the cliff and went down and started rolling.

That's alot of bow hunts! I've never got the opportunity to bowhunt sheep. Must be a fantastic challenge. It changes the game.

Thanks Chris, I'm using a Sony Handycam with 60x. Its nice and small for backpacking but I really don't like the image quality. Unfortunately if you want HD you have to drop the zoom which sucks for sheep hunting. I'm using Windows Moviemaker for editing. I think there's definitely better programs out there, I'd like to try editing on a Mac. One thing I was looking for was a free program to download movie music for. Any ideas?

He got to about 10 yards. Never had that happen before. He was all by himself tucked away in an ugly basin. I think he was just lonely, or maybe he thought I was a ewe.

The day 29 thing was because he'd been there twice before, which is unheard of for us. Once in 2008 he had really bad weather and ended up being flown out early because they were worried about getting stuck, his second hunt they just had a really tough go. They saw lots of rams but nothing old. It put alot of pressure on me to take out the guy with the curse for the first hunt of the year! I was pretty releived to knock down a ram.

That's one thing about ARRO guides, they are determined to kill old rams, good for them! It is not easy to walk away from 39" eight year-olds!

The age thing is a complicated issue. We/they put alot of emphasis on taking old rams. Trying to take rams that have had they're chance to participate in the ruts and have a low probability of making it through the winter. Its good for the population and its good for trophy quality. In 20 years the average age has never been under 10 yrs old. The last 2 years its been 11 yrs. Clients are not denied good young rams but most come up understanding that if we find a good young ram early in the hunt we're probably going to pass him up and keep looking. Sheep tend to stay in a certain area and you can always come back and get him if you need to (not so easy to do in an area with lots of hunting pressure). Its a judgement call on the part of the guide and it takes some experience and confidence to make that call. It took me a couple of seasons to get the hang of it.
You're right though, its really tough to walk away from a big 8 yr old ram! 99% of the hunters are very understanding and respectful of those values.

I've got a bunch more video that I'll put up but its going to take me some time to get it put together.
