either one for moose...
with the same motor you can always do a 2;1 if you go with the smaller winch (faster line speed) and need more grunt.
or if you need a long reach, you can always remove the cable, use (200ft) or whatever length rope, and wrap the drum 8 times or so, and just tail the loose end as it pulls for you, coiling the loose end at your feet as you go..

biggest problem your going to have is overheating. (5.5 0r 9.3 fpm is really slow and your going to be winching for a while i bet!

are you mounting on an atv?
what brand are these winches?? how much are they?

hmm superwinch at 300 bucks....?

i have to say that i think for the $ and usage that a used winch would be better for you. although perhaps if its going on an atv than fullsize ones may be too big/ draw too much

duty cycle? Most recovery type winches have a low duty cycle, so check that out. also keep in mind that the winch retrieve speed is usually rated with a full drum, and will decrease significantly with only a wrap or two.. so you will be working a little less but pulling far slower with all your line out.

well if its going on a tracker id say look for a warn M6000.
Its the same as a m8000 but with taller gears. you get a faster line speed but less pull.

or something like this:

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/pts/2271294490.html

I bet you could spool that 4ooolb winch with 150ft+ of 3/16" cable (which would be the ideal size for that load)

Im not a big fan of the compact winches, if you allready havent figured that out yet.

I second the idea of the M6000 winch. At least then if you get the Tracker stuck you can use it on that too, where as the 4500 lb and smaller ATV winches simply won't handle it. Also, the M6000 will have 100' (96' to be exact) of cable where as the ATV winches will only have 50'. You could probably downsize to 1/4' cable and still be ok for the weight of the Tracker, and you could probably sneak closer to 130' of cable onto the drum as well. LR

Pack some extra cable, a tree wrap and a snatch block.
This will almost double your pulling power provided you don't spread the legs
on the cables.
Another option is to buy a Lewis winch.
I own one of the first style gas operated winches and works like a hot dam.
It's calle an Olini.
I was going to upgrade to a Lewis, but naw, this one works too good.
Screw battery power.

you may want to look into a power saw winch. they are awesome and really portable might be a better option for hunting moose all u need is a strap to hook it to a tree or quad and you are in business. lots of river boaters carry them.
