Pre 64 Model 70 Featherweight Winchester. Drive a classic.

Good choice, these are not hard to find and can be bought for around a grand and then doneup with a synthetic handle and so forth. I have a minty one I found in Nanaimo 20 years ago, Rimrock stock by Nobby Uno, Leupy, QRS and receiver sight. This will shoot under .5" at 100 M, I have not shot it in years, but, they are one fine rifle and much better than almost anything made today.

Another real gem is the Brno ZG-47 in .30-06, these run from roughly $800.00 to maybe $1250.00 for a real cherry example and shoot like target rifles. They can be re-stocked with any synthetic suited for the Mauser 98 or FN actions and are probably my favourite of all rifles ever made, this would be a real score.

Since you know what calibre you want the next step is get to a sports shop and shoulder as many guns(models) as you can and see which one fits you the best, which one feels most comfortable when you bring it up to your shoulder, then decide if you want a floorplate or a clip or a blind magazine, this may eliminate a few models, stainless or blued,do you prefer a 2 or 3 position safety ????

Thing I must have in a rifle, stainless synthetic, floorplate no clips, two pos safety, and I also like a cheekpiece on my stock,
I prefer Weatherby Mark V actions or Remington 700 actions.

Are you buying new or used.

If buying new and keeping under $1000. I would go with the Stevens 200 ($400), order a Boyd stock ($100), and for a scope Vortex Diamond Back 3X9X40 ($230). You'll have enough left over to have it bedded and a Limb Saver recoil pad installed. I think you would be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Used you have lots of choices. Any wheres from $400 -$1000 (sometimes you get lucky and find a rifle for $200) depending on the rifle and scope combo, or just the rifle. Go to the gun store and just try the feel of the different rifles. We are all built different and firearms fit us differently. For me I can pick up most Rugers and have them fit like a glove.

Good luck in your search.

I picked up a Ruger 77 Hawkeye all weather in 243 in December from Italian in Van. The stainless/black synthetic is a beautiful combo and the stainless is not shiny which I like. Picked it up as a combo with a Leopold scope for $800. Smoking deal and it is a tack driver at the range. It seems to repel coyotes as I have not laid eyes on one since I got the rifle but it is fun to shoot and feels great in my hands. Ruger all the way for value.

Ruger!!!!

Its funny I bought my 30 06 hawkeye ss on a whim. I just really liked the way it felt and handled. Also really well built, chunky- didn't cheap out on manufacturing. I regretted that I didn't do a bunch of research and find the best this, the best that, has this feature, etc. Then after 2 years I have come full circle and laugh that I would buy the Ruger before everything else in its price range. I just bought an a bolt in 338 and it just feels like a tool to me. The ruger has something special. MHO

Another vote for the Remington 700. Works fine for me.
My hunting buddy used to have a Winchester 70, continual problems with it so his kids bought him a Remington 700 for his birthday. He's a lot happier now.
If on a real budget, you can't beat Savage tho'.
Probably the best advice on here was stated earlier - go to the gun store and try 'em all on for fit.

I would suggest the Husqvarna 1600 rifles from Sweden, now available from Tradex, one of the sponsors of CGN. These are a light and VERY accurate rifle and very nicely finished, they are superior to anything now being offered from the major makers. You can get a really nice example for about $500.00 and they make about the best production "mountain rifles" ever plus fine custom rigs can be built from the basic barreled action.

I had three of these and still have two, the latest a 8mm Mauser that a buddy traded me for an older B&L scope I had some of; it is being custom-tuned at Martini's by Chris, at present and will be a neat rifle for Texada and V.I. Blacktails.

When, I was a beginner, these were THE favoured rifle among the serious sheep and goat hunters I knew in the Kootenays; I have one with a Wisner safety, both of mine have this, Brown kevlar stock and it shoots "bugholes" in 7x57. I have a Krieger light bbl, in .284 bore stashed for it and may someday convert it to another .280Rem., my favourite "standard" cartridge. This weighs a tad over 7 lbs. scoped and is a really nice rig for packing in the hills.

Another rifle to watch for is the FN sporters, made from 1946ish to the early '70s; there were two nice specimens in .30-06 at Italian Sports, recently and these are among the finest sporters ever made, anywhere, anytime and they can be had for about $600.00. You can restock in synthetic and you have one fine "all around" piece......far better than any current $1000.00+ new production. Parts and repairs are easy and they very seldom "break", can't beat it for a serious, using rifle.

You just use a Mauser inlet as the receiver is essentially a smallring 96-98 pattern. The tiny extra space around the ring and bridge and siderails is filled when bedding it and you can use steel Mauser bottom metal on these if you hate alloy as I do. You can buy a Micky Edge MK-X pattern stock blank and then have a good smith inlet and bed it precisely and you are hot to trot. Jan at Precision, Chris at Martini's and Mitch aka Brno 284 can all do superb work on this and Mitch paints with two-part epoxy paint like an artist.

I will just say that I have entrusted several of my most valuable and treasured rifles to these guys and have had total satisfaction, plus, they hunt and thus know WTF a "mountain rifle" should be.

In the same market as you and have done some looking and shouldering in the shops. Figured on a browning x-bolt stainless stalker, but none available in the 30-06 right now and all I heard was no eta and it could be about 4 months. I really liked the Tikka T3 but found the stock to be so light weight and hollow feeling. I'm a UTV guy and not going to pack for days (yet) type hunter so feel that a more solid stock would be more suitable. I then started looking some more and determined that there was a new offering from Weatherby on the way for May/June.
The Weatherby Vanguard S2 Stainless with a sub MOA guaranteed 3 shot group, new trigger, 3 stage safety in a US $600 MSRP. I read and reviewed some of the original Vanguard ratings and feel that this will be a great option for those looking for a value based rifle. The blue's is even less..

the best bang for your buck is going to be a savage 111, but, buy a good scope. you could buy an awesome rifle for $2000 that does the same job as a savage 111. look it up! i lightened the trigger a bit. i have a savage it cost me $399 plus tax with a scope.and it's very accurate. but i did buy a better scope than what came with it. come and shoot mine if you would like to see for yourself! it all depends on what you want and your budget! for the amount of bullets you put through it per year. you can buy lighter, nicer looking, etc for more money......but....!

so maybe let

http://www.weatherby.com/

know about how you changed their name? sorry, im not sure what you meant, i take it you are against what i said? I dont think the vanguard has poor balance, but that's my opinion. The ruger does use a mauser style extractor and is similar to the mauser? the howa action is closer to a mauser style/weatherby cross, again as far as i know. The ruger actions i have felt have all been pretty rough. I think its just a matter of preference, but the ruger is not a better action than the howa.. If it is, id like someone to explain it to me. Anyways, its not on the list so maybe its not a option.

All the rifles mentioned are good and all have there good and bad points. I have had most of them over the years. I find myself always retuning back to the Rugers. My preference being the older original tang safety M77. Currently I have 2 one being my 338-06 custom and my 257 Roberts and a Ruger M77/17 Mach 2. For years I recommended (and still do) the Rugers to new shooters/hunters, they can and are very accurate and tough rifles. Yes just like any other rifle (or car and truck) you will run into a bad one, but they seem to be far less then other manufactured rifles.

Get out there and find one you like and fits nice. Good luck in your search.
