Well we got one !! We had spent most of the evening driving hiking and glassing. Saw a few piles of fresh bear terd, and lots of sign that they were grazing on the grasses. We were heading into check the backside of an area that seemed to have lots of sign on the front side but no bears. As we headed up the back side we could see everything was really greening up, all of a sudded trailmasters little black lab starts to bark in her crate. We looked at each other and thought thats strange maybe she has to go pee. We had just had her out to do her business not to much earlier. As trailmaster stopped the truck it was almost simutanously bear !!!! Out we get. The bear was headed up a slope about 90 yards away. I loaded took aim and all i could see was bear bum :) As trailmaster got out of the truck the bear turned broadside and boom of went my 300 win mag 180 federal. The bear twirled sprinted about 40 or 50 yards and went down. After a little celebrating we let the pup out and quess what, she had no interest in peeing :) As we walked in on the bear she started doing that exact same bark, may have to borrow her for my new rig dog :)
Block and tackle is the only way to bear hunt hooke3d him up and down to the road in no time.

Special thanks to trailmaster and his little lab pup.

Here's my entry:

My regular partner is busy with life these days so it's been me and the dog searching for bears.

We started our day by driving around some early season spots for south island bears. Mainly concentrating on roads with alot of fresh grass and slashes that had greened up. After seeing alot of country and many piles of scat, no bears were seen as of early afternoon.

We decided to turn the truck off and walk some deactivated roads and see if we could surprise a bear. Again, saw alot of scat on roads that were covered in green grass, but no bears seen.

At around 5pm we decided to stick to lower elevations. I figured it was a good idea because I'd been seeing alot of bears near the highway, which is near sea level around Renfrew.

We found a nice 4km long road that paralleled slashes that were facing south east. Almost as soon as we started glassing I spotted movement about 40yards ahead. It was a black bears ass end and he was taking off. Me and the dog jump out of the truck and climb into the slash to get some elevation and a good vantage on the running bear. I spot him about 70 yards away heading up a rock bluff, up goes the rifle and the sight picture tells me it a young bear (big ears, lanky) with a nice coat. Too young I say, this one gets to walk.

I corral my riled up dog and we head back to the truck to move on. We go for about 20 mins and run into a dead end. Turn the truck around and head back. Just as I was about to call it for the day I see a little spur road that I didn't notice on the way in.... what the heck I say.... one more road.

We head up and instantly I see another bear heading straight up the block, sauntering to the tree line. Dog and me bail out and I get a rest, rifle up... sight picture tells me its another young bear. I keep the scope on him until he disappears behind a stump.... wait a few minutes.... he still hasn't emerged. I figure, no big deal.... he was another young fella.

Go to get up and head back to the truck and out of the corner of my eye I see something big and black about 100 yards to the right of the bear that just disappeared. Binocs go up this time and sure enough... BEAR. The body looks a little lanky but the head looks nice and large, ears are small and on the side of the head.

I decide to get a rest and watch for a while through the scope. Had a hard time judging body size, but I figure the head looks mature and after three chances I better not get much pickier. If the bear gives me a shot, I'm taking it.

Eventually the bear stands quartering to on a fallen tree. Adjust the scope, chamber a round, squeeze one off, watch the bear go down. I look back at my dog and he's sitting right behind me and he's ready to go check it out!

Found the bear stuck under a deadfall (they always do that) and was pleasantly surprised at the size. He was about 200 yards from the road and the terrain was bad enough that I couldn't roll him out by myself.

Because I was by myself, this was going to be a quarter and hike out situation. I unloaded my pack frame to make room in the main bag for the meat. First strip I took two of the quarters.... way to friggen heavy and awkward.... the remaining trips had one quarter in the bag and one in my arms... much better. After taking the qaurters, straps and head and collecting all of my gear back up again, it was about 4 trips back and forth.

Scale back home indicated that the quarters were about 45 lbs each.... and the head was a decent size. The hide on the other hand was rubbish.... he had been rubbing bad already.... oh well I'll do a skull mount!!

This was the first animal taken with my new remington with my first handloads of 30-06 springfield: 168 grain nosler ballistic tips.

This was my first bear of 2011.
I hunted hard looking for a mature, big and nice looking bear so I could get a rug made. I have hunted this area for 2 years now and have seen some monster bears and very early in the season. I glassed for hours over the days I spent looking for my bear and nothing I had hoped for was showing up. I had missed a chance at a monster the day before I shot this bear and was a little upset but knew I would eventually run into another big bear later on. On my way home from an evening hunt just before dark I spotted this bear way up a mountain feeding. I immediately got out of my truck and glassed it from about 1000 yards away and knew it was a bruiser... The next day I went up to my spot and began glassing, there wasn't too much moving around so I figured with an hour and a half of light left I would go look for the monster I saw the day before. To my suprise there it was! I ended up being able to drive up a fsr to within 400+ yards of the bear. After ranging it and watching it for 45 minutes getting a steady rest with my new T3 I let the 154 gr Hornady fly right through the front shoulder. With a loud smack I knew I had hit it and sure enough it began to tumble into the alders where I then found it the next morning. Overall I had turned down a number of fine bears and worked my but off hiking and waited patiently for the bear I ended up harvesting and it was worth it!

Not unless there is a dispute.

A photo with a tape measure by the skull is nice, though.

Nice Boar Down
Went for an evening drive tonight with my gf and came across this guy.
Found him eating on a patch of clover about 40 yards away. As the wind was in our favor, we watched him for about 2-3 minutes before I decided he was alone and big enough for what I wanted.
One shot from the 225G TTSX took out the heart and broke the opposite shoulder.
It is my first kill with my gf next to me. Super proud of her, she was right next to me as the shot dropped him. She was right in there up to her elbows helping gut . I think she had a bigger smile than I did.- She's now wanting to get her CORE
Took him to the taxidermist tonight and he was measured out at 6'3 with a big fat melon. Going to get him rugged, as the fur was thick with no rubs.

Well wednesday night me and my buddies went out for a short notice evening bear hunt just north of pg. Brought out my bow i had just gotten set up the day before, and did about an hour of practice shooting that day at my buddies place(thetackdriver) . So it was about 7 at night when we came up to km 5 of the road and there stood the elusive ursus americanus. Me and my buddies decided it was big enough so we put the stalk on this nice sized boar. We got to within approximately 17 yards within this bear. I was shaking like dog shitting razor blades when i brought the bow back to full draw and let the arrow fly. The boar was struck by my beman arrow and the rage broad head thumped the bear with about as much force as thetackdriver punching you in the face. The bear went down about 20 yards from where it was struck by the arrow from my bow. It was an extremely amazing experience something that I have never felt in my life. I am now hooked on bow hunting.

Typical BC bear hunt.
Saw this grizzly from the road and determined it was a boar, when it pee'd.
Took only a few minutes to get within bow range and put the first arrow through both lungs at twenty two yards. The bear was now growling, turning in circles and biting at his sides. The second arrow, by pure chance, went through his spine just behind the shoulder, giving us each two legs to run on. From first arrow to last breath was likely less than two minutes. But a lot of excitement packed into a ten minute hunt!

Fortunately I didn't need the TBR TSX's, because they were somewhere behind the seat.

Story will follow later got back late last night here is a teaser- squares at 7

http://www.hunt101.com/data/506/medium/grizzly_bear_033.jpg

Ok here is a brief one and I will do a story on the trip later.

I gotta say thanks to Glen ,Rick , Colin and Ernie for all your tips, sightings and info and it was a pleasure meeting all of you

The day started lucky and got better from there:-D

After drying out all our clothing to a comfortable dampness from getting caught in the rainstorm the night before and adding a pair of winter work coveralls we went out for our late afternoon/evening hunt.

We had been noticing alot of tracks and figure that the heavy rains interupted their feeding and now they were out hungry.
Bumped a couple and noticed that as soon as you turned the engine off they would stop running.
Engine start they run, engine stop they relax a bit pretty quickly. We figured that quiet and no engine noise is the key to educated bears and they seemed to run till they couldnt hear the engine any more .

We started on our ascent into the mountains and once we got to a suitable elevation we started hikeing . We would hike, glass then when we wanted to move a section we would go back to the bike and idle it to the next section . On blind corners we were shutting down waiting a bit and creeping around to make sure it was clear so we didnt bump one.

I was looking over a slide while Leah was about 10 yds from me and i saw the distinctive humped sillouette across a small valley closer then expected , I whisper excitedly for Leah to get down .

I watched the bear for a bit and motioned to Leah to come over to where i was laying which had a few young trees for cover and the wind was in our favour.
I took out the rangfinder and the bear was within easy distance. (156yds) I watched it for a bit more and determined that the bear seemed a healthy representation of what i wanted and alone.

By now i was lying there with the rifle trained on it waiting for the right angle, first it faced me , then turned with his ass towards me and then finally he settled broadside. at this point i figured it couldnt get any better so i touched one off.

The bullet met its mark and there was a slight moment that everything stopped as if a pause butten had been pressed. Then all of a sudden the bear sprung straight up as if it was standing on a hot fry pan ripping at the earth everytime it landed going like an angry bull trying to shake its rider.

I had allready cycled the action as I recovered from what felt like rimfire recoil and pasted the crosshairs on the bear ready for the next shot as it tried a stiff donkey run up hill only to watch it tip over and expire after a few meters of labour .

We made our way over to the bear checking to make sure it was really truly dead I climbed up to it and was gonna roll it down to a nice area for photos but Leah insisted we take it exactly where it fell as it fell and there was no need for positioning . (in looking at them they turned out perfect )

She took a few Photos and then after saying a few respectfull words to the bear I rolled it down to an area to work on it.
The 250g ttsx had done its job and was nowhere to be found, Its Lungs were liquid and it sounded like i was rolling a half full drum .

Now the fun stuff starts as the night was closing in fast and we were getting sprinkles of rain.

We used up the daylight and worked well into the night with a headlamp and two knives and our rifles beside us .
At about 2/3rds through the bear we figure we should bring the bike over so we hike over there and bring the bike back.
The bike had burnt out its headlight so all i had was one of those piaa lamps to navigate with so the ride out was slow going. (it also didnt like the altitude)

We skinned it out leaving the head and paws intact and takeing some meat . tied and strapped it together with cord into a package as best we can and then realized it was bloody heavy and awkward.
Placed it on the tank /bars of the bike with me hugging it, holding it on with knees , elbows and desperation as leah piled on the back and did her part holding the bear on also .
We then made the long (several hours) very slow and taxing descent to the mainline then back to camp .

Entry #1

Got this guy about a week ago up in region 6. Had a great week long bear hunt, seeing about 10 bears a day. Decided to pull the trigger on this guy on the last evening of our hunt. Should of had a bow, shot him with my 300 win mag from about 10 yards.

Loaded the truck and was on the road by 10am. After stopping by the brother in laws house to say hello, i got to my camp spot and had lunch. After some much needed relaxing I decided to get hunting ( 5pm ) Being the long weekend there were lots of people enjoying the outdoors. I wanted to hunt as low as i could as there was still ice on the lake ( up high ) and 3ft snow banks on either side of the area. I started my hunt covering many miles of cut block with no sign what so ever. Not even a hint of Bear movement or action.

Feeling a little out of sorts with no sign, I decided a snooze was the thing to do. Had an hr power nap from all the driving around and then it was getting close last light. Off I went back down the mountain and low and behold there's a 6ft bear standing beside me at about 40yrds. I grabbed my gun cycled a bullet and then he did an about face and started to run broadside of me. I let one rip and he didnt even twitch. Feeling a little beside my self at what just happened I decided to enlist some help tracking this bear. It was pretty dark by the time my help arrived. Didnt see any blood and very little tracks. We looked for close to 3 hrs and nothing.

Was feeling pretty bummed by this time and was positive i made a great shot. We packed up and decided morning was going to be better time to look.

Man what a difference day light can make. We track his prints for probably 100 yrds before we saw just a little bit of poo. That's right poo it was a tall tale sign that he was hit when you see little bits of poo every 8 to 10 inch. Then we came to an area where he had stopped and that's when we saw the blood. I take a quick look around and spotted him 30ft from where we were. Man I was pumped. SSSooooo glad we found him. I have no problems missing and having the animal get away, but when your positive you made a good shot, you never stop thinking about it......

Got my spring black bear

Left Thurs night over to Vancouver Island and met my cousin in Nanaimo. We made the 3 hour drive to Gold River to look for spring bears but due to the amount of snow and lack of bear sightings we decided to head back to Duncan and try our luck there. This was a good choice because the first morning out I was able to connect on this nice boar. He measured out 6.5 ft and was quite an old warrior with scars and fresh bite marks all over his face and paws. His teeth were worn down to the gums except his bottom canines. I shot him at 280 yards straight uphill with my 375 Ruger. Just want to say thanks to my cousin Kenny (aka huntaholic) for spotting him. He will look good on the wall. Here's some pics.

Saturday am decided to go chase some bears. Seen this boar in a logging slash, decided he would be a good one for the dogs so cut loose. Off they go-right on his ass. Finally went to tree, I snuck in and this is what I saw.

http://http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/Jake_tree.jpg

So I get him and his understudy tied off and decided to shoot this one out. I had nothing better to do that day than pack out a bear, so - Boom! Big red mist flash through the scope, I thought that was pretty dramatic...and as I reloaded (single shot rifle) the bear must have settled in to a crotch and didn't even wiggle....so I went over to the other side of the tree to investigate.

hmm, a bloodtrail- 7mm seems to be enough gun for black bear.....

http://http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/hmmbloodtrail.jpg

follow the blood trail on up

http://http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/endofbloodtrail.jpg

and very dead still in the tree is this:

http://http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/bearincedar.jpg

Head scrathing ensued. How to get him down? Well I made a ladder out of some nearby small trees, and tried for a couple hours with several close calls losing a bet with gravity and decided enlist some help.

Longe story short, the bear almost got the last laugh several times as we just escaped maiming ourselves trying to retrieve a several hundred pound animal some 30 plus feet up out a first growth cedar. I was very thankful for the help of my Son and a great Buddy, (both who had good strong backs, ha ha), and jumped in to help without a second thought.
Bear went 6' 4" with a good sized noggin.

So yesterday (the 29th) after hanging out with family and friend's, I raced out to my dad's house for an afternoon hunt. We went back to the same area as the first day. It was prime conditions again... but started off a little grim. We were cruising the road then in a cut we seen a bunch of crows and hawks scatter. I said "there's something dead down there". So my dad pulled over and we wandered in to take a look. We came across a cow moose carcass. There was only the hide, head with no nose and guts. No bones or meat anywhere. The guts hadn't even been ripped into. So we carried on seen two other cow moose. We checked out the local lake and turned around and headed for home. On our way out I spotted a black bear about 600 yards down the road. My dad stopped the truck and with the aid of binos confirmed it was a decent boar. I had come up to find a bear and it was my last day so I said I'd take him. We bailed out of the truck and loaded out weapons of choice. We made out way down the ditch. Keeping our eyes on the bear. The bear stepped off the road and out of sight. So we gum booted it down the road as fast and silently as possible. We slowed up just before the spot he walked off the road. We came to another cross road into a cut block. I spotted him off to the side of the road a couple hundred yards down. We worked up the ditch once again and the bear turned his back to us again. I ran down the road and found a stump for cover/rest.

The bear was now only 60 yards from me. I lined up with Sleena (my weatherby vanguard .30_06) not yet baptized I looked through the sights of my weaver 40/44 series 3-9x40 powered scope. I squeezed the trigger and sent my 150 grain sst flying at 3040fps. I hit the bear and it ran off towards the timber then fell over. My dad said watch him as he went to get the truck. When he got back we carefully closed in on the bear. We could see he was still breathing for a bit and put one more into his neck. He was done!! Success.

He skinned out to 5 foot 6. He was a little shorter than we thought he was going to be but he still has a big head on him. The skull isn't dried and cleaned yet. But a taxidermist says it should dry out and make 19 inches. I'm thinking it'll be a high 18 incher.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/skinned_oout.jpgI spent this morning deboning hiim for pepperoni and hamburger. I also took a few steaks off of him and had them for lunch. He is tasty.

I managed to cut both my tags in one day with the help of my bud bearslayer who also cut one tag and should've cut his second in the same day :D

Anywhoozle this first bear is my personal best. I spotted him staring at us between two beaver ponds. We approached him and he stood his ground, until the bullet blew his heart! made it only 10 yards before he piled up and a long hard, gruesome, mosquito involved drag out of the marsh. He measured at 6'-7" and an 18" skull.

The second bear was taken because we noticed it was injured (his paw/fore arm was broken & lacerated) maybe due to fighting or being hit by an atv/truck?

I didn't mind filling my 2nd tag (more pepperoni :-D) and also putting this boar out of his misery. One shot

He's around 5.5' and around 200lbs

got back from Florida last week and couldn't wait to get out on the weekend, managed to head out to one of our favorite spots on Sunday and it was a very productive day. first we hiked down an old trail and came to a small ridge were we could get a good view of a clearing about 100yards away, were we saw 2 bears playing and running around grazing and having a good time. we decided they were to small for us and backed out.
we then saw another bear running off the road as we came around a sharp corner and never saw him again although he was a nice black front end and redish brown back end.
After lunch we headed up a different road were we saw this bear sitting on a corner eating some grass, as i stepped out the truck he took off, so we went up top to try and get a look down in the direction he went but never saw him. we then went back down to the bottom and headed in a different road that went into that direction, which turned out to open into a cut.
after an hour of hiking into the cut so not to disturb him if he was in there, we spotted him walking to the far edge about 200yards away. after being shot he flipped him self over a few logs into the tree line, so we gave him some time and went to get the truck.
we then hiked down to find him and he was sitting there 20 yards in, head over a log. He was to heavy to even drag back out into the cut though so we cut him up and packed him up to the truck, which was extremely steep up hill and made it very difficult, but was highly worth it and i enjoyed it.

shot him in reg 8 just up out of coldstream, with my .270 WSM. My best bear to date.

Wow some great entries! I know I'm not allowed to win but I just had to share my story from Saturday.

I've been waiting for what seemed an eternity for the King of 6.5's to arrive at my house, the 6.5 Creedoor. Put 100 bullets down the spout in the span of a week, fine tuned the stock to float the barrel, got an accurate load and took it hunting. The same day my rifle arrived so did my very first pair of prescription glasses.

A few weeks back I picked up a bog pod tripod with a swivel rest, figured it would come handy someday when there are no trees or solid rest to be found if a longer shot presented itself.

Here is how the day unfolded....

Johnybear and I came across our first bear of the day around 11:00am He's up a hill and putting on what he thought was a safe distance between us. He's got a decent size body and small ears, perfect sausage bear.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/bear_moving.jpg

I go to the back of the truck and dig out my bog pod, set it up and line up the bear in the scope. I say to johnybear " how far do you think he is?" John heads back to the truck to grab his range finder. I figure he's somewhere around 200 yards and the bear finally stops long enough to give me a shot at the vitals. I squeeze one off as it may be the only chance I get before he gets into heavy cover and can't wait for the range finder. The bear bounds about 10 yards and we lose sight of him once he gets behind a burn pile, we get a range on where he was standing when I shot and he was 190 yards from where I was standing. We watch the burn pile to see if we can see any movement, if he moves in any direction from the back of the wood pile we'll easily see him because of the slope of the terrain.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/bog_pod.jpg

When the bear was shot he was only about 10 yards fro the spur above us and once I fired he jumped up on the road behind the burn pile. So we waited 10 minutes so we wouldn't push him if he was still alive and headed up the spur with the truck when we came upon a 20 inch old dead tree across the road. We decide to make the rest of the walk up to the bear which was around 200 yards up a fairly steep deactivated road on foot and see where the bear had gone. Marshall bounces around not quite sure what he's looking for as we make our way to where the bear was last seen from below. At first we couldn't find any sign of blood or tracks, then I notice a black lump under some branches. It didn't look that big until we tried to flip him and get a good look at him. We figure he's somewhere around 300 lbs and 5 1/2 - 6 feet long, he's a bit rubbed but it doesn't matter as I only wanted him for sausages anyways.

I did recover the bullet and will post a picture tomorrow once I've had a shower , some sleep, and some time to take a picture of it.

The 6.5 Creedmoor and the swift scirocco II's worked flawlessly to dispatch this decent size bear at 190 yards. I'll get a weight on the bullet tomorrow as well, it held together and mushroomed nicely.

We did see a second decent bear around 5:00pm but it wouldn't stop running long enough to offer a shot. Great day with great people.

Second entry, this time a group effort:

Some friends from the North Island decided they wanted to check out the South side of the Island so we planned to do a three day trip and explore some of the backroads from JR to Renfrew and then up to Cowichan.

Three of us loaded up the truck Thursday evening with all of our camping gear. The plan was to cruise back roads to a camping spot near Renfrew that was right in the centre of an awesome bear area. The hunting mojo must have been good because as soon as we pulled onto the dirt roads we saw herds of elk, the odd blacktail and a bunch of bear sign. The sign kept getting thicker and thicker, all the way into our camping spot.

We rolled up on our camp just before dark and started setting up. The guys from the North liked the look of the area: A huge network of green cut blocks that were flanked by creeks and game trails, all south facing with numerous areas to sit up high and glass down on things. The area is really sweet if your a spot and stalk kind of person - complete visibility for 180degrees from most vantage points looking south.

We decided to turn in and get started early the next morning.

Morning came and it was wet and soggy! At about 6am we couldn't take it anymore so we got out of the soggy tent and ate some breakfast. The weather was kinda bad - wind and rain and rolling fog. After breakfast, we decided to try and spot some bears anyway, after all you cant control weather.

The morning was pretty slow. We saw a few little bears during short sunny periods. The sun would come out for 30 mins or so, and we'd see a bear. When the rains came, the bears would start to meander their way back into the thick stuff.

The sunny periods were so short that we started to get a bit discouraged. What we needed was a solid hour of sun so that the bears would make their way out of the thick stuff and start exploring. We decided to break for lunch.

After lunch the weather started to improve. The sunny periods became more frequent and lasted longer and the quality bear sightings increased as well. At around 2pm, we saw what looked like a potentially decent bear. I decided to stay at my spotting location while the two other guys put the stalk on the bear. We radio-ed up and the stalk was on. It took my buddies about 20 mins to get on the bear, all the while I'm trying to size it up and get an idea of size.

When the stalkers got close, I directed them onto the bear which had made its way down into a little ravine on his way to the treeline. While watching through the binos, I saw my friend raise his rifle, take a hard look, and then lower the rifle. We decided to let this one walk... just not quite big enough. I knew the bear wasn't going to be huge, but judging from 400 yards and from above was difficult for me. Glad the boys on the ground made the final call.

After backing off that bear the two stalkers started to make their way back to me to continue spotting. The route they took hid them from my view for a short while. 5 minutes later the radio crackled and my friend informed me of another bear - this one looked alot better.

I met up with them and we decided that this one was mature enough to make it worth the while. After a 180 yard shot, the bear was down! We got the dirty work out of the way and decided what to do next.

We decided to collect our game cams that we left on the game trails early in the morning. My camera was empty but my buddy picked up a video of a bear!! It was pretty cool. The bears in the area must be thick because the cam was only there for five hours or so!

After the cams were collected we decided to vacate the area and work our way to other spots. We saw a bunch more bears but nothing that got the heart thumping.

All in all it was a good trip. Saw lots of nice country, did some scouting for the fall, and added to our sausage supply!!

Spot & stalk in north central BC. Got to within 50 yards and went prone on a dirt pile, he came up onto the road broadside and I tucked a 200gr Barnes TTSX tight behind his shoulder through both lungs. He took one big leap and started to roll, I got another shot into him and it was all over. Nice mature boar, about 6'

A friend and I were hunting some slashes on Southern Vancouver Island when we spotted this guy thrashing on alders on the downhill side of the slash. When he stood up to rub on an alder is when I realized how tall he was. We were down wind and the bear was making his way uphill into the wind about 460 yrds away so I decided to close the distance a bit and try to intercept him crossing the road or in one of the slashes on the uphill side of the road. I was getting close to where he looked like he would cross when I caught movement through the alders on my side of the road. I side stepped out to the other side of the road where I could get a shot. The bear was standing about fifty yrds away on a dirt mound eating dandylions and grass. He was broadside and slightly quartering to me so I got to one knee and put the crosshairs on the front of his shoulder. I waited for him to lift his head and let him have it with a 150 grain nosler partition out of my 270wsm. He folded up like a lawn chair in the spot. Easy drag too, simply backed the truck up to the mound with the tailgate down and rolled him right in. His hide with skull in was 6'7 nose to tail and had an armspan of 6'11 1/2. So he squares out around 6'9.

My first Blackie!!

Well after just figuring out how to post pictures here we go.
Me and 2 hunting partnres left from kamloops May 6th and headed to Smithers where we would chase black bears and grizzlies around for a week! I have hunted black bears a little bit for the past 2 years and have had many opportunites to shoot my first, but nothing got me very exciting and when it did it managed to slip away. So with the great population of bears further north and my luck drawing a Griz tag we decided to make a week long trip out of it! The first day we stopped at a place one friend thought would give us a good opportunity to get the 1st bear before we even arrive in smithers. Was he ever right! within 20 minutes of driving on the gravel road we had seen 4 bears, nothing huge but respectable bears, that night we saw a total of 12 bears including 1 that I almost took but decided to pass as the real hunting had not even started yet! after taking the following morning off and checking out the town of smithers we left for the final 2 hour drive where we would camp for the week. The 2nd day we felt like we were on vacation so we slept in until 9 made a quick breakfest then headed out to a few spot one friend has had luck in previous years. As we approach one spot we park and decide to set up a trail cam in the corner of the little field to see if any game was using the trail. As we get to the back we were looking for a tree to put the cam on and we hear a twig break, I had my gun in hand and showtimebc had the camera, as we slowly peak our heads over the little hill and look in the brush we see a bear within 20 yards feeding with no clue in the world we were even there, this went on for about 5 minutes and without being able to get a good look at him the wind turned and he took off like a bat out of hell, I went back to the road to see if i could catch him crossing but to my surprise i saw him stop just shy of the road and start feeding in some really thick trashy stuff. I called showtime over as he was my guide and has all the knowledge of bear hunting as we all know judging bears can be quite tricky to judge. We sat prone on the road for what seemed an eternity trying to figure out if this bear was a shooter when it decided it wanted to cross the road right where were were sitting, again clueless to our whereabouts it walked within 10 yards and I still wasnt convinced on his size we stood and for the 2nd time he ran for cover faster than I could blink. At this point Showtime and I started to discuss how big we thought the bear was and we made our way back to the truck, stop look back, oooo he came right back into the little field to feed as if nothing had even happened. Finally a clear look through the binos with the bear at approximately 80 yards we could see the whole body and things were looking good, good coat, decent head and what appeared to be a solid 1st bear, Showtime gave me the okay and with the ease of my finger I broke in my new Sako Finnlight 300 win mag and sent a 180gr branes tsx right behind his shoulder and out through the middle of the other. The bear ran 20 yards and this is what I walked up to, my 1st Black bear and I couldnt be happier.

As the week went on we saw on average probuably 10 bears a day, many good bears but I was looking for a monster for my 2nd and also really wanted to get a crack at a Grizzly. As things ended up we headed home with 4 bears all good boars but no Grizzlies. Couldnt have had a better trip, great friends great country and away from work for a week!

Spent a few days on the North Island this week. The weather was mostly warm and sunny. My partner and I covered a lot of ground, glassed a lot of cut blocks and saw 8 bears before dropping one. It was around 6:00pm when we got him.

We spotted him off a spur road. He either didn't care about us being there or didn't realize I was sneaking up on him due to my functional yet stylish camo wear. I took a single shot and he immediately crumpled but was able to drag himself into the thick bush. I knew there was some pretty bad damage done so we gave it a few minutes before going to look for him. Thankfully he only made it a few feet into the thick bush and expired trying to climb over a log that was in his way. He looked like he has been doing a little fighting in the past due to some scars and scrapes on his face.

I used an old model 45 savage 30.06 with a federal fusion 180 grain bonded bullet.

Coming back from fishing this evening and I spotted this nice cinnamon bear a couple hundred yards off the trail. Bear looked okay from a distance so I grabbed the rifle and me and the dog snuck in for a closer look.

We got to within 60 yards, and I guessed the bear might go 6ft and had a nice rug so I figured what the hell, might as well shoot it. So I lined up ready to off-hand him one, but he spooked and hit the road. I was about to leave him when the thought popped into my head - let the dog run him for a bit.

We were in a huge logged off area where they had left the fir standing & I figured it was as good a place as any to let the pup chase his first bear. So I told the dog to get after him, and away he went like a black streak through the shrubs with me following as quick as I could.

He caught up to the bear in about 30 seconds and gave him a couple nips on the arse to speed him up a bit. Old bear didn't like that too much and headed for the first tree he could find and scrambled up. I caught up shortly and called the dog back from the tree, lined up the bear with my 300 WSM and touched one off.
150 TTSX drilled him through the heart and he hit the ground stone dead. Done deal. Hide layed out is 6'2'', and a real pinhead of a noggin on him

Sorry about the crummy phone pic but it's all I had. Certainly an entertaining few minutes.:-D

Submitting this one for Liptugger, as he likely won't think of it ...

Story here: http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showthread.php?68172-Three-For-Three!

To conform with Contest Requirements, the story on this one has been edited in here:

As is getting to be the case with FAR too many areas on this Island, all access to those cuts were gated and locked. And a new gate now sits on Rifle Road, the intended back-up plan. Double Dammit!!

A little wandering, and we did manage to find one gate that was open. I well know that area, and also am aware it holds a decent number of bears. What if they lock us in asked one of the Ladz - Why my Missuz can come collect us with my truck, we'll retrieve anything we must, and come back for this rig tomorrow. DONE!

Rounding a corner well before one of the places (grassy hillside) I wanted to check, a larger female suddenly raced over a nearby ridge right in front of us. Better check for company I mumbled as we slid to a stop. I glassed the area and saw nada. Partner Number Two had the same results as he peered around from a vantage point. But the Lucky New Gun spoke from an even further vantage point I can see a good boar. But he is splitting quick like. Sure it's a boar he was asked. Yup! Absolutely. Take Him Down the cry, and the Man's 270 spoke once again. And again, a serious Bang FLOP! Yup, right in it's tracks! Methinks our latest addition to the fraternity is going to work out well!

This time the kill zone was all downhill, so this one was skinned, quartered and back-packed back up that hill! Tough on aging old bones, so I made sure that the majority of the work was well addressed by my younger and stronger Crew Members!

Not quite as big as the first one, but a VERY fine hide with great long guard hairs, and no rubs whatsoever! Sweet!!

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Bear_2_2.jpg

Likely to score rather well. Will letcha know once I do...

Edit to add:

Got around to some of the chores today (or at least Partner # 2 did )

http://gallery.fishbc.com/albums/Ironnoggin/Bear_2_Skin.jpg

I'm 6 feet. The hide runs 7'2" nose to tail with no tugging. Quick and dirty on the skull suggests 8.5 x 11.75 for a green total of 20.15. Not too shabby for The man's second (and he's likely to discover that by reading this as we're off in search of another!) Will get a more detailed score once it has been properly cleaned up...

Cheers,
Nog

Day three: The weather didn’t cooperate much for glassing, as it was foggy and raining/snowing. However, we went to the back end of the valley anyway, in hopes that the weather would break and the bears would be out. We spent the morning huddled around a fire under a large spruce tree. By two o’clock the weather broke and the sun came out. Almost immediately we spotted the same sow and cubs from the day before. After watching them feed across the slide, another bear appeared, seeming to come out of nowhere. This bear looked to be a lone boar in a stalkable area of the slide. I watched and filmed him for awhile and knew this was a shooter bear. At four o’clock we checked the wind, made a plan and decided to go for it. This plan wasn’t easy; it involved pumping up a raft, crossing a river, and getting around and above the bear on the slide.
By six o’clock we’d made our way up the slide, past some goats and above where we thought the bear would be. He was nowhere to be seen, but because we had a good vantage point, we decided to sit and wait. We agreed that at 7 o’clock we would have to head back to camp to beat nightfall. We sat waiting and ironically I checked my watch at 6:59, just as I saw some willows move and the bear emerge onto the slide below. He fed unaware of our presence 150 yards away. I waited for a clear shot. He stopped perfectly broadside and I put one just behind his left shoulder. The bear sunk down and then took off running toward the edge of the slide, about twenty yards away. I knew it was a good hit but I didn’t want him to get into the alder so I put another shot into him; he crumpled and rolled down the slide. Knowing what was ahead, with the river sections and washed out trail, the photo session was really short. We got the cape off and headed back to camp. It was midnight when we finally got to bed as the river crossing was an experience, to say the least. He ended up squaring 7’4”.
Special thanks to my cousin (non HBC member) for all his hard work during the hunt

Re: HBC Spring Bear Contest 2011

My first black bear.

I've hunted for a number of years, mostly for Elk, deer and moose. One thing has always bothered me though, I have never gotten a black bear!
Whether it was bad timing, the wrong spot or whatever it was, I just couldn't seem to get a black bear in the cross hairs.
My buddy is an avid bear hunter and although he doesn't get the biggest bears in the years I've known him hes never gotten skunked. After weeks of pleading and berrating via calls,e-mails and texts telling him my sob story of never getting a bear, he agreed to take me to his "secret" spot.
What a spot it was, we went for the day and just along the road up the mountain we saw 8 bear droppings in under 3/4 of a km. There were scratches and craps everywhere. The bears were here, we just needed to find one.
As we drove as far as we could go we came to a small river (I would say stream but this stream was about 30 feet across and as deep as 5 feet) We were assessing how to get across this river without having to swim or drown in the attempt. When we looked up and made eye contact with a bear on the exact opposite side of the river. Who was equally surprised as we were judging by the expression (yes it did have a surprised look) The bear was maybe 20 yards from us and took off alongside the river. He ran through some underbrush and then paused and looked back. By this time I had chambered a round and was looking at him through my scope. I left fly and caught him on the shoulder, he rolled over and tried to climb the steep embankment but then rolled down and didn't move after that.
Now came the work... Due to the lack of bridge or any safe point to cross we had to construct a shanty bridge out of dead trees laying them from one big rock to the other. It took us 2 1/2 hours to get across, gut the bear and then return across our "bridge" which would shift with the slightest ammount of weight applied. TWO AND A HALF HOURS.... I have never taken so long to go 15 yards. But it makes for one hell of a story!
(Sorry for the bad picture, a cell phone camera is all we had!)
Bear measured out to be 5.5 feet, not bad for my first bear, beautiful coat and will make some fine pepperoni! Cant wait to try it!!

These two bears are for Digger Dogger and for my wife Cory.

They were shot the same weekend using Diggers hounds. The Chases were short, under a kilometer and both were shot out of trees. Cory's bear is closer to 5 feet and took 2 shots with the 300 wm and Diggers bear went 6 foot squared, it took 3 shots from the 300 wm and was stuck in the tree for some time.

I'm uploading this for a guy named Aaron

story here

Aaron's shot was cringe-inducing and is one of the lasting images of his final hunt of the season. Five minutes into hunt #3, Aaron slammed his 180 grain TTSX bullet into shoulder into the chest of an unsuspecting bruin.

The bruin lay motionless in the clearing for several minutes and was eventually put on a quad and removed from cut block. He spent one night in the meat cooler.

“The bruin's head was down, not looking,” Aaron said.

“If it’s half a second earlier or quarter of a second earlier, maybe I’m not in this situation. But the hunt happens fast and I got my shot off”

Clearly Aaron doesn't see himself as a expert hunter. A split-second decision got him the chance to be in on the hunt, helping his fellow Vancouver hunters.

“You just have to look back to early in the season, I’m not going to name names, but there was the same incident with another hunter and there was a severely injured bear out of it, and there was no recovery at all.”

Rome said he has reached out to the bruin with his 300 win mag, sending him a pill full of lead. BANG! Flop!

“It’s an emotional time,” he said. Aaron just wants to be out there just like anybody else.

Up close and personal with Mr. Ursus

May 16 2011

At 30 yards I drew my bow and suddenly the bear looked up, meeting my eyes for one second. This was no baited stand hunt, I was standing on the same playing field in this spot and stalk BC hunt as this bear was. As I aimed for my mark the bear decided I was a problem. It bolted and I held my fire. Still, it was an awesome rush and one I won’t soon forget.

This weekend I headed up towards Lillooet to do some camping, quading, and more importantly hunting with my Dad, my brother and 2 family friends. My brother and I both have tags for black bears. But he doesn’t really enjoy the meat and he already has a grizzly rug that the wife won’t let him keep. I told him if we see a big one, just shoot it and I will make some pepperoni with him out of it. My dad got his hunting license with my brother about 18 years ago, but only ever bought one deer tag. The other two guys aren’t really interested in hunting black bears. So I felt like I had the reins on this trip as far as hunting was concerned.

So on Friday we put the stalk on that first bear. We closed the distance on the meandering feeding spring bear from 100 yards down to 30, where he busted us. I did draw on him at 50 yards because I thought I was in range, but consulting the bow mounted range finder made by Leupold, I decided to let down my draw and try to make it to 30. As the bear fed away with its head in the fresh grass we would walk up closer, staying in the ditch and using part of the bank of the road as cover. When we got to 30 yards I drew on it and was ready for the shot but the bear looked at us and bolted. I learned a couple things on that stalk. When a bear is feeding, take your time, use cover as best you can, move slowly, and too many people mean more foot noise. I am not sure what alerted the bear, but either way, we got busted. We even tried for him again that night, but he was nowhere to be found.

On the way back to camp I came around the corner on the quad to see my dad stopped on the middle of the road with his quad still running. He signaled for us to move up closer. Quickly I unclipped my bow from the quad rack and jumped on the back of my brother’s quad. We knew the bear was there watching my dad, but maybe he was sleepy or something? We rolled up to it, and at 20 yards I hopped off and knocked an arrow, the bear scrambled up the bank but at 17 yards it stopped and looked at me. I was already drawn; I checked the range with the bow mounted range finder and put the 20 yard pin on its heart and lungs. But I didn’t have the heart to shoot this little fella. He was definitely a young and scraggly looking black bear. I let down, and grabbed my camera instead to shoot him with. Probably in stupidity I got a bit to close from this naive bear, only 10 feet away. Finally after a minute of video, he buggered off.

Friday evening in the wall tent the skies opened up and the rains came down, all Saturday it continued. I figured the bears would be playing in the woods today, so I held off heading out around 3 pm in search of Mr. Ursus. Almost not wanting to go because of the rain, finally I twisted my own and my brothers arm to jump in the truck and at least go for a look see. We headed back into the spot we had stalked that first bear. After a slow walk through, no bear was seen.

As we headed back towards camp I looked down a side road as we passed. “There’s a bear!” I exclaimed. I pulled over the truck out of sight and got out to go back and look down the road. “Yep, there he is!” I said. Sure enough, we could get closer. I told my brother to grab his 338 and if it was a big one, he could take it. We climbed up the road we were on further, and from where we were, we could look down almost on top of where the bear was feeding. We jogged up the road and peeked over the edge. Sure enough there was a lone bear, it looked to be a boar by the facial features, its ears were wide enough apart, and it was mature. Not a monster belly dragger, but it was raining all day, and I was hoping the wet fur might have made the bear appear smaller than it actually was. Just then I noticed that the rain had stopped; maybe that’s why he was out feeding. We watched him for five minutes and came to the decision that if we could get closer, I would try for him with my bow.

We ran back down the high road, and I looked to see the bear heading back towards the bush. It then disappeared out of sight. I gave a puff with my wind checker bottle and the wind looked ideal! We ran as fast as we could towards the last place we saw the bear using the cover of the road side bushes. As we got to the last place of cover I knelt down and looked hard for the bear using my binoculars. Sure enough he was still in the same place, but he was sitting, and all I could make out was his paws. I would have to crawl from here. Pushing my bow in front of me I belly crawled using a big log as cover. I told my brother to stay at the log and use it as a rest for his back up 338 and cover me. From here I would have to go in alone. I thought back to the first stalk and remembered my own words of advice. Patience. I waited and watched this bear for about 2 minutes. He was bedded at about 60 yards perfectly broadside. Every 20 seconds or so he would lift his head from his paws and look right for about 7 seconds and then left for about the same, then he would lift his head, sniffing the air. Then his head would go back on his paws facing forwards. After noticing this pattern I made my move. I was in full view four times as I moved from one place in the ditch to the next, getting closer and closer. At one point he stared long and hard in my direction. I was wondering what my brother was doing behind me. He put his head back down. I came to what I thought was around 30 yards. The bear turned and looked right and I spied my opportunity and rose up out of the ditch like Rambo coming to full draw. The bear turned his head in my direction as usual and looked me directly in the eye. I thought I was busted but my camouflage Kuiu rain gear must have hid me well from his eyes, even at 26 yards, I was almost fully exposed. Then he looked forward again putting his head back on his paws. I checked the range with my bow mounted range finder with the click of a button from my ring finger while at full draw. I chose my pin, held on his heart and let the arrow fly hearing the smack of the 500 grain arrow thump into and through his chest. Bingo! I stood up and walked back to my brother fist pumping the air with my bow! “Woooo hoooo!” I whispered. I was really excited at this point. This is the first bear I have shot with my bow and it was such an incredible rush. We had a dead bear on our hands.

My brother being a rifle only hunter, wanted to run in to the bush and have a look for the bear as it had run off and into the bush behind it. I quickly kyboshed this idea and said we would give the bear at least 30 minutes. Of course at this point the worst thing happened. The skies opened up and it started down pouring again. We decided to whip back to camp, grab the guys and some guns before going in after it. Hopefully more eyes would help us find it in the quickly approaching night fall.

30 minutes later, we walked up the road past where the bear had run down into a little creek and peered down into the ravine. Looking through the non leafy spring brush was easy. Sure enough, there he was down by the creek, stone dead. We headed down to the bear with some rope and I admired this beautiful bear. It was bigish at about 250lbs. We hog tied it to a pole and my brother and I marched it out of the swampy creek and up the steep bank. To get it up the very top of the bank was tricky. It was very steep and we enlisted the help of my Dad and another guy, the steeper it got, the heavier the bear was.

It was a proud moment for me to have taken such a beautiful first bear with my bow and have my brother and father along with me on the trip. We took some pictures of the 5’10” bear and quartered him up to be made into pepperoni.

Looking back on the trip now, I think it is something that I will remember forever. It was a great time, even with all the rain! Being an avid hunter and camper that I am, it was great to share the experience with family on our once a year trip to the bush. As neither of them has ever been on a successful black bear hunt I think they will remember it for a while too. Good times.

Well I figure I'd better post this up since there are some excellent prizes up there.

I've been looking for a nice black bear for 2 years now and while I was tempted by several bears none of them were quite right. This was to be my first blackie and I couldn't decide what I wanted... I was torn between a typical black bear with a nice face and a nice coat or a nice colour phase.

One of my hunting buddies drew a spring grizz, so the plan was to head out to an area we knew held lots of bears, both blacks and grizz. He had first crack at any bears we saw since I had taken a nice (but small) grizz with him back in the fall. On our drive out to our spot we saw a nice big chocolate bear that we tried to put a stalk on, but he was pretty weary and took off into the thick stuff never to be seen again.

Getting to our spot we hiked a few km's along a ridge line glassing far in the distance with nothing to be seen. We sat for a while glassing around and were just about to leave when I decided to put my bino's to my eyes one last time. Good thing I did too because off in the distance I just caught a sliver of a black back as it dropped down behind a spine leading up to the ridge we were on. Sure enough after a couple of minutes to black emerged again on top of the spine and was headed up to our ridge. He looked like a decent bear from afar, but given that neither of us were terrible interested in a black bear we weren't too keen on going way down to the bottom to find out he wasn't worth it. We waited to see what he would do, and he just kept walking up the spine towards us. We figured we'd work our way along the ridge towards where he was heading a couple of km's away. The wind was good, and we figured we'd beat him to the spot, but as we approached and peeked over the ledge, there he was at about 75 yards downhill. We set up on him and watched him for a while, he was a decent bear, but not huge. My hunting partner really wanted to shoot him, but couldn't justify it, as he already has a black bear on his wall, and will be moving shortly, so he didn't want to be responsible for that much meat, but he encouraged me to take him.

The bear was beautiful, nice long, jet black fur with a beautiful golden muzzle, the prototypical black bear, just what I was looking for, but maybe just a tad smaller than I wanted. I was trying to decide to take him or not at 75 yards when he started working up the slope towards us. Given teh angle of the shot and the brush infront of the gun I decided to hold off... he disappeared behind a bush as he moved withing 30 yards. I took this opportunity to stand up and find a good rest in the notch of a tree. The bear came right up on top of the ridge and started working towards us... 20 yards he's on the trail feeding towards us, straight on shot, I didn't want to take it.... 15 yards quartering towards us, but I've got a small branch in the way.... Oh well if he spooks I won't be too upset, there are lots of bears..... 10 yards he stops, quartering towards again and lifts his nose, wondering what the suspicious smell is, before he can figure it out I send a 180 gr pill from my 30-06 ripping into his front shoulder. He goes tearing away into the bushes... we wait to hear him pile up or moan, but everything is silent.

I was starting to worry that the shot was a bit high... we gave the bear about 10 minutes while we approached the spot where he was hit.... Very little evidence that he was even there... a few scuffs on the ground and smoke broken twigs where he took off, but no blood.... then I see it, a nice bright red glob of tissue hanging from a bush.... it wasn't much, but it was there and it looked like lung. We start scanning the bushes more closely, not quite ready to push him yet, but just to get an idea where he went in, then I spot a pile of black fur at the base of a tree not 30 yards away. We watch for a few minutes, no movement, then walk up to my first black bear. No monster by any means, measured just a tad over 5ft on the carcass, but he's a typical black bear for up here and has a beautiful face to him. He'll go great with my fall grizz, now I've just got to make room on my walls....

Well might aswell contribute.

Headed out in Squamish after work even though I was tired I figured I'd just be bored at home. Loaded up the truck with my gear and headed out around 6:30pm. I knew one of my spots had a respectable bear hanging around it so thats the first place I headed. Sure enough I spotted him right away at about 150yrds. Wanting to take a closer look I quickly loaded the T/C with 100grs of powder and a 300gr. sabot. The wind was perfectly in my face as I began my stalk. Watching him munch away on grass, every few minutes he'd look up and take a look around. I snuck a few yards at a time everytime he began feeding again. Before I knew it I was within 40yrds. I snapped a couple of pictures and decided although not a monster he had the nicest coat I've seen and my tummy was growling for some bear steak.

He feed a little to my right and slightly behind a knoll so I slowly moved forward. Peaking my head over the knoll there he stood at 20yrds perfectly broadside. Thats when it hit. I pulled out my digital camera, switched it to video. Setting it on a rock beside me I lined it up and hit record. Peering through my scope I settled the crosshairs on his vitals and as he looked up the T/C "BARKED!" Smoke blurred my vision as the boar bottled over a nearby embankment. I quickly looked at my camera and reviewed the footage. Walking over to the embankment I peered down and saw him lying on his back 10yrds down it. He was done for in less than a minute and only made it 40yrds. I quickly texted my girlfriend and told herthe story. She brought out her 2yr old daughter to have a look. After getting her picture taken with the bear she looked at me and said "OK daddy lets let him go so we can go ome." I smiled at her as her mom picked her up and they headed home. I began the long work of field dressing him and getting him to the truck. He was a nice boar estimating his weight at 325, beautiful hide thats now in the freezer. I've enjoyed the meat and have even cooked a few roasts for my girlfriends brothers and father. They'd never tried bear before and to say the least the roasts didn't last long.

Well I got lucky this year and arrowed a bear. I have been lucky enough for this being my third bear with a bow at only being 16 . . . . Well it was day three, which was only a going to be a half day, which ended in a hour. So my father and I descided to try one of pur favorite spots, and there you have it mr. bear was out munching away, so we descided to wait a little bit and make sure it was a boar or at least make sure it was alone. So my dad and I jump into the bush and start heading it towards the bear a kilometer in the bush, so after an half hour sneaking through the brush, we finaly emd up on a cow trail leading to the fields . . . so well we start heading to the edge amd we see him 35 yards through the brush, so I set up on a "Y" on a trail atticipating the bear to go on this trail(because he was feeding towards it) , , , 5 minutes later hes heading up the main trail. his head behind heavy brush I draw my bow, the bear keeps walking but! he turns onto the trail I'm on, so here Im kneeling on the ground on the middle of a trail full draw and I just couldnt let the bear get any closer and finaly let yelled " hey you! " he looks up and I let the arrow fly, The bear spins around and I get to watch him tumble over 20 yards away my rage broad head sure did its job! . So in the end after some high fives and hugs with my dad we paced it out it was between 5 and 7 yards. (Cant realy judge the bear cause im big guy and i didnt do any picture magic ;) )

I would be delighted with #3, the First light merino wool gear.

Thanks to all who donated, all very generous prizes; and to those who organized the contest!

You are a fool.

LOL. Thats just funny right there. I'm surprised you didn't pick yourself Gate!

I would also like to thank all the people who donated stuff to the contest. I think it was a another great spring contest, and it was fun looking at all the different bears out there.

Will post up some pics of my stock when it is done. That guy does incredible, (I mean really incredible stuff) and for a good price too. If you ever need a stock refinished or want a custom webbing paint job. Mike's work is better than new.

Congrats everyone!

I thought I was a lock with two entries, LOL. Oh well, a freezer full of sausage is nice conciliation, and it looks like some youths got some great stuff!

Hey Gatehouse, will there be an HBC inquiry into the draw process? This site needs transparency :)

I anyone is wondering how the draw is done, it's simple. I make a list with names of entires, then assign a random number to each one. Then I get another mod to use a random number generator to come up with as many numbers as there is prizes. IN this case there were only 2 youth entries and 2 youth prizes so I flipped a coin to see who got first pick.

Fall Big game contest I will be introducing a form to fill out, to keep things simpler for me. :)

Hmmmmm....don't see any "big names" at all in the winners list at all.
Just guys that were fortunate to harvest animals within the perameters of the contest
The high school quote is one that came from someone who didnt put an entry in:redface:

Or from someone who is still in high school?
