I am thinking about spring Black Bear and the bow this year, but not to sure about the numbers game with these string wingers.

My current and only set up for the last eight years is a PSE Team Fitzgerald (aka Nova) I ran it over the crono the other day and told me 207fps with a 29" 430grain arrow which sits at around 36-38ft/lbs of energy, is this enough for black bear?
draw weight is 65lbs currently
any suggestions on how to get that energy up some?
oh and where's a good place to find a new server string? I'm not to up in this department quite yet.
Or am I better off getting rid of the cable and just running a one piece string on this set up? if I can.

A bit anemic, but definately suitable. Three-four years ago I was with my hunting partner who shot a black bear at about 20 yards with a 425 grain arrow at ~215 fps. Passed through like a hot knife through butter.

It's ALL about where you put your arrow. If you do your part right - wait for the right shot angle, put the arrow in the heart/lung area, and don't over extend your range - you're going to have a dead bear to deal with.

Good luck out there and don't forget to post pics with your story.

I am curious as to what your draw length is. At 65 lbs you should be shooting faster than 207 fps. I have a 26.5" draw and pull 56 lbs. and I get 240 fps. I haven't weighed my arrows but next time I am at the shop I will. Maybe that is the difference?

Draw length is set to 29" or just shy, my arrow shaft and nock measure 29" and then there's a 100g bullet tip attached, they are Easton alloy 2114 & 2115 is what I have been using.
I was given a carbon arrow yesterday Beman ICS 400 it probably weighs in around 390g with tip/nock/insert/fletching yada & yada. it didn't seem to fly faster than 216fps.

If I'm lucky I'll get the bear from the back yard when I'm in the stand before it gets into the LL's garden.

thats what I would expect with a Nova with that weight of arrow ... I was getting 210 from an older PSE polaris express with a 450 grain arrow and 65 pounds (my first bow hunting setup) .....

the KE might be a bit weak for some around here .... with a good sharp broadhead and good placement you will zip right thru that bear ...... think about it for a minute ... Trad guys shoot about 500 grain arrows out of their long bows at what 175ish ..... they still have meat hanging .... why would you be concerned??? as far as getting your string re-served ... there is a couple places on the south island that you could go ..... I would probally get a new string and cable set up totally if I were you and after that you will probally see some faster numbers to put your mind at ease a bit more

the KE might be a bit weak for some around here .... not sure
with a good sharp broadhead and good placement you will zip right thru that bear ...... quite possibly
think about it for a minute ... OK
Trad guys shoot about 500 grain arrows out of their long bows at what 175ish .....did not know that
they still have meat hanging .... yes they did
why would you be concerned??? ethical kill is on the mind

I would probally get a new string and cable set up totally if I were you and after that you will probally see some faster numbers to put your mind at ease a bit more, I doubt that my mind will be at ease any time soon, it's always thinking something.

Thanks Mikey

I am willing to bet if your string is original than its way streched our since PSE of that era made the crappiest factory strings in the first place .... with a custom string of 20-24 strand of 8125 material you would have seen at least a 10fps gain over new factory string shooting the same equipment .... ... a new string will give you a bunch more speed I suspect ....

expect about a 100 dollar touch for new string and cables .... (probally cheaper but expect a hundy and be surprised when it isnt)

Phone them and ask for Richard Kennet. He'll make you a set.

I don't now of any other string makers in or on the South Island.

Sweet thanks :). i figured out that my arrow grain with everything including a broad head is 369. It sounds like too much but who knows.

A brand new PSE Stinger ($299.99), with the 29 inch draw, and 65 lbs draw weight, would shoot that 430 grain arrow at about 265 fps, with 67 ft-lbs of KE. Just saying.
