I been reading up on here about shed hunting, seems a good way to do some scouting and enjoy some bush time. What do you guys do with the sheds? Is it legal to sell them or even worth selling them? Do you keep em for display purposes or to make a knife handle or something? Anyway seems pretty enjoyable. Good luck on your next outting.

Wayne i recognize the area in your clips, The wife and i were also out this morning looking for some bone just a couple of ridges up the road from you. We never found anything at all, Been a productive area in the past just not today. I'm sure it was your truck i saw backed in off the side of the road just before the canyon? We saw it on our way out. Good luck Neil.

I think after seeing your 2nd day footage - I'd put all my effort into steep, ridged, heavier Douglas Fir timber stands instead of the pretty open stuff.

A good looking wintering area is the really steep timbered habitat on the corner of Bull Mountain above the gravel pit area. (not the open stuff)

Another area worth checking is up by Skookumchuck in the steep timbered slopes above Quartz Lakes as well as the timbered slopes of Rock bluff area or any of those timbered ridges facing the valley from Elko to the US border.

I keep the good ones that are big for show and all others I give them to people that can use them and no it is not illegal to sell them ,thanks for the encouragement :).

I know one thing if your not out there you won't find any sitting at home.

Five days striaght of shed hunting in well known winter range and just a few old shed. Do you think they're wintering elsewhere or thats all there is for bucks in that area? Wayne you won't be seeing fresh elk sheds for another week or two.

It takes alot of exploring to find a good spot ! And a good spot is were there are no quaders= road closers...hint hint
I'll put a couple of pics from one of my honey holes into my gallery-my first matching elk set over 300 ---11 elk ,1 , matching 130 set of whities,a couple of ticks, all in a snow storm ...that's oldschool !

Sorry about sending you to a dead spot Wayne I guess alot changes in 18 years. There seemed to be alot of sign though , it is still a spot I think you should hit in Nov whitetail season it used to hold a lot of bucks. Hopefully it still does. I went out today and found a couple open side hills to walk. The snow was 2 feet deep getting there though. I found 4 muley sheds in 2 hours. Two old and two fresh ones. old spike , old 2 , new 3 and a new 4 all were in good shape no chews. Nice sunny day and I had a great walk with the hound.

moose2 ,WesHarm ,henderson ,Whonnock Boy ,PS Whonnock Boy love the elk in your Avatar any pictures ???? as for others that I did not mention ,I consider that we are all a big family on this forum and it brings me great pleasher to have members join me on my past 5 day shed hunt by viewing my footage.

There is some footage from other members and I really enjoy seeing this footage from other members ,just wish there was more of it on this site.

I use a $350.00 video camera JVC that I bought from Future shop it also has a switch to change to camera mode ,I think that all you members should carry one with you you kick yourself in the but if you don't have one when you see something special you would love to film.

I would be lost with out my camera it would be to me like leaving my rifle at home if I did not bring my camera I enjoy shooting with the camera as much as shooting my rifle at a big game animal thats how addicting it can get ,hope all you members that viewed my clips enjoyed being along with me on my journey ,thanks for viewing them ...:)

Nice to hear from you my friend I circled around up and down for an hour looking for the matching shed gave up I was getting tired it was steep area where I found this shed I am not a young man anymore and I was getting tired after walking for 5 hours up mountains and up and down gullies ,most people at the age of near 64 can't do what I have done in the past 3 weeks and I am happy with mt fitness at my age.

I had picked up two older sheds before I found the fresh mule shed if you look at one of my you tube clips earlier it shows me filming this older shed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLgs44drHA8 the other one I had was not in the video clip ,LOL I may be getting old but I am still on top of everything LOL ,if you where with me we might have found the other shed covering more ground..

posting pictures at 3;30am in the morning ????????

man! take a sleeping pill ! :-?

Doug I know you are pulling my leg on your post LOL ,here is to reason I get up early.
#1 I don't have a little women to curl up to in my bed at night all by myself and thats one reason I get up early.
#2 I can go to bed and get up when my body tells me to I am retired and I can do this when I want no women here to tell me if I can or can't.
#3 I only need about 6 hours sleep at night then I am wide awake ,at my age they say older people don't need lots of sleep ,I believe this.
#4 I love living in the EK all I do is think about what the next day will bring me ,shed hunting ,scouting ,fishing ,getting my camping area set up in Aug ,quad riding ,water skiing ,being with my granddaughter and my daughter at times all this keeps me awake sometimes at night.
#5 When I wake up after going into a deep sleep for 5 hours I am wide awake and its hard to get back to sleep in most cases I will lay there trying to go back to sleep for the next hour in most cases I can't go back to sleep I have had enough so I get up and onto HBC ,facebooks ,online banking ,MSN.
#6 It might be a different story if I had a lady living with me my sleep habits might change ???? I won't know this until it happens if it ever will ??? time will tell ???.
#7 going through 3 divorces takes its toll and a person I do lots of thinking why this has happened to him 3 times its like trying to put a puzzle together you never find the last few pieces..
#8 I usually hit the sack around 8pm and up at 2am in hunting season scouting season its a different story I go to bed well after 10pm and up at 4am ..

Doug and other HBC members that about sums it up why I am an early riser now every one knows ...

Hunter1947, I would suggest going back to the most recent spot (the one with bulls still packing) in about a week or ten days - they will be dropping soon! Your efforts will be rewarded with some wapiti tine.

Thats good Wayne, just like with your hunting, you have some pre scouting done, now you just have to hope they stay in the area and drop there.
In the meantime you can locate more bulls in different areas and have a couple spots to check up on.
Now you have to hit the remote areas and find the big boy(s)

Yesterday was an all day shed hunt and was I ever tired when I got home it all started under bad weather conditions snowing at -1 I and bearass from HBC peddled and walked our mountain bikes in 6k in a road closure then stared looking for sheds on foot we walked about 5 hours looking for sheds before returning back to our peddle bikes late in the day.

Some footage of animals to show the shed hunt was fantastic outing but came up short on finding few sheds between the two of us we found one dead female sheep ,4 old elk sheds two old mule deer sheds and two old WT sheds this area others have said is the wintering grounds for all animals but where are the fresh sheds ??? ,it was a good work out for an old fart meaning me ,here are the results from yesterdays outing :-D http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon6.png.

That picture looks good Wayne. Shed hunting is like hunting it takes some time to locate good areas and to learn where not to go. In a couple of years it seems to fall into place. I always like to return to the areas early in the spring where I did well the year before. Then I do lots of looking in different spots with simular characteristics. Exposer to the sun , feed , cover , distance from vehicle access and so on. Every year you will add hot spots to your list. They do change sometimes but usually you find them near by. Finding 2 and 3 year old sheds is a good indication that no one picks that area much, so I like to put a good effort out there as well. We still have a fair bit of snow up here so I have not got serious yet I will post some pictures once I start getting out more. I have been an avid shed hunter fo about 20 years , and it looks like you have a pretty good idea of what you are doing. I am looking forward to the rest of your 2011 pictures. PM me if you have any questions you think I may be able to help you with. Great job getting your first EK fresh elk shed. I enjoyed your excitement on the video when you found it. I have probably found over a 1000 or more and I still have that excitement when I am walking up on one , thats what keeps a guy going.
Talk to you later Mike

Nice job Wayne!!

What the heck?! how did a 6 pt live to drop sheds?? Must be in a remote valley only eeking out a meager survival living in the cliffs like a goat.....;)

BTW..........if that tick made a mark on you to the point of drawing blood........GET ANTIBIOTICS now! doxycycline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doxycycline).........6 weeks worth.

I know a family that is going through all out horror stuggling with children that have Lymes Disease....it is a real problem and you should take that contact very seriously. It is fine if they are just on you, but if they had a chance to lock in and make a mark on your skin, you are at risk.

Had a real work out yesterday and came up on the short end of the stick for my effort but the main thing is I had a good outing and thats all that counts.

Saw a bull elk with 6 inch antler growth yesterday he was to fast for me to get a video of him I have been told that the big bulls can grow up to 3 inches of
antlers a day..

These matching set of WT sheds I found yesterday in my video I said that they where from last year but I got to thinking about this and I am sure they are
from this year ???.

Say this buck dropped them antlers in late Jan it then has been 3 months from when this buck dropped them this would be plenty of time for the rodents
to chew on what you see here ,what do you members think this years dropping or last years ??? its your call.

They look fresh to me Wayne. A way to tell for sure is to scrape inside the burr around the pedical with a knife fresh antlers usually have a membrane there that will not last the full year , also year old pedicals go a bit gray or even have a tinge of green on them. I have seen rodents destroy most of a moose shed in a few months. I find that the ones in the timber get heavily chewed and the ones on the open side hills seem to stay in good shape other than drying out in the sun.

I do agree with you Mike on where antlers are found I found these sheds in thick big timber lots of squirrels in the timber and as you said when in the open less chance of getting chewed up .

Been following your thread for awhile now wayne. Looks like your having a lot of fun!

I went out looking for bears yesterday and found one of these. Pretty cool find for Quesnel. I've never held an Elk antler before, I must say holding one makes me want to shoot one :D

Taylon TPB from HBC and me decided to go to the place where I found that first single elk shed and come over the area to try and find the other no luck after looking for about an hour.

Then we decided to put some leather on in the woods ,no luck finding a shed after 5 hours of looking ,I said it gets to a person sometimes working this hard and coming up on the sort end of the stick sometimes.

As we where headed back to the truck about 1 mile to go to the truck and all of a sudden there it was the shed laying there in the black timber so wonderful to see got so excited.
I made the call on the first shed on the ground and my other shed hunting partner Taylon called out on the second shed it was about 10 feet from the one I saw the other shed I could not see because it was behind a tree so Taylor got to keep the shed that he saw and I got to keep the one I saw.

I got thinking about this for a short while and thought to myself that I would like to see the matching set kept together so I said to Taylor here you can have my shed Is better to keep them together he was very thankful that I did this for him ,here are a few pictures and clips from out hard days shed hunt ...

Good job guys thats a nice pair its always nice to pair them up. 10 feet makes it easier I once found a big fresh muley 4 point with a 4" brow tine off a 180" class buck in a willow patch on the top of a huge river bluff. I searched the near by area for an hour or more. I couldn't find that one but found three others while I was looking. I had given up and continued about a 1 km down the ridge the willows were getting thick so I followed a old deer trail through them I had to get on my hands and knees to get clearance for my pack board. I had crawled about 10 feet and there staring me in the face was a huge fresh muley shed , I grabbed it and when I got out the other side I had a good look it was a big drop tine with a 4" brow as well. I couldn't believe my luck I paired these up after a km and in very thick willows. It was a bit of a fluke , but it happened this was the luckiest pair I have found to date. I have found moose and caribou pairs that far apart as well , but in easier conditions. Then on the other hand I have found some that were touching these ones save alot of time.

That picture was from the spring 2005 it was the year I had 6 weeks holidays and I went out most days. They were all found in the same year. I was able to sell them it paid for my time off as well as covered all my 2005 hunting expences.
I don' find that many every year. It all depends on the time I am able to put in. I don't have to many close up pictures kicking around I will keep this in mind this spring and take pictures of any big pairs.

I will be going back to that spot this spring to see if I can find anymore from this bull. With 7 on the brow it should be easy to know if there from the same bull.

Sounds like a really good day Wayne. I went looking for moose sheds on Tuesday with ( Combine pilot ) and another partner.
The snow was to deep to get where we wanted , but I did find a nice fresh pair in a spot the snow had melted off. Then I found 2 more fresh single ones later that same day. My partner found 2 white 5 point white tails from different bucks. Combine pilot has been finding some as well I will post his as well.

Heres the pair a 8 x 10 with 3 on each brow about 25 lbs for the pair they were found about 2 feet apart from each other one up one down. It would have been a 9 x 11 without the 2 broken points.

Nice antlers Wayne.
Normally if you measure the circumference between the burr and the first point at the smallest point a pair will usually be the same. Unless there is a deformity on one of the antler bases anything out by more than a 1/4 inch is probably not a match. Going by the look I would think color wise they could be a pair I would like to know the base measurements to help with a decision as far as different points its common to have a difference from side to side. I shot a 3 x 6 elk a few years back and i have seen many 2 x 4 muleys over the years. If antlers are found in the same exposer color can also help you to tell if they are a match.
I am looking forward to your next pictures, you must be getting a good collection now. The more you find the more addictive this hobby gets.
Talk to you later Mike

Nice antlers Wayne.
Normally if you measure the circumference between the burr and the first point at the smallest point a pair will usually be the same. Unless there is a deformity on one of the antler bases anything out by more than a 1/4 inch is probably not a match. You know what you are talking about Mike you are right about the base measurements I did not even have to put a tape around the base I did not show the picture of the base wanted to see what members thought .

Just looking at the base of both antlers I see that one is a lot smaller then the other they are not a matching set :)..

Yesterday I saw my first EK Griz sence living here in the EK he was a big old boar brown its a good thing he was scared and run fast away from my sighting, I started my shed hunt about 1K from where I saw this brute.
I had not a bad day shed hunting yesterday found 3 elk sheds as for an old WT shed I know one thing I had my defender loaded up with 7 rounds in it and had it in my hands lots when entering dense cover.

I will be headed out to this same area this morning to see if I can find more sheds ??? will post up todays outing latter this afternoon I hope I don't see this boar griz today ,here are my clips from yesterdays outing found another matching set of elk antlers 2 feet apart was lucky to find..

Well sad to say but my shed hunting days have come to an end yesterday was my last days shed hunt till next spring :(..
I covered the ground where I filmed that 5x5 bull last week but had no luck I got to know some good areas for sheds and possible good spots to hunt elk ,WT ,mule deer :-D.

I have lots of things to tidy up around here before the first of July when July rolls around I am off into the bush to scout till Sept then when Mid Aug rolls around I will be in the bush the rest of the year till late Nov or even early Dec.

Yesterday I pushed that Griz out from his bedding area in the big timber or a different Griz ?? I thought it was a elk running away did not see this animal but I new it was a Griz because it roared at me 3 times as it was exiting in the big black timber I was ready for the Griz but he was a good Griz he wanted nothing to do with me lucky me..

I had a wonderful day yesterday walked about 6K and only found one new elk shed but it was a good find because this shed was the matching side to the other 4 point I found last week the shed was about 1/2 K from the other one I found last week :-D.

Roughly this is the amount of KLM and days I put on walking for just over 2 months shed hunting ,,,,,Days out shed hunting 41 days 250K walking I am 175 pounds right now lost 15 pounds while shed hunting for the 2 months ,here are the results of my finds for 2011 shed hunting 4 matching sets of elk sheds 2 matching sets of WT deer no matching sheds for mule deer ,total elk sheds fresh 12 ,old sheds 50 ,fresh WT sheds 5 ,fresh mule deer sheds 4 :-D.

Here are my clips from my final day of shed hunting for the year of 2011.

Notice the lump on this cows neck ???

You picked up a lot of bone Wayne, lots of time put in for sure.
Too bad you couldn't locate a set off a big bull you want to get after this fall.
No big deal though, I know you'll find a couple big boys this summer.

LOL Wayne. "If you guys tell me where your all your 6 antler sheds are I won't shoot you this fall if your 6 points." If a hunter talks in the forest, does anyone hear? You bet, the animals. It is funny what a hunter will talk to when he is alone in the woods. Chipmunks, elk, deer, hawks, ants........... little sob'in ants that crawl up your pant leg while your trying to sit still and be quiet. :-D

LOL I am getting real good at talking to myself in the wild maybe I have been by myself to long ???? lots more talking to myself in the months to come when I head into different areas scouting for animals and putting out my trail cams etc the start of July.
I just hope the animals don't start talking back to me or I might like it LOL especially the bull elk they might tell me where there grand daddy is .

First time here shed hunting and i think I did well for my first season living in the EK ,all spots where I found sheds have been dated and pined where I found them ,hopefully next year I will find more sheds will have the upper hand knowing where to look :)..
