Recently drew west of Atlin in area 27a, wondering if anyone has hunted this area and if they had success. Planning a fly in trip but interested in any input on how to best hunt this area, without horses.

I would just go to Moon Lk and go north. I have looked at it from the Tutshi Lk side and you could get up that way, but it's very steep. The record book shows white rams from that area in the old days and the outfitter sure take some pretty rams.

Thanks for the input, have you seen much for caribou in the area? We were thinking about going east from mon LK, north does look good also. I see the outfitter advertises for Dall sheep but I thought this area was to far east for them? Unless his territory goes a long ways west of that lake, also did you run into much grizz sign around Tutshi LK?

Some of the sheep in the GO's area are technically Dall sheep (west of Bennett lake which is part of 6-2 8. His territory goes as far west as Silt lake. Anything east of Bennett are considered Stone's(fannins)...which is 6-27A....where you were drawn.
There are some caribou in that area and there are grizzlies pretty much everwhere....which always keeps things interesting.:)

If lucky we will have a couple bear tags on the trip, do you know how many sheep hunts the outfitter usually books. Has some nice pictures on his site. What airline would you recommend for leaving from Atlin? (Four people into a small lake)

I dont think there is an airline out of atlin, you will have to fly out of whitehorse.

With 4 guys you will have to look at using a Beaver or making two seperate trips with a smaller plane.

Yes I have. I think I was around 19 or 20 years old back then and probably about 165pounds (I was quite thin back then).:):):)

Sheep in this area go over the brdige in 6-8 year, A new guide has purchased the tenure I was told.

The country is steep and the moonlake area obviously sees some pressure from the guide. the sheep are fanin, usually have colour legs and chest, beautiful non the less.
I have hunted the area twice by hiking in from tutshi it's not too bad (No trails) you can be at Moon lake in a day easy. I saw a few moose, 4-griz, many caribou, many goats and sheep. beauty country look at my gallery if you want to see some pics.

Nice pictures, nice country, even a bit of snow. Looks like there are enough trees to have a campfire to dry gear and cook over. What part of the season did you go for? we are thinking late august.

Our group got a sheep tag for that area but we are debating on if it is worth four of us going up there with only the one tag. We are going to be waiting for the results for goat. We have gotten sheep and goats from that area in the past.
