View Full Version : Shed Hunting Today...
Well i went out for the 5th time this year still unsuccessful so i decided to try a different area. It was raining/snowing and pretty warm so rather than quading to an area i wanted to go which i would of gotten stuck i stayed close to my house. I hiked all morning and seen about 50 elk, and atleast 30 does (or bucks.) I ended up not finding anything and went home for a bite to eat.
After a quick snack i went out for another look around, i walked around for a few more hours and stumbled upon a whole bunch of deer. I ended up watching a bald eagle feast on a pretty fresh elk kill for about 15 minutes. Then i came across a sh*tload of turkeys which was startling to see, guess i will check that out around april 15th. I eventually got bored and decided to call it quits so on the way back to the quad i found a nice 5 point whitetail shed. I looked for the matching set and ended up finding a real heavy 4 point about 50 yards away that didn't seem like a match. Unfortunately it was badly chewed up and in rough shape, i wasn't able to
find the other side of the 5 point so I buggered off back home.
Here a few pics of the sheds:

Thanks, out in Wasa there is only snow in the heavily shaded areas, and in kimberley its still loaded full of snow.
Part 2: I went out this morning again and went for a long walk until i found this little thing, man it was old. http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g406/tpb123/110322111700.jpg
Off again in a few minutes hopefully to find a fresh one.
When you find a fresh rub out shed hunting is it worth looking at the base it or is it just a good sign? Another question i have is if anyone knows if the elk have dropped yet? Thanks

I am no expert, but I wouldn't think many of those rubs were made when antlers were about to fall off. Probably made in september for velvet stripping, or nov/dec for territory marking during the rut.

I have heard of a few elk being picked up recently

Thats what i figured but i found a few rubs with fresh shaving on top of the snow and it was still full of wet sap, so i have no clue?

Haha i didnt want to put the effort into packing that monster out so i stuck the brow tine into the flesh of a tree to give somebody a "what the hell" moment

Nice work! I used to know an avid hunter from Sparwood who had his lab trained to sniff out sheds. Each year he would find dozens. Might give that a go with my next pooch...

Haha i have my mom convince to buy a chocolate lab for the next family dog, but little does she know i have intentions to train him to sniff out sheds and bloodtrail, sounds like a good idea.
