So tell me...."WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HUNTING MAGAZINE" ? There are some really awsome/terrible magazines out. My favorite right now is Kings Hunting Illustrated. It has great "western" content. In a close second we have a tie between Big Buck & Big Game Adventures. So...whats yours ?

Muley Crazy hands down is the best. Eastmans Hunting Journal, Trophy Hunter and Big Buck follow in that order.

Most hunting magazines from Petersen's Hunting. Big Buck Magazine and a few others. Usually I read the cover and if there are articles that interest me I buy the magazine. But lately I do most of my reading on the internet to do research for articles on my three hunting blogs.

texas trophy hunter mag is horrible unless you like advertisements of deer seamen and feeders.

Big Buck mag for me as well, the only drawback is it's quarterly, not monthly....Subscription price is great and not much advertising. Always looking forward to finding it in the ole mailbox:-P .

Big game adventures, they always have a good chunk of bc hunts as well as around the world stuff, on the down side they do feature "fenced" hunts which I choose not to read. I got away from bc outdoors when they went to fishing only mags, but from your comments I might have to rethink that stratedgy, How many hunting features are there a year??

I used to love Big Game Adventures until it became too much like a Cabelas catalogue!

I like Handloader the best of al the magazines, actually. Can't stand Big Buck, although i look at the pictures a bit.

BGA has good stories most of the time, and that's what I want to read. Not "Top 10 Strategies to nail your whitetail this year"

A reflection of the growing sentiment that hunting is bad. Smashing a fish in the head, spilling blood and guts, using fish to catch fish... thats all ok :-?

For I while I think it split into 2 mags. hunting and fishing but I never see the hunting one on the shelf anymore. It's really a shame 'cause that's my problem with alot of these magazines is the lack of Canadian/B.C. content. I'm new to the sport and I really like the advice/how to stuff, I just find it's always geared toward yankee style hunts--fenced or private land. Big Buck is good but it's more stories than advice, not that you can't learn anything from stories, especially the "I'll never do that again" ones:wink: . I see a few names here I'm not familiar with though, so I'll check them out.

Agreed on all points,

Can't stand the B.S. in big buck the magazine is so full of it I can actually smell it across the room. No offence but I think of it like the romance novel equivalent of the hunting world! I have never read hunter illustrated so will have to check it out I prefer the how to articles like many others and honest reviews of gear and guns.

For all the other hunters out there in the lower mainland, don't you hate it that you can never find a hunting mag on the shelves at your corner store, gas station etc. in town. Here in surrey I found a store a number of years back that carried them, as I was paying for it an anti that was behind me in line questioned the vendor as to why he would have that kind of content in his store suggesting he was unethical. I told her to fly to **** and mind her own business in a forcefull way and she shut up. I stayed after and asked the vendor how often he gets this crap and he told me at least once every couple of weeks. He is now out of business and I don't have a local place to buy hunting mags but little wonder if vendors recieve this kind of abuse.

I think it was Jack O'Connor who wrote that outdoor writing was essentially re-writing the same three story ideas over and over again.

I can't remember the exact quote. If I find it, I'll post it.

I have to agree.

Except for the "How I shot my big (fill in your favourite game animal here) " stories, they all start to seem alike to me.

A buddy gave me a collection of Petersen's Hunting Annuals from the 1980s a few years back and I was just going through them again looking for things on waterfowling and chukar hunting I'd ignored before, and I think O'Connor was right.

BGA is just a huge ad for outfitters and high fenced hunts. It costs an arm and a leg and the content is very poor IMHO.

The mags that tell the story in the hunter's own writing is what I like. You want the fluff of "how to's" you might as well stick to Petersons or Outdoor Life. And the "how to's" offered in those mags are reruns of reruns of reruns. They are very basic and never go into the meat and potatoes of actually hunting.

If you want to read How to's you are better off reading a book rather than a magazine. Pick your species and you can probably find some quality reading that is not fluff. An example would be Hunting High Country Mule Deer by Mike Eastman or Public Land Mulies The Bottom Line by David Long.

I get the Trio of Rifle, Handloader, and Successful Hunter the same writers do all three and they do a good job. No political BS and not a whole bunch of ads and I hope it stays that way. Can't even pick up a copy of Field & Stream or Outdoor Life anymore, because you gotta search between the ads for an article.

I have 9 subscriptions being delivered and honestly in my opinion the Trad Bowhunter and the western sportsman are the best. The problem with the other mags is there is just too damn much advertising, to the point where there isn't much hunting content just page after page of ads. I am in BC and have a sub to Ontario out of doors too. that mag is awesome, I love em all and keep subscribing, but there aren't may that get worn out in a course of a month like the three I mentioned. the rest get a glance and get brouhgt out to the shed or to the sportsman's club. Fur fish and game are good too but have lots of ads in them as well.

Agreed on that...Like I said, BGA was a far better read before it became a catalogue!

Although I am sure that the magazine has more readers and makes more revenue now than it did when it was a slim magazine filled mostly with hunting adventures in remote areas, rather than the canned hunts of present.

1. Traditional Bowhunter, real hunts, real hunters, more than just "This is what happened"
2.Eastman's muley specials
3.Bugle though I havn't read it in a while
4. Big bucks is good for some pics
I used to love BGA when it was more North America and until it started with the canned hunts and focus on exotics, good pics though.
Just a note, they do very little editing of sent stories.

Well if it makes more revenue now, I couldn't tell because they stiffed my buddy a few times on articles he wrote for them and they promised to pay. The were published of course and no cheque in the mail........

My father had subscriptions of BC Outdoors from about '78 -'98. I like to borrow them 1 year at a time and read the old stuff, i find it interesting to see how things have changed and things that haven't changed. I think I would resubscribe if they brought the hunting back but their fishing mags don't do anything for me.

As for the fenced hunts.....If Raymond needs to publish Fenced hunts for content let him but as long as this continues he'll never catch me reading.

I get BGA, but I paid for one year in 99 and still get it, it says my subscription runs out in 09. Only paid for one year. Will continue to read it as long as I get it for free.

Cannot stand the "how to mags" except the archery ones as they have given me many tips to improve my shooting.

For me its Trophy Hunter, Big Buck and Bugle. Can't stand to read BGA, a guy at work gave me one too read one night, guess I was bored.

Couldn't believe that they would publish a story where the publisher of the magazine goes out, wounds a bull elk with his bow, they leave the elk for a few hours then go back at dark, they see the elk heading for a deep dark swamp so he gets out and shoots the bull in the headlights of the truck using a rifle.

Handloader and Rifle magazines from Petersen's. Unfortunately, now, there is far too much advertising. if you want to learn a lot about guns, find some American Rifleman mags from the 60's and early 70's, and you will learn more than anybody else you know. When I was growing-up, i would take one of my dad's old Shooting Times, Guns and Ammo Or National Rifleman with me into the washroom to read and came-out with a pretty broad knowledge without really ever taking time-out of my schedule! These old books from the gun-happy US of the Viet-Nam era have more educational info and less advertising than any other publications. It's kinda like the golden-age of guns. If you wanna look at pictures, and find-out the latest gadget you can blow money-on, buy new. If you want to learn the Nut and bolt How, Why and When of guns, get the classics.

"Newfoundland Sportsman" for some good down to earth hunting stories that are funny and not "how to" stories, all stories are just joe's like us writing to the mag. Good read!!
