Got a spring draw for 6-21 b and was planning on taking my jetboat down the stikine towards the mouth of the iskut river. Not sure what time the ice goes out on this river or what the bear population is like but wanting to explore some new ground anyway. Is there any good fishing in the spring and what kind of fish is available.Any info on the area would be great.....Thanks

Snow pack in Telegraph creek was 54% of normal as of the data posted March 1st.

You've got the right idea on where to hunt. No shortage of bears and some absolute monsters in the area. Shoot for late May & on to head in, you'll do good.

Just a thought here....I had a grizz draw up that way a few years back....I was also thinking of taking the jet boat..... Spring run-off in the stikine can be insane (as it was when I went there)
It was a torrential river of trees and debris, no way in hell would anyone have launched a boat when I was there.

In the few days I was there, the place to launch and park a truck was totally underwater! Rains were bad that year, but with the huge snowpack the spring melt could be = as bad?????

I was very glad I didnt drag a boat up there!

Is this a area that doesn't get hunted much or is people not wanting to give up info?

Area does not get hunted much, at least not for spring bear, so you probably wont find out a whole lot of info on this site.

Like I said though, you're headed in the right direction. Spend time glassing the slopes on the north side of the Iskut, you'll find bears.

There are lots of animals and few people up around Telegraph. Spring runoff on the Stikine can be "exciting".
Other than the low water in the spring after the ice goes, it is a "big" power river, faster than most rivers it's size with lots of cold water moving. For a non whitewater river (below the canyon) it can be quite dangerous if you have motor issues. Also, besides the long, expensive tow to get there, the area you are talking about is more isolated than most in BC. There are no "small" problems on the river when you are that far into the middle of no where. These may all be things you already know, of course. I grew up in Telegraph and every couple of years there was a death or two on the river, often with no bodies recovered. I don't say this to keep you out, it's just that most folk's problems on the Stikine, that I remember, stemmed from lack of respect for the river. I think it would be a great trip, especially in the fall for 2 or3 weeks.

Sounds like you'll have enough boat. My cousin takes his 19'er with a 90 hp outboard jet down from Telegraph and up the Chutine river for spring bear. Big old boars wandering through those coastal mountains.

Looking forward to hearing about your trip.

It sounds like you have things under control. I wish I was going too and look forward to the pictures.

That whole country is crawling with griz....I recced the complete route for the Galore road ( both routes ) in June-July of that year and we saw 14 griz in one 10 day shift on the ground. 235km of nightmarish ground though.....

Call the Stikine Riversong Cafe in Telegraph. It should be a listed number. They are right on the river, so should be able to let you know about the ice etc.

Sorry about that. The father passed away last year, but I thought the Riversong operation was still year round. Hopefully they open up for the summer. There is a small (2 member) RCMP det. in Telegraph and if it hasn't moved is 50 yards from the river. Maybe give them a try.
