Seeing one of my old threads being brought back has made me want to post my pics of last years elk hunt. The smaller bull of the two was very hard to determine if it was a legal 6.But after closely examining it through a spotter and binos we could see it had some junk.I had shot this bull on the second day and tacked it for 4 hrs through rim rock and snow. The snow made it easy for the blood trail but eventually petered out across a slide that was impassable. On the second to last day of a 14 day hunt we had connected on a 318" gross bull.On the way home i looked up on the mountain and saw a cow feeding out.We pulled out the spotter and to our amazement my bull was still alive. His unique non typical horns could not be mistaken. The next day we made the trek up the mountain.Knowing he was in the area I didn't call at all.We just wanted to locate him as he was probably bedded somewhere, hurting from the shot I had hit him with 8 days prior! We finally found the bull and stalk to 230 on our bellies from 650 yards where we spotted him from.We got set up and i bugled once to get him out of bed. Then put him right back to bed.As I approached the bull I found out he was an 8x7 weird compact horned bull.It is amazing how he sucked up that shot 8 days earlier as i had hit him in the chunky part of his briskets with my 338 win mag.It was totally festering and infected. What a perfect ending to a trip that we always work so hard on!

Congrats on an awesome trip! Congrats on 2 fine elk. Pics?

Glad you were able to recover your bull. Curious to ask how far a shot and what manufacture bullet was it that you used. You would have thought that hitting him in the brisket it would have at least traveled far enough into the heart lung area, Especially with a 338 mag. Animals are pretty tough though, I smoked a whitey that went over 400yds with half a heart and an 8" wide blood trail.

Pretty cool boys... nice stickers on those racks. Looks like a hot days work of hauling given the backgrounds in the pics. Thanks for sharing.

:) Well done guys. Tough critters, eh? Again, the three key to success in Elk hunting; Persist, Persist, and Persist !
