I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a nice mature cackler this fall while out hunting with Field Marshal. Craig Stolle of Artistic Wildlife Creations did his magic and it looks amazing!

Thanks again Craig!

Not an aleutian nor is it endangered. Aleutians have rebounded to something like an annual 14% rise every year from the 1970s-2000s. They were endangered for a while but were taken off the list

Its a fairly mature cackler, branta canadensis minima.

Not every small goose that has white ring around their neck is an aleutian

Looks great Marc. Curious if you had a photo from straight head on? Like to see the wings how're cupped? Thanks.

There is still a few flying around, we saw some lesser Canada's as well today in the mix. Thousands of Mallards as well figure they're holding out a bit before they continue with their migration.

Have to re-paint my office soon so I can hang up my mounts to show them off instead of having them in the spare bedroom.

I agree with fowlweather; that white ring around the neck defines it. Beautiful bird and taxidermy!

You see many on the eastern coast?

Guys it's a cackler not an Aleutian.

Here is a picture of it on the ground, third bird up from the bottom left next to the mallards.

Cackling Canada Goose
B. c. minima Small, dark goose with almost duck-like proportions (about the size of a mallard - about 3 pounds). It is darker than other small geese. Has a short, stubby bill and "puffy" head. The neck seems to merge with the breast. It often has a white neck ring, but the ring rarely extends around the back of the neck as it does in the Aleutian Canada Goose.

I don't think I ever got around to checking that on this guy as he went into the freezer pretty quick.

Tell your brother that the nylon didn't hurt it either.

Yea, I've done one or two in nylons but stopped after a couple guys said not too. I guess it's each guys choice. But my ended up fine aswell.

I gotta say though the more I look at this bird the more I'm curious.

Coloring is darker and works for both subspecies but the colouring on the photo is leaning to an aleutian, it has the darker negative ring underneath the white ring which is more aleutian

A fairly big thing is the check patches, a major trait of aleutians is separated cheek patches underneath, not 100% of them all but a vast majority. It has no separation at all

The head doesn't seem flat ontop and puffy near the bill so cackler

Weight, looks like a cackler compared to the mallards, aleutians are normally in the 3-4.5 lb range, this sitting next to the mallards I don't think weighs over 3.

Culmen could be a good thing to know, 32-38mm aleutian, 26-32 cackler.

Like all subspecies there is a lot of overlapping traits based on their breeding areas and evolving all together close by

Have to agree with CF on this one, size and breast color tells me it's a Cackler. I shot one a few years ago that only had half the neck ring and wasn't much bigger than a Mallard. Should have mounted it cuz it sure was crappy to eat! K

it must be a cackler then, but a good fight :(

all the ones i have shot have never had those, my dad has an aleutian mounted in his office that he shot, it is an aleutian for sure though, he had a CO come look at it because he had never shot a cackler ever before, he didnt know what it was, the CO confirmed it as an aleutian

Most co's i know cant tell the difference between a hen mallard and black duck, let alone an aleutian and cackler! lol.

Nice mount and bird Marc!

That is a cackler 100%. Short culmen makes it quite obvious.

The neck ring is very common on adult cacklers.

You can see how many have some variation of it in this picture..
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f179/RedCollarDusky/P1060454.jpg

Here are a couple cacklers that have a very pronounced neck ring....alongside some that don't. We see these everyday of the season...
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f179/RedCollarDusky/P1060469.jpg

Other subspecies also have a defined neck ring. This is an adult Taverner's goose...NOT an Aleutian.

Hope this helps! Great mounted bird by the way!!!

Just by chance I'm pretty sure we've meet at the Oregon waterfowl festival. Small world, recognize the name from ifish and the refuge too.

I've actually been a member for a year now, but don't post much :)

Live in Oregon, and just wanted to shed some light on the aleutian/cackler debate. Thanks for having me.
