Years ago i went hunting with a group of 4 for a week, and back at camp we did not have an outhouse, so we just went at random in the woods. well after a week it looked like we were walking threw a mine field. I am just getting back into hunting and being a plumber decided that i would build a portable outhouse so this would not happen again. I am planning on buiding one for each trip and leaving it behide for each trip because human waste is not good for the enviroment. It was simply get some wasted plywood build a box and but a seat on it. Being a plumber i talk sh _ t all day so i was just woudering if anyone else thinks this way. Oh by the way my wife likes to hunt to and i thought when she goes with us she would like it too.

well you could have buried it. what we do is we make a deep hole about 1 foot by 1 foot wide, like and as deep as you need and we cut a rectangular hole in a cheap portable chair and put it over top. when we were done we just took the chair (still completely clean) and filled the hole
you poo through the rectangle cut in the chair and down the hole it goes easy...

cut a rectangular hole in the seat and presto

We usually just cut a hole in a piece of plywood and screw a toilet seat onto it. A tarp wrapping the shitter affords a little privacy. I know some guys bitch about it, but we usually leave them up as well for the next person/group who comes through and needs to use it. I know I've been pretty thankful a time or few to come across a homemade outhouse in the woods. LR

Oh you damned city boyz.....
I never bury mine.
I spend all day in the bush every day I work. As if I am going to carry around a shovel all day long while hiking through the woods just to bury my crap...... that is just dumb.
I can understand near camp where others often tread, but in the middle of the woods??? Yeah right. I am an animal who shitz just like the bears, moose, and deer. Should we be burying theirs when we come across it too???
It's hard enough just remembering to keep a constant supply of $hit-tickets in my cruise vest. :)
I will never bury my shizit, and I've never picked up my dogs crap with a thin plastic bag over my hand either.

Not actually you Trapper. There were many things in this post that I did not agree with right from the original poster stating that "human waste is not good for the environment" to Gamehunter60 indirectly calling me an "ignorant shit." That is for me to do!!!
In that tiny halo around your camp as well as throughout provincial campsites, national parks and popular hiking trails there is a high frequency of human use. I completely agree with the guys building shitters or burying their crap, but in the other 90% of the forest that virtually never sees a man I find no reason to bury it.
That is unless you or your friend has a poorly trained dog that is hungry or likes to roll.....

Yah, agreed on what you're saying. I think it's safe to ASSume the other guys were talking about around camp, given the context. Or, you could pack it out and mail it to your favourite politician.

Not exactly portable, it was built after the other one had been their 25 years and returned to nature. Two seats no waiting Anyone found it and used it? (shown with out roof)

Our camp builds a portable from 1/4 to 1/2" plywood. Build the back wall and 2 sides and staple/screw 2x2 along back outer edge where side walls attach and for roof. Screw on side walls. On side walls measure seat hieght and again screw on 2x2 for your seat base and riser. Cut hole in base. For roof we screw on a plastizised cardboard piece and same for door with 2x2 frame. Cut out 1/4 moon shape in door(optioanal). Door has 2 cheap hinges you screw to wall and attach a latch. everything stores flat in trailer under quads. When at destination just screw together and enjoy the trip. Dont forget to take cordless screw gun and screws. Voila. takes 10 min. and your in business.

Well we have built some decent open air outhouse's -- one of our better ones has a nice comfortable seat, handle rails and steps. Hole is deep, and could probably use a bag of lye this year.

Whatever you build, use some of that 1'' thick styrofoam for the seat. Instant warmth for your ass cheeks in any temperature. And pour some water in the bottom so you can hear that resounding 'sploosh' when the turds hit.

You'll feel right at home. :)

no splooshes in our camp. After garlick and hot peppers for appies everyday its smooth sailing. Only week to clear out the system. LOL

Nope... haven't been there... they may look like bullet holes but its just old old plywood... and wood we have had from various years --- bullets would be scary... we leave a big skull with antlers in place of the cushion seat when we leave camp.

Ya I agree .Takes 15 min to half an hour to pre-fab a ply or OSB crapper and makes life sooo much better around camp.No more stepping on landmines at 1:30 am and then packin it back into the wall tent!Out in the wilderness though;I aint packin no shovel ! If I'm really feeling those tree-huggery- naturey feelings I'll throw a rock on top of it,or a branch to cover it up.

Al, our retired contrating hunting partner, built this portable outhouse for our hunt last year. It breaks down for easy storage and transport and doesn't take very long to set up. It has an outdoor light and a heater inside, both of which run off the generator and/or camper battery. It's not a backpack model, but GREAT for camp.

For camp I just use toilet seat screwed onto plywood, big rubbermaid with oval hole cut in bottom, place over a dug hole upsidedown, apply seat. After use, add shovel full of dirt.

Edit to add some advice- bury you crap, it's one of the reasons why the German's lost the North Africa campaign.

When away from our camp area I just use a horizontal log for a crapper. Just be sure to not sit too far back on the log or, well, you'll figure it out.

Around camp I'll dig a hole and put a 5 gal plastic oil can with the bottom cut out of it over top of the hole. I then just bring out the seat (that has a place of honour by the stove pipe) and rest it on the pail. It works great. After a few uses I'll fill in the hole and dig another one near by. This keeps the forest smelling pine fresh and gives me a nice dry/warm spot to park my a$$.

I've seen a variation of this using a kitchen garbage bag draped in the Uncut pail but I'd rather bury it then wrap it up to transport out.

Well when away from camp I look for a triangle set of trees.... two hip wide and one in the back... ready made sitting place that allows for comfort and not falling of the back of a log.....

All too funny! A relative with me went for a "walk", I heard a hollar, so came rushing over only to see 2 legs wrapped in trousers, sticking straight up, I couldn't stop laughing for hours, even now! (can't say who it was)

I've been using a Luggable Loo for years = 5 gal bucket with a small toilet seat/lid on it.

http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0761502P/no-reliance-luggable-loo-toilet-reviews/reviews.htm

Line it with up to 10 white kitchen catcher garbage bags at a time just pull out the bag when you feel it needs to be emptied, tie it up and put it into a large garbage bag when you break camp take it with you and dump all your garbage off at a landfill or transfer station on your way home.

If you are in camp for a week I think you would want to have one spot that you can bury when you leave, that way you don't end up with said mine field. Unless you like stepping in your own poop and dragging it into your tent with you.
