The caption from the photo

"In search of mates, freedom and food, coyotes are moving into Kelowna. Pictured, a coyote on Ziprick Road watches a woman enter her car Thurday morning."

How can a coyote move into town expecting "freedom" They are not in kennels or chained to trees in the "forest" are they....

Dumb captions......Is the coyote eyeing up the woman as a mate??? Or as food???

Sorry, I am a little pissy this afternoon:-?

Rocks, I hear ya
Some of the headlines and captions and comments in mainstream media really let the lack of intel show through
Not a problem for most of the uninformed sheeple reading it too

Its nothing new, but it seems anything to do with wildlife is a news item these days. Sign of the times I guess

About the yotes, I had two sitting at the end of my driveway at 4 a.m. today, serenading my two dogs across the fence.

Sensationalizm sells papers. some of these reporters have absoutely no idea what they are talking about and of course those that read it in the paper or hear it on the news think it is the gospel truth. We are into the tough time of year for most wildlife. The late winter months combined with breeding season has coyotes on the move. Why in the heck would they not move into the city? People continue to leave their pet food outside, cats are free range and there is garbage everywhere. On top of this there are people that are acutally feeding them. And one wonders why there is a problem.

Funny-we has some friends that don't really like hunting(ok...not really my friends:???:). She told me to shoot as many yotes as possible as they own a small dog and are constantly worried about losing it.:)

I live a block from there and I often hear them at night. Never that close but probably in Springfield park, about a Km from where that pic was taken.

Last knight on the discovery channel there was a show about the girl that was killed by a coyote in Nova Scotia. In northern Ontario they have Coywolves.

My grandfather got lost in the bush while out hunting....the coyotes ate his fingers and chewed his face....they don't live long when I am packin'....just be aware they are predators and will eat you if they can.

Thanks for the reminder... I'll get the .22 & subsonics handy soon. Every spring the yotes that try to eat my dog all summer seem to stop by my property to check in during daylight. The last few checked out in the same spot.

Every time I stop to shoot one, they are already running or start instantly. So I think the ones I run into are still scared of humans. I have only shot two out of the 20 to 30 I have seen, they are fast when they have been shot at before. I have seen lots in and around Edmonton.

They become accustomed to humans because some choose to feed them or they just adapt because there is easy pickin's for food sources. They are smart and know how to survive. There are urban fox around here as well

Any coyote that stood there like that at the end of MY driveway in broad daylight, would damn well end up a little more wary than it had been before...

A few years ago, I was mugged by a pack of coyotes while moose hunting in the Chilcotin. I had made a big loop along a lake, then up a nice ridge, and finally came to a wide open meadow about 1/2 mile across. Hadn't seen any sign of moose and I was pooped, so I was just making tracks across the meadow heading for the truck. Got just about to the other side and caught a motion out of the corner of my eye - a coyote walking up beside me about 30 feet away. Turned out to be a family of 5 of them. Being intrigued, I stopped and got out my camera and snapped a few pictures as they would disappear into the willow fringe and and pop back out again in unpredictable locations. I noticed that they were working their way gradually closer and I finally figured enough was enough. So I shot Dad and that was the end of the harassment.

Obviously these weren't habituated to humans nor had they found a steady source of food they could associate with civilization. I believe they were testing the waters to see what they could get away with and had a snack on their minds, but I bet they didn't give any people grief after that.

Last knight on the discovery channel there was a show about the girl that was killed by a coyote in Nova Scotia. In northern Ontario they have Coywolves.

Eastern Coyotes are a different breed than the ones out west. Somewhere back in time they mated with a Wolf and their offspring are what we are seeing today. Much larger coyote and more aggressive.
