A few years back, my best friend signed up for Big Brothers. You are allowed to select any "little brother" you want. He asked for the kid that no one wanted. He said, "Give me the kid who has been on the waiting list the longest."

This kid is like the little brother I have always wanted. His idea of a dream week is camping, hunting, fishing, 4x4ing, hiking, and learning anything about the bush. He is 15 now and passionate about becoming an outdoorsman. He's been going through some hard times latley, and has had a tough life living with his single mom. However, he's SOoooo excited about this trip.

I commited to camping with my best friend Ry, and his "Little Brother" years ago. He is available to go this weekend coming. While in the program you are not allowed to have overnight trips away, but they just graduated the program a couple months back and have permission from mom to go on a weekend trip away.

I really want to make this kids weekend. I will bring up the toy hauler and all the fun stuff. We will hopefully be learning in a safe environment, to shoot, hunt varmints, fish (if possible), quad, 4x4, light campfires, and everything that goes along with it. This will be his first camping trip outside of handful of times in a provincial park.

What I need help with is finding the perfect place. I need a place within 2.5 hours of summerland/penticton where I can bring the 28 ft trailer into. Snow levels are my main concern. I do have chains, and dont have to go in too deep with the trailer, but I need to get off the beaten path. If anyone knows a good area right now with minimal snow where we can get into and explore that would be great! Any help, even current snow levels around the interior would be helpful.

Please contribute to making this the best weekend in one kids life. Ideas of stuff to do and places to go would be great!

Dave, good on you. Try the Kane valley. There's room enough for many large RV's Lots of yotes to look for and the fishing will be good if the shore isn't frozen in? Snow in all the years I've been in there has never been an issue, plus as you know for the most part the area is flat.

Tunkwa Lake is a great place for you. there is a provicail campground next to it. (no hookups i think) leighton lake wich is right beside tunkwa is better for ice fishing (ive heard) and you might have a chance to blast a few dogs if your lucky. they keep the road plowed so no worry about getting the trailer in. or if u wanna rent the rustic cabins, there cheap, and warm with wood burning stoves. and have cooking stoves aswell as fridges. i'm heading there for the weekend of the 25th for snow snowmobiling, ice fishing, and hunting as well. and kudos to you for doing what your doing!!!!! your a good man!

Right on! I haven't been to in years like 10 or so but Paska lake was a good place to camp, fish and quad for the kids. the road WAS decent and easy to navigate. Though I have never been there at this time of year. Was pretty high up and snow could be an issue maybe someone more familiar with this area could elaborate.

Good luck hope you and the little Bro have a great and memorable time.

Not sure you would make it to Kane area with that trailer this weekend. Drove back from Tunkwa and lots of snow up the coq thought not much near Merritt. Tunkwa would be good but the quads would have a tough time as there is almost 2ft of snow. Best bet might be to go south around Oliver/Osoyoos, maybe Sawmill area?

Might be a spot somewhere on the Kettle, but it's tough to say. That's a pretty serious trailer. Fishing can be hot this time of year.

hey Dave, there is Kentucky/Alleyne Prov park by Aspen Grove near the Coq Hwy... used to be they left the gates open in the off season. You could call them ... there about 10km in from Aspen Grove not sure about the condition of the road... there is lots of trails out the back and yotes and things to do .... and there are lots of lakes in the area. Where ever you end up --- have a great time!

Fraser Canyon North of Spuzzum and south of 70 mile is where you will find little snow, I know it is a haul for Ry but I would be thinking Lillooet, Bigbar Ferry road, some great snow free areas to get off the highway and play. klm 11 and klm 18 both have great camping areas.

Awesome to hear what you are doing! lots of snow anywhere in the north okanagan at any elevation. Something like Echo lake resort in the Craiton valley might help. Cheers & kudos to you.

Hey Big Bore, check out jolly lake near mount baldy, near oliver. Shouldnt have to much snow for the quad and there is a year round care taker who is very easy going (butch). Its off the beaten path and a nice spot.

I'll try and post up some pictures soon. A very generous member on here gave us the keys to his hunting lodge on a lake. The kid and all of us had a blast. It was minus 15 most of the trip!

The trip turned out great!

Thanks to a very generous person on here who loaned us his hunting lodge for the weekend! The kid really had fun and had a lot of firsts. Like hunting yotes for 6 hours, which didnt pan out, cutting wood with a chainsaw, building a fire on a frozen lake, 4x4ing in a bad ass lifted truck, and lots of other shananigans.

What a great weekend, couldnt have done it without HBC! Thanks again!

Looks like you got to show him alot of "Why we hunt" though.
That fire and lake thing i dont get though! My Newfie buddy told me that and i tought "Thats why Newfs have the reputation they do, they build fires on lakes!"

Again good on you BigBoar and whoever let you stay at their cabin!

Thanks for the pm Lorne, I'm very sorry to hear of his passing. Never met him, but judging by his threads and posts on here, I'm sure I'd have liked him. He seemed very passionate about hunting and being outdoors, certainly a loss to the community, and at only 37 years old, far, far too young, so sad......

When Dave posted this up I never hesitated for moment to let him use our family cabin, he was that good of a guy.

I was PM'ed with that sad news shortly after making that post. Terrible to hear, especially when he was clearly a fit, young guy, seemed very sudden and unexpected : (
