Here's a site with a nice collection of grizzlies from the Kootenay Lake area..
http://kootenay-lake.ca/mammals/carnivores/gbears/index.html

lots of other pretty cool wildlife photography, and an eclectic mix of natural history and local lore.

I have been told that 4-22 ,4-20 as for other regions in the EK are under review and that MOE might close some of these regions down or reduce the odds..

Leads me to believe the mortality was from natural causes or poaching?
or not realistic?

I find it very hard to believe you weren't successfull in filling your tag in 4-22. I've hunted that area for 12 years now and have seen more and more grizz sign every year. More encounters with elk hunters every year also. While I was there for two weeks last season I know of 4 different encounters with hunters in the valley. Also know of a guy that called in 5 grizz in bow season over the sulphur area. In my opinoin the grizz population is doing just fine. (no need to drop the odds there.)

I have been informed that there where to many sows shot in these regions thats why they are under review and a chance they will not be open..

Actually its Not my Bear, but a good friends from 4-35. I was responsible for locating it after the shot, notice he is in some thick timber. He was hiding while he died watching his backtrail... Thank God I wasn't too quick locating him.. He was hard to find although he only went like 150yds. The Bear is still not completed mounting, as the guy, just got it tanned to mount at a later date.... It would be done if it was mine for sure!! Biggest Bear I've ever seen dead from these parts. Easily weighed 6-700lbs and i could hardly roll him over to skin him out....

possibly because it is a different season?
there is only a spring draw and I chose the last week of May to hunt.
only seen a sow and 2 cubs and hunted with a local that has previously guided in the region.
I find it hard to believe they say too many sows were shot?2 tags and the other hunter never even seen a Grizz.

Blainer:

You nailed it buddy.... Too many "other" mortalities. Self defence, CO kills, CP Rail, highway kills ect. The outfitters took a few as well but the incidentals were the clincher. Things could change but I doubt it.

Brenden

FWIW I watched one die legally in 4-22 last spring.

Whats that one carcass that young G bear is feeding on along the river ?
I envision shooting a Gbear on slopes like that one day, thats exactly how I picture it.

Which one? Those are both on slides, no carcass.

IIRC one was digging, likely hedysarum roots. Cow parsnip is a big one in the spring as well.

Mu 4-20 if anyone gets the draw I can help.

Kinda looked like a carcass on the river, my mistake, must have been the roots.

Good footage.

He's a super old boar. Got lots of footage of him.

For scale that's a moose carcass, head on.

He chased another boar away that was harvested later that week a couple kilometers away. It looked like a cub beside him and actually jumped in the water when he chased it. It was right around 7 1/2 iirc.

Deceiving.

Hey Blainer I hope you didn't take my post the wrong way. I wasn't referring to you and your hunting skills or not filling your tag. In general I would find it hard to believe anyone would not fill thier tag in this area for grizz seeing the amount of sign. Like you say it could be totally different there with the time of year. Being there during elk season I'm sure these bears have come accustom to elk hunters and the calling. Would be nice to have an LEH during during the elk season .

4-22 is loaded with grizzly bears.. i highy doubt anyone else hunts that country more then me and my friends. i probably spent at least 40 or 50 days in that country last fall and i will spend at least half that again this spring hunting black bears. i hunt one drainage in timmys area that holds the highest population of gbears i would say in the east koots
